Patriotic poster, "Seid einig!" (c. 1870)

This is a poster encouraging German unity from the Franco-Prussian war period. It depicts Germania, the national personification of Germany.

"Heil, Germania!" (1872)

'Allegory of the Origin of German Unity' by Anton von Werner, Berlin, Akademie der Künst

Otto von Bismarck, Forging German Unity (c. 1880)

This mass-produced print is entitled The Blacksmith of German Unity [Der Schmied der deutschen Einheit]. It is based on an 1866 painting, since destroyed, by Guido Schmidt (1834-1922). It combines stock elements that appeared in countless allegories celebrating Bismarck’s role in German unification – the German chancellor, for example, is dressed up in a blacksmith’s apron, and the figure of Germania is clad in armor. Like so many other images of its kind, the print captures the moment when the newly-forged sword of unity is passed, like a torch, from the one to the other.

Bismarck-Apotheosis (1890)

Bismarck surrounded by allegorical figures: Viktoria, Germania and the muse Klio. In the background there are representatives of the German people: citizens and peasants, elderly and youngsters, a painter and a student belonging to a dueling society. By Ludwig Rudow.

German unity postcard: "1909 - German unity, my strength - my strength, Germany's power!"

German National People's Party Posters (German: Deutschnationale Volkspartei, DNVP)

The DNVP was a national-conservative party in Germany during the time of the Weimar Republic.

WWI German postcard: ''The Saviour of the East"

WWI Austrian propaganda poster with Austrian and German monarchs

WWI Austrian-German Card: Celebrating Alliances

Bleibt einig!

A depiction of a German soldier poised to throw a grenade. He stands protectively in front of an elderly woman. To the left, smoke rises from a burning house and forms the image of a man representing Britain. The man wears a wig made of coins inscribed with pound signs, and is attacked by an eagle. Another German man lies dead beside the house.

Anschluß Postcards (1918)

Deutschösterreich ist ein Bestandteil der deutschen Republik.
Artikel 2 der deutschösterreichischen Verfassung, einstimmig beslossen von der deutschösterreichischen Nationalversammlung am 12. November 1918.

(German-Austria is a part of the German Republic. Article 2 of the German-Austrian constitution, decided unanimously by the German-Austrian national assembly, November 12, 1918.)

People of Salzburg! Germany is Our Only Salvation/"Salzburger! Unsere Einzige Rettung ist Deutschland"

A stylised depiction of four men pulling down border posts. The posts are Austrian (red and white), Bavarian (blue and white), and German (red, black and white).

"Frontiers and fences should no longer separate us from our brother nation, we want once and for all to declare ourselves part of Germany! People of Salzburg! Germany is our only salvation. Therefore on 29 May unite in voting for union with the German Reich!"

Germany is our only salvation!/"Unsere einzige Rettung ist Deutschland!"

A depiction of a bull, representing the city of Salzburg, charging against a Bavarian blue and white border post, trying to knock it over. A red, white and black German border post, and a red and white Austrian border post already lie on the ground. In the background, a crowd of people stands, cheering on the bull, in front of the city's Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Tirolese! Arise!/"Tiroler! Auf!"

Working Committee for the Popular Plebiscite

"Tirolese! Arise! Be united and unanimous on 24 April in demanding our union with the German Reich! For the working committee for the popular plebiscite. The President: Dr. Stumpf. Wagner, Innsbruck."

Germans, Unite/"Deutsche Vereinigt Euch"

A depiction of an Austrian man throwing red and white Austrian border posts onto a fire. The posts are inscribed with the names of Austrian towns and regions, and with a depiction of the Austrian coat of arms. The flames and smoke rising from the fire form into a red, white and black roundel emblem, representing Germany.

People's Assembly for German Tyrol/"Volksversammlung für Deutsch Tirol"

A male figure standing on a rock or mountain peak, holding a Tyrolian flag.

"People's Assembly for German Tyrol. Singing Academy. Entry free. 5 May 8 p.m. Entry free. Pan-German study group."

Appeal Day on Behalf of our Fellow-Countrymen Expelled from Alsace-Lorraine/"Spendetag zu Gunsten unserer Vertriebenen Elsass-Lothringer" (1919)

A family of German refugees stand together, wearing simple clothes and comforting each other. In the background the silhouettes of Metz Cathedral on the right and Strasbourg Cathedral on the left are visible.

Schleswig Pro-German Cards (1920)

Pro-German propaganda urging residents to vote to maintain union with Germany in the Schleswig Plebiscite of March 14, 1920. Slogan reads:

"Seit 1000 Jahren sind wir Schleswiger. Wir wollen Schleswiger bleiben darum stimmen wir deutsch".

(For 1000 years we have been Schleswigers. We want to remain Schleswigers therefore we vote German). Publ. by Aug. Westphalen, Flensburg (Schleswig).

"I am German".

"We want to be German as our fathers were".

"Must Schleswig really be split up?"

"Must we Germans vote Danish now?"

The wronging of the Hultschin Land/"Das Unrecht am Hultschiner Ländchen" (1920)

Political propaganda protesting the Czechoslovakian annexation of Hultschin province in 1920, without plebiscite; and protesting the destruction of German culture in that region. Plebiscites were held in the vast Silesian provinces which contained a comingling of ethnic Germans, Czechs and Poles. However the southwest corner of Silesia, comprising Hultschin Land and part of the province of Troppau, were granted outright to Czechoslovakia by article 83 of the Treaty of Versailles.

Germany is the Mother Earth of us all/"Deutschland ist Unsere Gemeinsame Muttererde"

Depiction of a tree, with the coat of arms of Silesia decorating the trunk. The branches are decorated with the coats of arms of the Silesian cities of Breslau, Oppeln and Liegnitz.

Watch Out, Upper Silesians - Vote German/"Achtung Oberschlesier - Wählt Deutsch"

Depiction of an oversized Polish military 'Czapka' hat, placed over the chimneys of a factory. A skull emerges from behind the hat.

Germany/Austria: We love together, we hate together.

Christian people's party election propaganda focussing on the lost territories of Eupen-Malmedy.

"That's what the Polish emigrants look like... And that's also how you will look when Schlesien becomes Poland. Oberschlesier, stay with the new Germany!"

Pan-Germanic Pictures and Flags

Hans Adolf Bühler (1877–1951) painted 1936.

A picture about the people's want of the Anschluß.

Pan-Germanic flags.

This my favourite as this is so creative. That base is crimson and the cross with the thunders is so awesome. This is the Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the cross on him is a Templar Cross, not an Iron Cross.
