Is Smoking 1-2 Cigarettes a Day Any Worse Than Drinking?

The anti-smoking crowd are quick to condemn anyone who dares to smoke, and parallels them with paedophiles, yet drinkers get a relatively easy time in comparison. In your opinion, is smoking 1-2 cigarettes a day as a form of "social" smoking, as it were, really any worse for your health than getting pissed on a Friday/Saturday night, or maybe drinking 1 pint a night, etc?

    Thanks

I believe I would be part of what yoou refer to oas the 'anti-smoking crowd', though I must say I don't think smokers are quite as bad as pedophiles

I think the main thing for me is that I don't get anything out of smoking. Some smokers say that it relaxes them or that it is social for them but the majority I know think it is a disgusting, unhealthy habit that they want to stop. Health wise, I think a few cigarettes a day would be worse for you than a pint a day, as I don't believe there is anything that unhealthy about drinking until you take it to the stage of binge drinking (which I'll come to soon). Another factor to consider is how addicted you are. While a pint a day is unlikely to make you an alcoholic, a few social smokes a day could easily evolve into a much worse smoking habit.

Getting smashed every weekend is a different matter, as like smoking, binge drinking can have a hugely negative effect on the body. That's not to say I don't do it, but unlike smoking, I do take pleasure from the effects of alcohol . Healthwise, both are goiong to effect you in different ways. Binge drinking will lead to a loss of brain cells and memory, smoking will damage your lungs. Neither are productive for keeping fit.

Perhaps it's a matter of choosing your poison and how much your willing to give up for it?

Smoking is bad for your health whether it be one a day or twenty a day.

Drinking, on the other hand, is just as bad for your health if you subject your body to heavy binge drinking on the weekends. Whereas, if you were to moderate your alcohol intake through the week, (say one pint a day, perhaps two), you will not be damaging your system even near to comparable levels.

I have a friend who has had his pancreas play up on three occasions now, and it was through him drinking heavily and consistently throughout the weekends.

    He is 22!

But as an ex-smoker answering your question, I would agree with the anti-smoking stance.

I go to the pub and drink. It does not bother your health.
You go to a pub and pollute the air around you and me whilst you drink.

You are damaging both our healths.

Here in New Zealand it is illegal to smoke inside at pubs or restaurants but second hand smoke is a good point to consider. While I may not always be the best company when I drink, I don't believe I am hazardous to anyone elses health

I'm a firm believer in moderation. I enjoy a glass of cognac with a cigar or a scotch and a bowl of pipe tobacco several times a week. There hasn't been much research at all geared towards casual smokers, which is what most pipe/cigar smokers are, so I'm not particularly worried.

if you smoke 2 a day you wont be able to keep that up for long because your body will keep needing more and more nicotine, if you only crave 2 a day then there is very little reason for you not to stop.

But then there are the people who say they enjoy a cigarette which baffles me, they dont enjoy a cigarette they enjoy the addictive release it lets off no different to how a Heroin addict feels when they shoot up.

I'll admit to not even having read a single report on the effects of smoking cigarettes compared to pipe or cigars, but surely the lack of heavy chemicals in cigars/pipe tobacco compared to packeted cigarettes would suggest a relatively healthier option?

Albeit one which will have the same fatal conclusion.

Hmm! I don't know. My Gran was a one-ciggie-a day smoker and she did genuinely enjoy the smoke rather than the craving.

I gave up smoking for two reasons, personally.

    # The birth of my daughter instigated the warnings that the doctor had drummed heavily into my head.

"Carry on smoking, John, and you will die just like your Grandfather. With no lungs and in absolute agony"

I wanted to be around for my little angel.

    # I found I was smoking through the need of my addiction rather than through an enjoyment.

That's combined with the much lower level of consumption for most pipe/cigar smokers and the fact that cigar smokers don't inhale makes it a much healthier (and classier) option. It's been my experience with most of my friends who enjoy pipes/cigars that we generally don't end up smoking a box a day like Winston Churchhill.
