A suspected British right-wing activist who jumped bail has been arrested on the Costa del Sol, Spanish police say.

An international arrest warrant was issued for Mark Atkinson, 38, of Egham in Surrey, in January after he failed to appear at his local police station.

Mr Atkinson, allegedly a member of a right-wing group in the UK, is accused of publishing or distributing material likely to incite racial hatred.

Spanish police said he was arrested in the resort of Benalmadena on Friday.

A European arrest warrant was issued by Greater London Magistrates' Court on 27 January this year. He had failed to appear at Woking police station in January 2004.

According to the warrant, he is wanted for "publishing or distributing written material intended or likely to stir up racial hatred". Spanish police said special agents acting together with local police detained Mr Atkinson. Interpol confirmed extradition proceedings would go ahead once the arrest has been confirmed.
