Out There: People Who Live Without TV

For many Americans the thought of life without TV is akin to forgoing food, shelter or, God forbid, the Internet. But about 1 to 2 percent of Americans do abstain from the boob tube, and they might seem like strange bedfellows.

A recent study of those who live without found that about two-thirds fall into either the "crunchy granola set" or the "religious right, ultraconservative" camp, said researcher Marina Krcmar, a professor of communication at North Carolina's Wake Forest University. Krcmar interviewed 120 people from 62 different households who do not watch television, as well as 92 people from 35 households with TV, and described her findings in a new book, "Living Without the Screen" (Routledge, 2008).

Aversion to television, it turns out, is a common ground for the very liberal and the very conservative.

I am not in the religious right and am certainly not the crunchy granola type, but my old TV is gathering dust in a closet. Maybe it is because the internet is an acceptable substitute.

I don't have a working TV either I've never found there to be anything worth watching, I don't not have one because I'm a religious nut or granola bar muncher but simply because I have better things to do with my time! I do own a TV but I only use it for watching DVDs (as there's no terrestrial signal here) and I only own about 12 of them so you can see how often it gets used! Even the TV licensing people have given up and left me alone,

I agree with Lodfafner The internet is a more than acceptable substitute

I have a TV but it rarely gets used. I usually only turn it on if I want to watch a movie (which is becoming ever more rare) or when something important is happening (political debate or news event).

I do really enjoy watching the history channel though. And, just because I like things that piss me off, I'll sometimes turn on the LinkTV channel which is essentially a far-left, socialist, hippie, political activist station (http://www.linktv.org/). But again, this is rare.

We have a television, but the kids are the only ones in the house who watch it, and we limit what and how much they watch pretty heavilly. My wife and I enjoy watching movies, but the two shows that we watch we always download so we can watch them commercial free.

I didn't have a TV growing up, my parents actually belong to both groups mentioned in the article. I have one now, but mostly it's just background, it sits on the desk next to the TV and I usually have news, cartoons, or documentaries on which I watch during lull times of games or if something particuarly interesting comes on.

I replaced my TV with a 22'' TFT PC monitor, solely for watching movies.

I barely watched TV when still living with my father. And now living on my own, where should I place a thing that would only be gathering dust. Most of my livingroomwalls are coverd with bookclosests.

As the industry has gotten increasingly less entertaining, I'm considering moving into this category and just hoarding old DVDs. I either do this, browse the internet, or just read some books.
