It's considered to be quite a good read. I haven't read it but about a year ago I heard an interview Hamilton gave on Irish radio.
I must warn you that he is not a happy man, he believes he was emotionally damaged by his parents, especially his father, who ruined his childhood and made him feel like an outcast for no good reason. With the result that even now he does not really feel at home in Ireland, or Germany. Thats what he says anyway. I'm suspicious of any book that is as popular as this one seems to be, some of the revews say things like:

"It sticks up for diversity"

and

"It reminds us that there are many ways to be Irish".

I think that the attitude the Hamilton seems to have developed would prove just the oposite.

If you have a parent who is German-Irish it might give you an insight into how they would have faired if they had been living in Dublin instead of in America.

Btw, if they had been in a rural area they would probably not have been harrased, many German (and French) children were sent to Ireland after the war and many have stayed until now. Dublin has always been relatively pro-British.Dubliners waving Union-Jack flags during British state visits led the rest of Ireland to call pro-British Dubliners 'Jackeens' or 'West-Brits'. Even today Dublin is really in many respects an English city.

From the product description:

"[H]is mother, a softly spoken German emigrant who escaped Nazi Germany at the beginning of the war."

Escaped from WHAT?
