America Suffers More Embarrassment At The Hands of Democracy

John Edwards, who made his marriage a central part of his overall message during the 2008 Democratic primaries -- was dealt a political blow Friday after admitting to having an extramarital affair.

In an interview on ABC News "Nightline," Edwards acknowledged the affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter, which began after she was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign, ABC said.

Opinions, however, are mixed on whether he would have a future in politics.

Should his career be over? Or is it just one of those things?

I know men will be men, or John will be John, but I fill it is very misleading for him to make his marriage and family values a focus for voting for him, then we find out he is just a liar. eyes:

I saw that he commented he felt " important now " and was " wrapped up in himself " as an excuse.

While a man's wife is suffering w/ cancer, how low and what scum. :

His career is all but over, now that this is released. I'm not surprised, however. This sort of behavior is normal for American politicians, though. Moreso for the Democratic party.

Edwards may be scum, but the media should really mind its own business. Things like these should be settled in private and not in front of the whole planet.

I agree the media takes things to far, and lord knows we will hear about it for far to long, but I do think America has a right to know. Especially when it is a man in his position, trying to acquire Presidency or any office position.

These men/women should think of these things before they involve themselves in such ridiculous scandals.

I agree. The only problem is that there may be a link between the cover-up effort and misuse of campaign funds. That will be the angle the media exploits as its excuse for slamming the airwaves with sensationalist drivel. I still think the media should bugger off about it. I really don't care about the affair, my reasons for disliking Edwards go much deeper than anything to do with that.

BTW, why is this embarrassment particularly "at the hands of Democracy"? It seems to me to be unrelated to any specific electoral/representative system. Just wondering.

I think Edwards political career is over, but I didn't think he had much of a future anyway. He only served one term in the Senate - & that NC seat is one of the few that actually switched parties every election, so it was probably prudent of him to retire after one term, rather then risk defeat in reelection. He was 1/2 of the losing Democratic ticket in 2004. He didn't do very well in the Democratic primaries this year, it was all Obama vs Hillary. I seriously doubt that Obama was going to make him the Dem's VP nominee, again. His only hope for further political advancement was through a political appointment to an Obama cabinet (God forbid) & the last person to make it to the White House via a cabinet position was Herbert Hoover.

Btw, I saw his interview on Nightline last Friday & I thought he came across as an egotistical creep. He actually made Bill Clinton look contrite in comparison.

Agreed! I never though that I'd be saying this (may God forgive me) but it's a pity that America can't follow the French in such matters... Mitterand & his mistress... Sarkozy & his adventuress/wife, Carla Bruni.

While it's pretty sleazy to cheat on your wife while she's battling cancer, McCain's cheating was just as bad, if not worse. Not only did he cheat on his wife, who had been crippled by a car accident, he left her for the beer heiress Cindy Hensley.

It is in public interest to know something about the personal lives of politicians, if someone treats those closest to them with dishonesty, they cannot be expected to act any better toward the public they were elected to serve. Marriage is as much a public oath as the oath of office is.

I am truly enjoying watching this shite happen to Edwards. He is such a smarmy, self-righteous A hole.

He made his millions putting doctors out of business. It is scavenger feeding lawyers like Edwards that are ruining the health care industry. But he wants to help the countries' poor by taking my money, forking socialist.
