    Exclamation 1996 McDonalds Hamburger

I teach a workshop titled Healthy Choices for Children. It's a class for parents seeking solutions to how to improve the way they eat. It's about the alternative food market, organics, and the top ten food additives to avoid and why, menu planning and more. It's a 3 session fabulously informative interactive class.

Below is my absolutely favorite prop. People are always astounded when I share this. I have used this as show and tell for a very long time.

This is a hamburger from McDonalds that I purchased in 1996. That was 12 years ago. Note that it looks exactly like it did the very day I bought it.
The flecks on the burger are crumbs from the bun.

The burger is starting to crumble a bit. It has the oddest smell. The paper and bag in the backround is circa 2008 - to add decor to the photo. My friend Robyn's idea.

This is the retro welch's grape juice plastic container I have always kept it in. People always ask me - what did you do to preserve it ?

    Nothing - it preserved itself.
Ladies, Gentleman, and children alike - this is a chemical food. There is absolutely no nutrition here. Not one ounce of food value. Or at least value for why we are eating in the first place.

The burger on the right, off the paper is a 2008 burger. I had to buy it to get the groovy paper and bag. The meat is a tad darker, the bun a little less golden but in 12 years it will look exactly like that too. Do you find this horrifying? McDonalds fills an empty space in your belly. It does nothing to nourish the cell, it is not a nutritious food. It is not a treat.

I marvel at how McDonalds has infiltrated our entire world. A hamburger here tastes exactly the same in China or some around the world place.
It's cloned. Makes you wonder doesn't it? Do me a favor and share this.

Nobody should eat stuff like this. It´s real junk.

I'm always complaining about all the fast food restaurants there are but no good restaurants to dine at.

There are a couple in my town of little home cooking shops but I'd like to see more of them and better quality of them around every corner instead of Burger King.

Putting McDonald's on every corner causes temptation and leaves you feeling slow and sluggish. They offer salads, but yea right

I'd love for America to exclude all fast food and put something real and healthier in its place.

I do want to keep the Pizza shops though.

Disgusting! I stopped eating at fast food chains like McDonalds even before I went vegetarian - around 11 years ago when I was 13-14.

I will probably shock everyone when I write this.....being that I live in America..... but there is no McDonalds in my town. The closest one is over 40 miles away.

I don't like McDonalds food. Instead of hamburgers, I like to make myself a schnitzel bun. The schnitzel goes in the bun with some fries, ketchup and mayo, sometimes with some vegetables. I love the taste of cooked meals.

Mcdonalds always leaves me disappointed and I haven't eaten there in years. The burger looks like something a hobo would pick up from a dumpster, it's dry and hardly any sauce or dressing or vegetables on it. It's basically crap. Freshly made burgers from small hot-dog stands are alot better, if I'm going to eat a burger, I prefer for it to be from a non-burger place. Hamburger restaurants simply cannot make decent hamburgers.

Actually, McDonalds are in no way, shape or form the inventors of the "Hamburger". It is nothing uncommon, and will never have been to put a loaf of mince (Frikadelle, or as we say in the south, Floaschloaberl) into a bun-shaped bread (Brötchen, or as we say in the south, Semmel or Weck').

The reasons why it is probably called a Hamburger is because such a matter would have been a snack in Hamburg, albeit the traditional Hamburg burger is made from fish (Fischfrikadelle im Brötchen). Chances are that it made its way around the world by German immigrants to America, who named it "Hamburger" because of its supposed origin (though it likely existed everywhere - like you could tell me that Spätzle couldn't have been invented by any housewife a few hundred years ago...)

As such, a burger (with bun or without) is a meal no less Germanic than a Schnitzel, and if home-made from mince and onions, is a speciality that seeks its rival. I've virtually grown up on Floaschloaberln mit Kartoffelpüree (burger and a type of mashed potato), and my eyes still go wide if it's served. It's also delicious if served with Semmelknödel (bread dumplings).

I know hamburgers aren't invented by McDonalds. But I don't like this kind of meat in Frikadelle.
So I put schnitzel or other meats in my buns.

    McDonald's hamburgers and pizza

HAH ! If you think today's McDonald's hamburgers are dry and tasteless [and they are] you should have tried a McDonald's 'burger from 1956 when they first appeared. I called them "Masonite (particle-board) hockey pucks."

They were about 7.5 cm. in diameter and 8 mm. thick and so dry that even ketchup wouldn't moisten them. Even for only 19 cents (15 in California), they were no bargain. The White Tower restaurants sold juicy, flavourful hamburgers, but they cost nearly 50 cents [horrors !] .
