'Tent Cities' of Homeless on the Rise Across the US

Homeless encampments dubbed "tent cities" are springing up across the US, partly in response to soaring numbers of home repossessions, the credit crunch and rising unemployment, according to a report

Nearly 61 per cent of local and state homeless organisations say they have witnessed an increase in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, the Washington DC-based National Coalition for the Homeless study says.

And the problem has intensified since the report was produced in April, along with rising repossessions, soaring energy and food prices and job losses, the group says.

"It's clear that poverty and homelessness have increased," Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition, said.

"The economy is in chaos, we're in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future."

Homeless groups and government agencies from Seattle, in Washington state, to Athens in Georgia, report the most visible increase in homeless encampments in a generation.

I don't think it's in response to the housing crisis, but we have more tent cities on this island that anywhere else I've ever seen. When I got to the island last year I was just shocked that there are stretches of beach that are, in effect, owned by these migrating herds of hobos.

I saw another article on this a day or 2 ago, and most of the people they interviewed were Hispanic.

We have them in England too. A big one in Oxford by the River Thames - that romantic city not usually associated with poverty. Most of the inhabitants were ethnic English before the police broke it up.

If they were "travellers" they would still be there claiming benefit and polluting freely

We have a similar development with homelessness in Sweden, and sporadic tent dwellings and even occupations of empty buildings.

The majority of our homeless are ethnic Swedes, probably since it is easier for foreigners to get help from relatives and social services.

An interesting remark made by a homeless man in the anthology Hemlösa is that it is much easier for them to sell the paper Situation Sthlm to ethnic Swedes than to the "foreign-born" (the paper is a project intended to help the homeless to get an income by selling a paper). Nowadays they also have to compete with professional beggars from eastern Europe, mostly Roma it seems.

    families living together...

I have lived at my residence for 10+ years and see that multiple families are living in nearby houses, especially those families with kids within the last 3 years. Not a bad idea to save money if you can get along with the families, but I'm sure it's a response to housing and economic conditions, as you see the parents most days just wandering around outside, this wasn't the case in one instance 4-10 years ago.

As for tent cities, the twin cities (minneapolis and St.Paul) do have a few "tent communities" that do get press from time to time.

Really? Whereabouts in the Twin Cities? I live north of the Minnesota River and haven't come across any tent cities yet.

Johnny Appleseed never covered all of america either.

Read an article in either the Star Tribune or Pioneer Press about it late last year. Do you cover every area in the Twin Cities? What job is that?
