    Black Haired, Dark Eyed Germans

We have almost five German student as exchange students, but all of them have black hair and dark pupils ? Is this phenotype common ? I'm very sure they're native Germans.

I've only seen this among *some* of the Pennsylvania Dutch around here. They have a very distinctive look about them. Ask them if they are from the Rheinland region or Baden. (shrug)

Yes and no. I would have to see an example of the look you are describing. I am trying to find a good picture of the PA Dutch look that I know of that is actually kinda foreign looking...but I am having limited success, probably because the Amish and Mennonites don't like to have their pictures taken. If these kids you are talking about look like some of the PA Dutch I've met then yes it's definitely untypical of Germans as a whole.

I will tell you something funny. People who are German or who have been around a lot of Germans will say I look German or ask me if I'm German. People who are not very familiar with Germans will say "you don't look German at all" because I don't have blonde hair and blue eyes. I guess maybe some Germanic people who don't live in Germany maybe also have this conception but not as much because they usually have family members of darker complexion.

Yes Germans have consisted of various ethnic groups for many generations. The Alpinoid Celts actually originated around the area of Austria. Also not a lot, but some good degree of Roman blood is mixed into all nations of the former Roman empire (which would be western Europe including Germany). Poland actually has more blondes than Germany for instance. Though it depends on the region. Along the coast in the North you see more Nordics.

All modern Europeans even the pure Aryan ones are typically mixtures of Nordic and Alpine at least if not Baltic as well. These Germans are probably taking after their Alpine features which actually get their name from the alps which can be found in Southern Austria.

I actually have a lot of German and Dutch ancestory though also mixed a lot with Irish and English, some French etc. And most of my family especially on the more German side typically have blondish hair and blue eyes. But it seems like here and there one pops out with darker hair and features which I have. It shows that the Alpine mixture which is common in most Germans. Maybe it comes from Irish or something as well though, but I have seen pure Germans with the same features basically.

Take a look at Rammstein they have pretty common Alpine features with some Nordic mixture. Common for Germany

And though rare a few Germans have even darker features coming from Batlic bloodlines (France, Italy etc.).

Alpinoid eh? Not even alpinid? I wonder why the most striking nordid type is known as 'Halstatt' though?

I can't vouch for Hanna here but the type of look I have seen in some Germans (PA Dutch) is much more foreign than the look of the lead singer of Rammstein.

Soten, I believe I know what you mean. One chap I met while in Germany had jet-black hair and the darkest eyes I have ever seen. While in NZ the Maori people have very dark eyes they seem quite an orange-brown colour. However, this guy just reminded me of a raven, so dark were his eyes and hair.

I am not very well versed in all things to do with physical anthropology, but this bloke did not stand out from fellow Germans aside from his hair and eyes. His skin pigmentation was perhaps slightly darker than the average German, though still well within 'normal' standards in my opinion. His presence always freaked me out a little, I just could not trust his eyes.

I've only been to Germany once and while I was there I never saw someone who looks quite like some of these odd PA Dutch fellows. I was in Saxony however. I would like to go to the Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Baden area to see if there isn't some people there that resemble the PA Dutch around here.

I must add that these people (the ones that are very dark complected) look very very similar to each other. As soon as I see one I know right away that they are PA Germans. I almost wonder if it isn't some select genes that are being expressed in all of them due to a lot of the interbreeding and I suppose one could say incest of close families that occurs among the Amish and Mennonites. It is usually Mennonites or kids I have known whose parents had been Mennonites that look like this.

The individual I mentioned before was from Rheinland-Pfalz, a bit south of Koblenz.

I would be very interested if you could provide some pictures of these PA Dutch.
