Black Squirrels Spread in Area
...
Here's why some scientists believe the black squirrels were multiplying: In
winter, their dark coats allowed them to retain heat from sunlight, leaving
them less desperate for warmth than their lighter-colored cousins.

"If you can do it with solar heat, you don't need quite as much metabolic heat,"
and, therefore, need less food, Thorington said.
...
Some residents have called to complain that the new squirrels are aggressive,
driving out the friendly gray squirrels, said Bill Hamilton of the county
Department of Park and Planning.

Arcturus, being the devoted friend of animals that he is, flew to Washington and took this snap-shot on scene.. Seems the grey squirrels aren't going to be taking this invasion lightly...:D

Sort of on a tangent, but I thought I'd post it in this thread.

Illinois is the only state to have a population of both black and white squirrels.

The city of Olney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olney,_Illinois) has the world's largest population of white squirrels, at 200, down from a peak of 1000 in 1943. Black squirrels can be found in the Quad Cities area.

I've heard that Black squirrels are spreading because they have no problem getting a mate, thus, they are spreading quickly.

In the city we used to live in there was a family or group of black squirrels down the road for years. they eventually disappeared shortly before we moved(we just did not see them anymore.) that basically made a 1:4 black to brown squirrel ratio of sorts.
I've never seen them anywhere else and it always seemed to be the brown squirrels running in front of vehicles, scaring drivers. :)

I never knew white squirrels existed before reading this thread so I feel like finding some pictures.
