Mobile Phones: Should children have them?

Personally I think it is madness for a child under 15 to have a mobile phone.
It seems to dominate the children of today, being the top priority of presents/things they want.

Why??....Perhaps my personal dislike of mobiles persuades my prejudice, but seriously, children do not need this money sucking device. Who do they need to contact so urgently?:haha

What has happened to 'innocent' youth...when riding your bike and other outdoor activities with your friends was considered immense fun.

    Personally.......no.

I first got a mobile phone when I was 15, basically because everyone had one and I could chat to my mates, plus it was an uber cool thing to have.

I sold it 7 months later as the trend wore of.

My little sister has been on about getting a mobile phone and shes 10, I don't think she will get one though.

The fact of kids getting cellular phones, is in my mind, pointless. Sure it is a nice thing to have in case of emergencies, but other than that it is just crap. Like SKADI said, who do they need to talk to so urgently? I wanted one for about a week, a Sidekick 2 or whatever you call it. But then I started to realized what a waste it was.

They've built new housing estates on the fields, woodlands and playgrounds. Run a new link road along the old bridle way and trashed public transport.
Result: Nowhere to play, or ride a bike. Outdoors has become a hostile environment for kids. Immense traffic on the roads and weirdos in the shadows. They live on mobile phones and computers, never get dirty (that's uncool anyway), never see the sun (apart from a package holiday), eat processed food and swallow our McDonald's-MTV Multi-Culture.
They are now 'brand-consumers' - a statistic in marketing strategies of global corporations.

    I pity them.

There isn't much outdoors left and that is littered with refuse. Personal freedom to do watever the *** one wants to (except for anything that is not PC) even for children has suprerceded any sense of dicipline. "Rules are bad!" Never mind that society is falling apart from the lack of them - real rules not these jokes most laws are. We've even lost the common decency to use please/thank you/excuse me in this city.
Urge! This is a subject that really gets to me! Isn't it all so obvious! :dismay
What greets me as I wait for the bus: vile screaming 12 year olds, they scream sexual profanities at eachother in front of my face (and I mean really shocking stuff -and I'm no prude), they cavort like monkeys (except monkeys are cute and have more sense of personal space) -bumping into whoever with no regard, and litter everywhere. Why does this happen? Because adults are not acting much better. Because if you dare to say anything you are some evil racist (unfortunatly the white kids are going down the same road too). Because people are so wrapped up in doing whatever they want to with no regard for anything but their own whim that they overlook the fact that children need to be told no sometimes, to be give rules and boundries -and someone to look up to besides 50 cent and J Low. Because we are so busy protecting them from the wrong things -"but tests are stressful" " losing lowers their self worth" "he could get a bruise"- that they have no sense of reality (well, most adults have lost that too). They grow up thinking that they automatically have some sort of right to whatever they want no matter what they do and how they act, as if someone just hands out cellphones and pays the bills the rest of your life. (Oh wait, I forgot they do that for some people eyes: )So no, I don't think kids under 15 should have cell phones, maybe even later than that and if they do they should definatly be contributing significantly to the bills. Personally my cell phone cuts down on my stress level alot; directions when trying to find places/people, not having to wait for important calls when I need to do other things. But then I don't use my phone alot and I keep my voice low and get off the phone as soon as I can wherever other people are being subjected to my one sided conversation!
    Sigh...
