    Whatever Became of Beauty ?

What is the virtue in harshness. ? Is the sound of musical instruments really enhanced by the introduction of extreme harmonic distortion ? Are lyrics improved by being snarled and growled ? Indignation and outrage have been expressed in folk music for centuries by making the words effective, not by shrieking them. Listen to traditional Scottish and Irish folk music in which scathing denunciation is expressed in poignant lyrics clearly enunciated so that the message can be understood immediately. Compare this to the screaming, snarling, and growling of lyrics which frequently would be just as effective as the traditional songs if one could disentangle the message from the vocal rasping and an instrumental sound which qualifies as musical only by courtesy. To communicate outrage, not only is it not necessary to make the sound as disagreeable as possible, it is self-defeating. If you have a message, learn from the great folk singers of the past how to put it over effectively.

Tastes differ in music style - even if the messages are the same.
