I don't know how "Germanic" in ancestry he was, but one of my favorite sportsmen of all time is Tyrus "Ty" Cobb from Georgia. He played baseball mostly for the Detroit Tigers in the early 20th century. Another great from that era was Cobb's rival, and also an outright ethnic German, Honus Wagner.Click image for larger version.

What Lionel Messi is to the world is Remco Evenepoel to Flanders. He's the biggest cycling talent of all time.

The greatest cyclist ever was a Fleming too, Eddy Merckx, but Evenepoel is already considered better than him - just lacking Merckx' palmares. He's only 20 but an absolute beast devouring his opponents.

While I support Remco, I'm more of a football man myself and my favorite football players are all members of the club I root for: Ruud Vormer, Hans Vanaken, Brandon Mechele and Charles De Ketelaere.
