A really inspiring tradition.

Locals dressed as Vikings march through the streets of Lerwick January 31, 2006, in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. The traditional festival of fire is known known as Up Helly Aa. The event takes place annually on the last Tuesday of January. The climax of the day comes with participants in full costume hauling a Viking longboat through the streets of Lerwick to the edge of town where up to 1000 paraders throw their flaming torches into the galley.

Shetland and Orkney were ruled by the Norse for about 500 years until they became part of Scotland in 1468.

Good to see some Traditions are alive and kicking :)

KraftAkt, could you edit the post, so the pictures don't extend the page.. If possible, post them downwards. If not, then don't worry ;)
