    Music Taste 'Linked' to Personality

A study by a psychology professor has found links between personality and music taste.

The Heriot-Watt university professor Adrian North said: "We have always suspected a link between music taste and personality. This is the first time that we've been able to look at it in real detail. No-one has ever done this on this scale before.

"People do actually define themselves through music and relate to other people through it but we haven't known in detail how music is connected to identity."

According to the study heavy metal fans are gentle, indie music listeners lack self-esteem and lovers of pop music are uncreative.

He found that country and western fans are hard-working, rap fans outgoing and jazz and classical music supporters are innovative and bursting with self-confidence.

Contrary to the stereotype, heavy metal fans are gentle and at ease with themselves but they tend not to be hardworking.

Those who listen to heavy metal and classical music share character traits of being creative, at ease and introverted.

So what do you think? does this fit with your taste? It does with mine and now that I think about it with most people I know.

I will agree with this statement.

It is interesting to think about the changes in music tastes over the years in relation to personality. For example, most people I knew were finished listening to rap before the end of high school. That must mean they were starting to be less "outgoing". Surprisingly, some even listened to a little bit of classical.

Aren't the various media outlets funny!

In the Metro which can be snatched off of any public transport in England, it said the universities findings were different to what Yahoo has reported.

    In Yahoo it has stated:
    "rap fans outgoing"
When in the Metro it clearly stated:
    "Raps fans are laid back"
Perhaps Yahoo didn't fancy running the risk of people misinterpreting the word "laid back"

Same here, regarding most people I know.

It's not as easy for me to see where my own music taste would fit into this, which is mostly electro-goth and industrial. If I make the (very questionable) assumption that the closest those would get to the mentioned forms would be somewhere between heavy metal and classical... I'd say the introverted and creative traits are definitely there, but I'm not so sure about at ease. Anyone else with similar tastes have an opinion on this?

Sometimes I listen to some Rammstein which has some metal and classical. Some have even said it is industrial and somewhat goth.
I agree with the creative and introverted part also. Even though their music is aggressive, the listener could still be "at ease". I think of metal listeners as more intense, but the researchers could still be right. Perhaps they vent while listening, and then are more relaxed later on.

I'd say it was spot on with people who listen to Heavy Metal. As you say Berthold, I think the venting of anger and other emotions is gotten rid of during the listening of the music.

The article describes us as gentle also. That is a good summary. When I had long hair and dressed like a metaller, people were very shocked to suddenly have you offer help and assistance. From meeting lots of people at concerts and local gigs, regular pub haunts, I would say the scene is largely very articulate, respectful and kind towards each other.

I think that I would like to look at the actual study rather than the news clip.

From my personal experiences, most people I know do not generally fit within these categories.

Also, I would like to see how the researcher addresses problems with the research -- if he addresses them. For example, what does he say about individuals whose musical taste varies over time, when personality is generally thought to remain relatively stable.

I think it's a really obvious phenomenon but we cannot limit it to the actual sound of the music. The surrounding attitude of the subculture wrapped around the music genre plays an bigger role than the music itself. An obvious difference can be found between the personality of typical hiphop and metal fans, which is because of the different values the genres transport.

^And of course you then have the question of which causes which? the music the culture or the culture the music?

Indeed, an old idea, which is worth researching.

music for the soul." - Plato

Her is a good abstract: http://groups.uni-paderborn.de/musik...0paper%203.pdf

The professor has quite some interesting publications, and it is indeed not as simple as it is described in the little yahoo article:
    http://www.le.ac.uk/psychology/acn5/acn.html
"Nothing is more disgusting than the majority: because it consists of a few powerful predecessors, of rogues who adapt themselves, of weak who assimilate themselves, and the masses who imitate without knowing at all what they want." (Johann Wolfgang Goethe)
