The prevalence of Mongolian spots varies among different ethnic groups. This condition is most common among Asians. It also has been reported in 80% of East African children, in 46% of Hispanic children, and in 1-9% of Caucasian children. http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic271.htm

Mongolian spot is a pigment patch occurring mostly at spine base area of new borne babies, described as smooth bruise-like lesion of irregular shape. Patches of same kind may eventually appear also on upper back, shoulders, arms, buttock or elsewhere. Usually they disappear during the first years of child.

The phenomenon seems to be characteristic for people of mongoloid races, following statistics may be given - Asian: 95-100%, East African*: 90-95%, Native American: 85-90%, Hispanic: 50-70%, Caucasian: 1-10%. Other sources report only 40-50% Hispanics and even less Caucasians.

In Czech anthropological brochure “Jak se měří člověk.” (How to measure man.) is remark on higher incidence of Mongolian spot in Hungary, however no numbers are given.

I would be thankful if somebody can provide me with information on this among Fenno-Ugric nations. Anybody knowing of possible presence of it in modern Sami?

*Alternative names: Semitic mark, Semitic stain!!!

Maybe this will help ?

Birthmarks in 4346 Finnish newborns.

Various birthmarks were recorded for 241 of 4346 babies, i.e. for 5.5% of all newborns.

Well, East Africans are not really mongolid races so therefore the name Mongolian Spot might be useless since it seems to occur in many non Europid races even in those with no connection to the mongolids. The differences in the reports about Hispanics is most likely the result of a research in different areas. Hispanics can be Europid, Amerindianid, Negroid or a mixture of those races and obviously the Amerindian factor was higher in one of the studies.

Asians and Native Americans can be consedered as people of mongoloid descent for the purpose of this thread, together with Polynesians.

Regarding the Hispanics we may expect it to be a result of Amerindian admixture (and so mongoloid ispiration of the trait). Many Hispanics are mixes of Negroid slaves, Indian natives and Europoid colonists, however Hispanic is a cultural term far inaccurate to describe one's ancestry.

East Africans being the only non-mongoloid group with high incidence, what I also marked with the note* - being also known as "semitic mark". All together it could point at presence of a non-europoid admixture. However as occuring mostly in childhood the observation is very difficult.
