How Do You Think Humans Will Become Extinct ?

Looking at species in prehistory, even the strongest and thoughest species become extinct sooner or later. Like Dinosaurs, mammoths, sabertooth cats.
Some survive for a long time, but some only for a short time. Especially in periods when environment was changing species become extinct.
Our enviornment is changing extremely fast which makes extinctions likely. Do you think we will survive the next 1000 years ?
If not, how could the last human die ?
Virus ? - Improbable, because always some individuals survive
Asteriod ? - Improbable, because large ones only occur every 60 million years
Alien ? - Improbable, because they had 5 billion years to come to earth and never did
Nuclear War ? - Maybe, but ususally always a few specimen are resistant
Will something new evolve out of us and kill us ?

I think the human race is the perfect creation on this Earth.

    # Virus: Nothing which can't be combated and eventually controlled by scientists

    # Aliens: Any life form that has transcended all primitive urges and instincts is not going to travel millions of light years to control and subjugate an alien life form.

Regardless of what Von Daniken says.

    # Nuclear War is a very strong possibility, but I hold on to the words of my teacher from near 18 years ago when he said that no country, no man is mad enough to eliminate man beyond all recognition.

There is a limit to mankind's destruction.

From what I have read, many Russian and Chinese Generals think that nuclear war is inevitable.

All the more reason to appease these people.

It may seem like a very weak and lackadaisical approach to a potential enemy, but it is also a good approach towards a potential foe.

Do you think humanity will become extinct ? If so, how ?

One possibility is that humanity will, in time, evolve into something so different that it can no longer be called human.

Another is that mankind will invent virtually indestructible android bodies which humans will take over at the moment of the death of the biological body and use as they have theretofore used the biological body, becoming, in effect, immortal.

This is not for all. Only a few would ever have minds and personalities which could tolerate and benefit from immortality. Those who are prone to boredom
would be inviting the torment of interminable boredome.

But can they be thought of as 'human' from therein?

There's a great website called Exit Mundi which is a collection of (almost) all of the 'end of the world' scenarios.

My bet is that it'll be the Supervolcano underneath the Yellowstone National Park. After all it is overdue for another eruption.

What about Hitler's "Doomsday Device"? If it existed, then there were plans to destroy the Earth, we just don't know if the plans would have worked.

But back on topic: I don't think the human race will die off for a long, long time. If there is enough nuclear radiation from a nuclear war in the future, human beings as we know them will eventually die off either from the radiation destroying all of our land crops or the radiation mutating us into something other than humans as we know ourselves today.

    @Beornwulfwer

Whether the immortal androids could be considered human is a VERY debatable point, and I'd wager that, if and when it comes to pass, there will be long-lasting and often bitter debate about that very issue.

I, myself, would answer that question with a definite "maybe".
