Summary

Mitochondrial DNA sequences and Y chromosome haplotypes were characterized in Pasiegos, a human isolate from Cantabria, and compared with those of other Cantabrian and neighbouring Northern Spain populations. Cantabria appears to be a genetically heterogeneous community. Whereas Lebaniegos do not differ from their eastern Basque and western Asturian and Galician neighbours, Pasiegos and other non-Lebaniego Cantabrians show significant differences with all of them. Pasiegos are peculiar for their high frequencies of Y chromosomal markers (E-M81) with North African assignation, and Y chromosomal (R-SRY2627) and mtDNA (V, I, U5) markers related to northern European populations. This dual geographic contribution is more in agreement with the complex demographic history of this isolate, as opposed to recent drift effects. The high incidence in Cantabrians with pre-V and V mtDNA haplotypes, considered as a signal of Postglacial recolonization in Europe from south-western refugees, points to such refugees as a better candidate population than Basques for this expansion. However, this does not discount a conjoint recolonization.

"Among the Spanish populations, a small sample of 19 subjects from an isolated population living in a restricted area (Pas valleys) of the community of Cantabria is of particular interest. The origin of this population is not clearly defined [11], although some historical information traces the peopling of the region back to the 11th century as a result of a repopulating from different sources, including Moorish slaves [12].

The newly defined HG25.2 originated on a HG25.1 background. In Africa, HG25.2 is observed in 29% Arabs and 71% of Berbers from Morocco, but is not found in those Ethiopian populations in which a high frequency of the ancestral HG25.1 is observed (R.Scozzari and associates, unpublished results [18]).

Outside Northern Africa, HG25.2 was seen at generally low frequencies in Spain, France, and Italy, although no traces could be detected in the Near East.

However, particularly high frequency of this haplogroup (42%) was found in the Pasiego of the Pas valleys. In the correspondence analysis (Figure 6), the Pasiego do not cluster with the other Spanish populations, but rather with the Arabs and Berbers from Morocco, supporting historic and demographic records that would trace back the origin this population to a heterogeneous resettlement, including also Moslem slaves

HG25.2, which most likely indicates recent North African admixture, was found at the following frequencies in this study:

Southern Spaniard: 1.6
Asturias: 2.2
Pasiegos: 42.1
Morrocan Arab: 28.6
Morrocan Berber: 71

Pasiegos ( Origins )

Una teoría dice que son de origen primitivo cántabro.
Otra teoría que sitúa su origen en los hombres del Norte -suevos o visigodos - que se refugiaron en los montes de Pas.
Muchos les atribuyen origen morisco o hebreo, Parece que en la época que fueron expulsados los judíos y después los moriscos del norte de Burgos y Palencia, algunas familias pudieron refugiarse en esta región entre Espinosa y los montes de Pas.
Es difícil, al no existir documentación cierta, precisar el origen, porque incluso la tipología es variada: los hay morenos y enjutos, que bien podrían pasar por semitas y también los hay rubios, que podrían hacerlo por celtas.



La población pasiega presenta similitudes genéticas con otras del Norte de Europa

Hace cuatro años los doctores Francisco Leyva y Pablo Sánchez Velasco se pusieron a investigar el origen génico de los pasiegos. En esa andadura han derribado viejos tópicos como el que les atribuía una procedencia semítica y han llegado a la conclusión de que su componente genético ofrece similitud con otras poblaciones del Norte de Europa. También han constatado que sus genes les protegen de padecer la diabetes mellitus de tipo 1.

Las investigaciones de los doctores Francisco Leyva y Pablo Sánchez Velasco, del Departamento de Inmunología de Valdecilla, han dado como resultado que el componente genético de los cántabros (cántabralos o cántabros), ofrece similitud con otras poblaciones del Norte de Europa, en concreto con las escandinavas, las del norte de Francia e Irlanda, con las que comparten un haplotipo desconocido y unos genes que ya había en los antepasados de Atapuerca, y en cuanto a su origen, lo cifran en un millón de años, mientras que en los vascos el componente genético es fundalmente coincidente con el norteafricano actual.
