:O

I've seen this before... it's revolting, and horrid. I couldn't imagine that such a mutilating, and disfiguring, practice was ever "fashionable". :vote_no:

And the equivalent of the corset? Pfff... no way. I've constructed several Elizabethan corsets, and have worn them for extended periods of time, and though they are not the most comfortable or practical contraptions, I would not akin them (closely) to this awful practice of foot binding.

I have read that during the times when corsetry was in use, though, that many women (particularly upper-class and nobility) suffered from extreme spinal disfigurement because of wearing corsets from a very young age, into adulthood... because the corset's boning and busk were made from very rigid, dense materials (whale bone & wood), the corset would constrict the form of the body so unnaturally that it caused the spine and ribs to 'mutate' and grow into the most unnatural shape of the corset.

Even so, I don't think this can be completly compared to the ghastliness of foot binding... The occurence of bodily damage from wearing corsets wasn't exactly the intended effect, it was only a bi-product of wearing them for many years... unlike foot binding, which is meant to deform the foot into a revoltingly tiny size and shape. Bleh... no thank you. :P

I'm not really sure what they would find erotic about deformed feet and a woman who has to hobble instead of walk.

I guess she couldn't run away from her man though. :icon12:

Oh, dear. I've always found that practice to be vile. Note to self: must not gaze upon such horrors so soon after eating.

Those are hats, I believe.

But yes, south asians typically have curly or frizzy hair and darker skin, northern asians have the typical perfectly straight hair.
