Samsung Launches Faster 4G Telecom Technology

Samsung Electronics on Thursday unveiled its fourth generation telecom technology at the Shilla Hotel in Jeju. The 4G technology enables super-high speed data transmission, making it possible to download a century of 300 MB MP3 music files in just 2.4 seconds and an 800 MB movie file in 5.6 seconds wirelessly, the firm says. It offers data transmission speeds of up to 100 Mbps on the move and 1Gbps in stationary. It is officially called “IMT-advanced” as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology widely used here is currently called “IMT-2000” or 3G telecom technology.

”After the World Radiocommunication Conference in October next year determines the frequencies to be used for our 4G telecommunications technology, we will make up for any technological defects and start commercial 4G services around 2010 via mobile carriers at home and abroad,” Samsung's mobile telecom chief Lee Ki-tae said.

“After the year 2010, all mobile telecommunications systems will be dominated by 4G technology”, Lee said. “The 4-G technology will usher in an era where we can watch high-definition movies and control home appliances such as fridges and air conditioners in a fast-moving car. When commercial 4G services start, it will bring about a sea change to our daily lives.” Information Minister Noh Joon-hyung took part in the 4G Forum which ends Friday and is attended by some 100 experts in the field from 20 countries including telecom standards officials from Europe, the U.S. and South America.
