If anyone's interested, there's a great internet folk radio station that specializes in British folk: www.folkradio.co.uk/

Neo-folk right? I'm not very interested in hearing Crosby Stills and Nash.

It's not all neo-folk obviously, otherwise it'd be www.neofolkradio.co.uk or something , but there are some modern and neo folk acts hidden among the more traditional fare.

I've not heard of the term 'neo-folk' before, but it's sort of stating the obvious - folk music has always developed and changed organically. Some folkheads call this 'the process', what's important is that it remains under the control of the 'folk' that write and perform it.

Yes, I like neofolk and my favorite band is Forseti. I'm mostly familiar with the music of German and Austrian bands. Other bands I like are: Graumahd (Austria), Sturmpercht (Austria), Sonne Hagal (Germany), Werkraum (Germany), Falkenbach (Germany), Falkenstein (Germany), Waldteufel (Germany).

I'm not sure if all these bands are "pure" neofolk or if some don't fit in the folk metal category, I'm generally bad with classifying stuff into genres. Good folkish music anyway.

I love Von Thronstahl, they are very posh and artsy
I also like Sonne Hagal, Helium Vola and Of the Wand and the Moon.
Everyone has excellent taste, I don't think I can recommend much more bands.

    Triarii- Imperivm

I´m not a nazi, but the images are very fascinating. Is Triarii neofolk? Perhaps military neoclassical? I don´t know.

I'm going to throw this out there.

Essentially, "neo-folk" points out blatantly that we have all lost our culture in so many ways. It's romantic. It's a looking back. It's not present, it's not now. To me, it sounds like the death throes of European culture. It's the last days before a man dies and he turns over in his mind the best chapters in his life, over and over.

Don't get me wrong, I like the music. But it brings forth a lot of imagery and themes that are probably out-of-touch with how most people, and even the artists themselves most likely, actually live.

Maybe it's just the longing. The longing and yearning in the music is so strong for something that is not here that at the same time I love it I also get the feeling that it's somewhat pathetic.

The music is, whether conspicuosly or not, so very much attached to the idea that we are seeing the end of the greatness that once was that you leaves you feeling let down at best, hopeless at worst. It can definitely make you feel alright at first, but I can't help but feel let down when after listening to some neo-folk artist (Halgadom, Falkenbach, Sol Invictus, Omnia, etc.) I walk outside and see what is happening. And it's not just the kids listening to some cheap rap or that overweight guy with the "Big Gulp" slushie, it's me and you too.

Of course, I understand that it is meant to wake people up to this. Bring them to their senses. A restoration of culture and values maybe. But isn't it a bit too backward-looking and practically accepting of an inevitable defeat?
