How Many of You Got Into Preservationism Through Burzum?

Either primarily, or around the same time that you became a preservationist, how many of you got into Preservationism, Heathenism or Nationalism by the influence of Varg Vikernes and his musical project Burzum?

I ask because it seems like an awful lot of Skadi members count Mr Vikernes as an influence, or indeed enjoy the music of Burzum. I often think that the man was single-handedly responsible for an ENORMOUS surge of interest in Germanic preservation, and that his influence is often underestimated. Would Skadi be as active if he'd never existed? Interesting to consider.

I quite like the music of Burzum, but have found it to be very repetitive and annoying.

I much preferred Immortal, Primordial, Emperor and other music types like Enya and Clannad.

My preservation and love of my heritage began from my early years when I got my first King Arthur book from my Welsh Uncle.

It was a journey from there. Music has just been a convenient accomplice as I grew up.

I loved Immortal. Saw them play at the Astoria in London. Man that drummer could go at some speed.

BeornWulfWer, I was at that show too I think. Or was it when they played the Underworld!? Hmm. I've no doubt many Skadi members like some Black Metal music, but I think Vikernes is the main figurehead for Preservationists.

Thrymheim - Burzum made very bleak, very atmospheric, very 'aryan' Black Metal music. Varg Vikernes himself (the only member of Burzum) was jailed for murder and became extremely well-known in the press for holding racist, traditionalist views. He is a Nordicist and during his time in jail has written many articles about Nationalism and Heathenism. Google him. I don't worship him by any means (actually I outright disagree with a lot of what he has said) but he is an interesting, influential character nonetheless.

I seem to recall that it was the LA2 that they played at and they were supporting Cradle of Filth, as I recall seeing Dani Filth at the side watching them.

I have tried to Google the tour date, but found nothing. I think it was about the year 97/98.

Speaking of the Underworld, I went to see Hypocrisy play there. I was right at the front because, as you know, the place ain't that big and Hypocrisy weren't as big either

After they had finished, we went to chill and have a few drinks to the side and we were joined by a few blokes. Me being the numpty I am at times I didn't realise we were chatting to the bassist of Hypocrisy.

I think the one I'm thinking of was Immortal, supported by (ironically) Hypocrisy at the LA2 on 10th April 2002.

I like Burzum and really enjoy Varg's writings, but I would say my existence as a metal head, a preservationist, and a Tolkien fan prior to Burzum prepared me to like Vikernes' works instead of the other way around.
