View Full Version : The Culture War Divide: American Exceptionalism

To those who deny America’s exceptional greatness the only other alternative is to believe in America’s exceptional evil.

With the stunning announcement of his pending retirement, Evan Bayh – only recently on the short list to be Barack Obama’s running mate in 2008 – the question of partisanship has once again become central to our national debate.

The conventional wisdom is that it is mere partisanship that is hampering the progress of necessary legislation in Washington (and in state capitols as well). This is a both wrong and dangerous conclusion, one that misses the real and important point: Americans are divided not just on policy but on their most basic beliefs about the most fundamental of issues, from the nature of man to the meaning of our existence, from the reality of God to the purpose of governance – and at its core, it is a question of one’s beliefs about the existence of the better.

Proof that our divisions run deeper than a mere “hooray for our side” partisanship is that the culture war is raging outside of the halls of governance, with people with no vested interest in the victory of an “R” or a “D” just as adamant and even militant as are the professionals.

In today’s culture war, what determines whether one supports the liberal or the conservative position on any given issue is what they believe about exceptionalism in general and American exceptionalism (and that of Western Civilization) in particular.

On one side of the battlefield are those who reject the notion of cultural exceptionalism. They are the “multiculturalists” and the “Citizens of the world” who are convinced that those who recognize America’s unique greatness are not only bigots (“xenophobes” and “nativists”) but dangerous bigots whose blind adoration of America’s unique culture can only lead to war and with it the poverty, crime and injustice that war inevitably brings.

I've noticed similar sentiment around here, a lot of folks hoping that by not actively securing Western interests that somehow the rest of the world will just accept us as fellow citizens and all will be well. That by downplaying our remaining power, we might somehow buy favour. That by running to the hills and hiding, the foreign hordes will somehow dismiss us.

There's nothing wrong with war, assuming we gain from it. There's nothing wrong with crime or poverty, as long as it's within the ranks of the opposition. Injustice is a measure of success, either we have the power or they do...and one of us is going to get stepped on.

There has not been a bigger divide in the united states as there is today since the war between the states of 1861-65. we are not there yet but I see it coming over the horizon. We as the united states are so divided today on many issues. You name the issue there is a divide. When obama got into office and started his massive spending programs states started talking secession for example the Texas governor mentioned it in a speech. I could not believe my ears when he said that. It used to be a civil divide but today hatred is creeping into it. Both sides hate each other now and the name calling is starting. It is ironic that the last time states started talking about secession in the past it was about blacks, and today with a first black president some people are talking secession again.

Funny you mention Gov. Perry as an example. You ought to see his campaign ads, they always start with big picture of President Obama and then they slide into a sly line how he's going to save all Texans and Texas from that Nigger and the U.S. Government. There is still a lot Racial Hatred and Secessionist sympathy in the State which he's appealling to and it might get him reelected. One thing he's forgotten, is the largest U.S. Military base is located in Killeen. They don't have far to go to put down an insurrection.

As for the Democrats they are the party of "Tax and Spend" and did inherit a War on two fronts from the Republicans and an Economy that has cratered all across the board due to Republican fiscal irresponsibility and lack of proper Management. So what are the Republicans now known as? The Party of "Cut Taxes and Spend". So which of the two will get us to the Abyss faster?

If the Republicans are out to destroy the Federal Government and the Nation, they have got an excellent track record... ;)

That might be but why is it people of all across the country are tired already of democrats tripling the national debt in a year and a half since Obama took over. States like New Jersey have a republican governor now for the first time since how long that has been. Honestly I believe it is not the 2 parties but the progressive movement that is destroying our country. :(

It's not so much that Americans are tired of the spending, it's more a case that Americans are tired of spending on the theives that created this mess. Wall Street, K Street and their minions. Who are now giving themselves huge bonuses for "turning around the Stock and Bond Market" while workaday Americans who pay the taxes are still unemployed and slowly slipping into Bankruptcy and Penury.

And I won't even mention the trillion dollar payouts to Third World Countries to help the populous (Iraq and Afganistan especially), only to find that the money has gone only to fatten the Swiss Bank Accounts of the Military-Political-Economic Elites of these Countries. As for the likes of Haiti, now they are confronted with a major Cholera epidemic because the billion dollar donation to repair and upgrade the water treatment and sewage treatment facilities and the distribution/collection systems has gone missing. Guess where?

This isn't a Democratic problem or even a Republican one. It's one of a corrupt World Economic Order. It's always been this way, it always will be. Time for us Americans to wake up and start looking out for our own interests.

Obama is only continuing the politics of Bush II. there is not really that much difference. (beside BushII most likely wouldn't have touched 'health'-care but I am sure IF the outcome would have been the same: cooporations gain)

Politicians need money to succeed, corporation supply the money to both sides (Goldman Sachs gave money to Obama and McCain for example) so they will have to repay their donors.

Politicians are therefore not free anymore but have to decide what the cooperations want, then they do a few cosmetics and sell those to the public.

The MSM are part of the game, as they never expose coorporations for the corruption they produce.

coorporations are under the control of the central banksters who are jewish.

What that basically means is that the government we have is not american but follows zionist jewish bankster interest.

That is why one bad thing follows the next. Until we the people get the corruption under control the situation is going worse.

As it looks the struggle started with the TEA party, the outcome is unknown.

So it is better to be prepared for the worst and hope (and work) for the best
