Käki is as well a russian film I believe. I loved this film. Underlay humour within a serious and well-presented period in kommunistic russo-finnish history.

I think "Käki" is a Russo-Finnish co-production, with a Finnish lead actor.

I know next to nothing about Russian cinema, except Andrei Tarkovski and Aleksandr Sokurov. But I'm trying to learn.

Volkodav (Wolfhound) is most expected film for me. It's based on fantasy novel of Maria Semenova.

Interesting. It's a pity I don't read Russian.

Is there anything else you can tell us about this film, or about the about the author whose work it is based on?

It's the story about the man from the clan of Grey Wolves. All people of this clan was exterminated, but he managed to survive, however was turned into slavery. But he escapes the slave mines and begins his journey in the fantasy world waiting for revenge. It's quite long story based on several books. I like the books but I don't know how good movie'll turn out to be.

Have you seen "Conan the Barbarian"? This plot outline sounds like a carbon copy of it.

Are Russian DVD's Region 2? Do they usually have English subtitles?

I dont know much about those film, except that Турецкий Гамбит (The Turkish Gambit) is about Russo-Turkish war and based on a Boris Akunin`s novel. Its a spy detective movie, which continues Akunin`s novels about "adventures of Erast Fandorin" and "Azazel".

Along with TG I really want to watch "Ночной продавец" (The Night Seller), its a dark comedy :icon12:

I love Conan the Barbarian allthough its sequell is horrifying. I have learnt that they have two more Conan films frosen in pre-production at the moment. One is entitled "Conan Beneath my Sandaled Feet" and the other I can not recall. Whether they wil do any honour to the original remains to be seen...sceptical I am of course and I would not be surprised if the next filmtitle was made change to "Conan Meets His Father, Guuguubuu of the Kenyan Cheetah Kingdom."

It seem that Russia and Africa have some thing in common...

I believe they almost always have subtitles...

Actually, I am quite hopeful about the new Conan film. After all, the director is none other than John Milius the Great, the director of the first Conan film.

It's working title is "King Conan: The Crown of Iron". :viking1:

Apparently Conan will be played by Roland Kickinger

This is Johan of Amon Amarth, who is always around the bars in Tumba, which is just south of Stockholm in near of Södertälje. They are one of my favourite bands allthough Hegg and all of them drink too much alcohol and I do not like this.

Are they Viking-metal? What do you think about Enslaved? This is one of my favourite bands.

However, if he [John Milius] as well directed the sequell, then tis worthless to base any thing on the original as he had lost his mind after its making and we can only expect the new film to be what I said when I spoke on cheetahs and Kenya. ;)

Conan wil no longer look like a warriour in his steel bra. Who is this Roland? e.g. professional body builder, wrestler, florist ...

We are to thank this man for the sequell in which Conan was destroyed:

Are they Viking-metal? What do you think about Enslaved? This is one of my favourite bands.

Yes, they are true norsemen and they actually believe what they write on which is seldom in to days metal; you have never heard guitar riffs as emotional as theirs.

Enslaved
About what they write bring tears to my eyes and I love Grutle. Musically they are too fast for me as I do not like fast music. I love their keyboards in the earlier albums as in Frost or Vikingligr Veldi and the snare work of Trym was amasing; he was a good drummer untill he left and Helgeson stepped in. They have had a hard past with drummers for some reason. I have heard rumours that Kjellson is hard to deal with, so I believe this is why line-up changes frequent the group. How do you understand them? Do you speak bokmål? I became very negative toward to them when they began to be recognised for norwegian awards because I do not like to see heathen hearts beat to the drum of a modern world and this was as well the time when their album art-work became less beautiful...less scandinavian. This hurt my feelings and I began to ignore them thereafter.

I've found translations of their texts in the net. My favourite song is 793 (Slaget Om Lindisfarne) - it's just a masterpiece/

Well, I was unable to find any info on imdb.com on the title you mentioned. But that does not necessarily mean it doesn't exist. I have heard rumours that there are several Conan movies in production or at least on the planning board.

This Roland guy is a bodybuilder just like Arnie. Judging by the size of his titties, he's been popping more than a little of those ol' growth hormones.

Kukushka (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308476/) is a decent enough film, would recommend it.

http://www.thegogglesdonothing.com/images/kukushka.jpg

Other notable titles:

Spetznas TV series is quite enjoyable. The guys spend most of their time shooting Chechens and the odd KLA Albanian in Kosovo? and British agitator in the Caucasus. No subtitles, but not too hard to follow the plot.
Spetznas (http://www.russiandvd.com/store/product.asp?sku=33412&genreid=&genresubid=)

Zvezda (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0326450/) is a pretty decent WW2 film. Has subtitles if I remember correctly.

I haven't yet watched it, but Brigada is said to be excellent.
Brigada (http://www.dvdcenterclub.com/preview.php?CATEGORY=7&ITEMTYPE=DVD) and many other Russian / Soviet titles at this URL.

More highly recommended Russian films:

Idi I Smotri (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/) (aka Come and See) - Interesting WW2 film set in Belarus in 1943.

Brat (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118767/) - (Brother) Russian Gangsterfilm from 1997. Good story, acting and an interesting look at elements of post-USSR culture in the 1990's.

Brat 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238883/) - A continuation of Brat. Extremely politically incorrect, some comical conflict situations arise between characters from ex-USSR states, racial tensions surface when the main character finds himself in the USA to settle a score with a corrupt businessman.
