Copenhagen makes it three years in a row as the travel industry's choice for the best European cruise destination

Nearly 200,000 travel agents agree - Copenhagen is Europe's best port of call for cruise ships - for the third year in a row.

The Danish capital beat out Stockholm, Barcelona and Genoa for the World Travel Award, nicknamed 'the Oscar of the travel world'.

The awards are seen by tourism authority Wonderful Copenhagen as the seal of approval for the city's effort to spruce up its facilities and its reputation.

'It is an acknowledgement of Copenhagen's strategic efforts to strengthen the position of Copenhagen and the Baltic region,' said Ole Andersen, sales and marketing director of Wonderful Copenhagen.

Making the award doubly sweet are recent figures showing that Copenhagen registered a record cruise season in 2006. Some 400,000 guests called on the city, a 10 percent increase from the year before.

Many of the visitors used Copenhagen as their beachhead to the rest of Europe. A 20 percent increase in the number of turnarounds - passengers either beginning or ending their cruise - helped push the number of cruise related hotel stays to 215,000.

The value of cruise tourism for Copenhagen is estimated at DKK 700 million.
