    BM... Mayhem or Venom?

I've just been watching a BBC documentary about murders associated with Death and Black Metal, and have been informed by the middle-class, business-suited pratt who was given the job of narrating it, that the band Mayhem was the founding father of Black Metal...

As an old fogey of 36, I would beg to differ.
In my opinion, the term Black Metal was coined by Venom, and perfected by Mercyful Fate, under the Dictatorship of Danish genius King Diamond.

Am I right, or did I miss something big in the 1980s???? :starwars

Venom created the term, but didn't play BM, more some sort of "Horror-Metal". Mayhem probably were the first band that really played BM.

I beg to differ. Black Metal became something different over time, same with Death Metal.

Both Possessed and Onslaught were credited with the term "Death Metal" circa 1984 / 1985 but if you ask people today people will say Onslaught is Thrash/Speed Metal and half of the people will tell you Possessed is Thrash Metal and the other half will tell you they are Death metal. Hell back in the late '80s Slayer was considered Death Metal in large circles.

Venom created a feeling with their dark melodies, Mayhem probably played BM at it's fastest beat but I give the prize to Bathory and Celtic Frost due to the eerie melodies and low production.

To me, BM is about the lyrics and imagery, rather than the music, that I find virtually indistinguishable from Death Metal.
For instance, if someone didn't know the uniquely hideous subject matter/ imagery of the great Carcass, they could easily pass as a BM band on the radio.

Venom released the album "Black Metal", as Onslaught released the track "Death Metal" (on Power From Hell), which also muddies the waters.

As Psychologcl Mishap said, BM evolved into the Mayhem-type phenomenon, but I think it would be grossly unfair on King Diamond to hail Mayhem as "the Founders of Black Metal".

I have always hated 'labelling' any metal. This debate over what is 'black', 'death', 'thrash', 'heavy', 'goth', 'doom' ...it is all metal to me.

What would the 1st Black Sabbath album (1970) be classified as?..Plenty of 'Satan' mentions in the title track... ..ha ha... Doom?...

As with Venom, also 'Satanic' lyrics...but really just noisy style loosely played 'metal'. Like Punk is to old Rock n Roll. Bands such as Mayhem & Bathory adopted the Venom sound. What about early Celtic Frost?...HOW many bands have copied Tom G's style!!! Is that considered 'black metal' or death or thrash?.........Morbid Tales indeed....

Wearing face paint doesn't mean 'black metal' either.....just look at Kiss and Alice Cooper...

...or is it vocal style that makes 'black' and 'death'....

Who cares....I either like a band or I don't...regardless of what 'pigeon hole' they are supposed to fit in.

    What? :eek

Bathory were not only the first that termed the music like that, but actually the first that played it, or at least released a record on it. 1984 - Bathory set the era, still a lot influenced by Venom. But, I personally regard 1987 as the official birth of BM - when Bathory released "Under the Sign of the Black Mark", which was the first album worldwide that can be said to be *absolutely* BM, and in fact has influenced all "bigger" bands that came later in one way or another, most of which Darkthrone, Marduk and Immortal, who all developped a style based on this masterpiece rich in facettes.

Celtic Frost were pretty early too, but whether you can really call them Black Metal is a good question.,
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)
