TN Locale Replaces Labor Day with Moslem Holiday

    http://www.wsmv.com/news/17063986/detail.html#-

Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be granted the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.

According to a news release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, a new five-year contract at the plant included the change to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant.

yson's director of media relations Gary Mickelson said the contract includes eight paid holidays -- the same number as the old contract.

Eid al-Fitr -- which falls on Oct. 1 this year -- marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

Union leaders said implementing the holiday was important for the nearly 700 Muslims, many of them Somalis, who work at the plant that employs a total of 1,200 people.

Nineteen-year plant veteran William Pentecost doesn’t agree with the decision.

    "I don’t think it's right. I really don't think it's right," he said.

Tyson company spokeswoman Libby Lawson said by phone that, "This isn't a religious accommodation, this is a contractual agreement. The majority asked for it."

"It shouldn't happen. I mean, I think, we're in America, you're in America, I think that they should go with our holidays," Pentecost said.

Channel 4's Cynthia Williams could not reach any of the plant’s Muslim workers, because Channel 4 News' crew was not permitted on the property.

Former employee and Shelbyville resident Anthony Proctor said he thinks what's happening is wrong.

He said he helped build a special Muslim prayer room that's located inside the plant and that no other Tyson facility has been that accommodating for any other religion.

"If we want to go pray, we don’t have one for Christians," he said.

Wow! I didn't expect to see a former home of mine mentioned here on the Althing! I spent most of my life in Tennessee and a couple years I spent living and working in Shelbyville. :p

I remember when I lived there the Tyson plant had a big problem and got into trouble for working illegals. When I was around it was full of Mexican employees.

I am kinda surprised by the Muslim thing? I never really saw Muslims in Shelbyville, but there were plenty of Mexicans. The bad part of that is Shelbyville is a good little town, about 20 minutes from Murfreesboro, which is about 30 miles from Nashville. There were lots of good country folks in Shelbyville, but the Mexicans invaded. We all know there is nothing they or we can really do when it hits home that way.

Not to many white folks work in the chicken plant, but some. I guess their reasoning is maybe to make their non white employers happy. Also, to keep them working because the employer knows not to many are going to work there except what I already mentioned and the employee knows they will keep working him/them because Tyson wants to make that money!

It is America and it should be recognized as an American holiday. To bad so many Americans are to dumb to know and realize what statement they are making when they do something so outrageous.

Just to clarify, this is a decision by the Tyson Foods, not a locale government authority. Companies like Tyson, specializing in meatpacking & other agrifood businesses, are responsible for much of the diversity that has plagued rural America in the last 15-years. However it might only be a matter of time before a Muslim holiday gets official recognition at some government level. Many levels of governemnt in the Southwest & California observe

, though I am aware of it being a paid holiday anywere, as yet.
