Although this article was written in the post-War II period by an Anglo-Saxon author, Dr. A. James Gregor, I believe that it presents a fair portrayal (as least as unbiased as post-WW II material can be from a "mainstream" academic) of the theoretical components of German National Socialist ideology as it related to race.

This essay has the advantage of presenting the evolving postion German National Socialist race theoreticians held of the concept of race. The author presents his case with copious footnotes from relevant German thinkers, as well as with many incisive quotations.

I look forward to your comments, I'll offer my opinions :)


National Socialism and Race

Archive Note: This piece, published in 1958, was an early contribution by an academic now acredited as a significant author upon the subject of fascism. This essay does not discuss certain peculiar German Nazi race doctrines which survived into the war period and which conditioned the movement for eastern expansion. The present text however has advantages in unravelling the official 'positions' of Nazism at various points.

Enough time has elapsed since the cessation of hostilities against Germany to permit the inspection of one of the theoretical components of the National Socialist Movement; the element which, of all the heterogeneous elements, made National Socialism what it was: the theory of race. [...]The National Socialist theory of race was dynamic, ever-changing. This, indeed, must be the case with any theory which even pretends to be scientific. [...]

No theory, whether scientific, ethical or metaphysical, develops in a vacuum. It would be incredibly naïve to believe that any of these disciplines develops independently of the social milieu in which it arose. In order, therefore, to understand the nature and evolution of National Socialist speculations on race one would have to be conversant with the prevailing psychological, economic, scientific and social (cultural and political) forces prevalent throughout the period. [...]

The development of the National Socialist theory of race can be divided into three periods, and each period had a characteristic cast and temper.

The earliest period of National Socialist racism was characterized by the writings and speeches of Hitler himself. In many of his utterances Hitler's contentions with respect to race were no more and no less shocking, interesting or spectacular than similar statements made by any number of Anglo-Saxon eugenicists of the period. More significantly, in his specific references to race Hitler was content to employ the exceedingly vague term "Aryan" to denote his select race, founders of the State, society and culture in Europe. Under the rubric "Aryan" Hitler included all the European peoples, apparently (2) reserving the status "inferior" for non-European peoples of the world.

Nowhere in Mein Kampf does he specifically stipulate the physical type of his superior race. He refers, however, with unqualified approval to the writings of Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Even if he had not, any comparison of the general ideas on race and society found in Mein Kampf with those of Chamberlain's Grundlagen would have made his intellectual debt quite apparent. Now Chamberlain nowhere gives a specific morphological identity to his "German," although he does wax enthusiastic over the tall, blond dolichocephal (long head). On the other hand he suggests, perhaps taking his cue from Gobineau who was convinced of the heterogeneity of the Aryan type, (3) that some of the purest "Germans" are brunets, even raven-haired. Nor does Chamberlain deny creativity nor value to other races.

So there is evidence that the National Socialist theory of race at this time was more than somewhat vague and indeterminate, at least with respect to the problem of how one identified one's select race. Nowhere in the early literature of the Movement does the designation "Nordic" figure with any prominence, least of all in Hitler's public statements. Even at the close of this first period, in 1930, when Rosenberg's Mythos appeared, his use of the word "Nordic" was strictly qualified by this pronouncement: "…nothing would be more superficial than to measure a man's worth by his physical appearance (with a centimeter rule and cephalic indices). A far more accurate measure of worth is conduct." (4)

But with the advent of the thirties we enter a new and highly critical phase of theoretical development. By this time, quite independently of the National Socialist Movement, the works of Hans F.K. Guenther (5) had achieved wide circulation and popularity in Germany. The works of Guenther evinced a certain attractiveness for National Socialist theoreticians. First of all one could elicit rough parallelisms between some of the ideas of Hitler, as expressed in Mein Kampf , and Guenther's principal works. Secondly it offered, seemingly, a scientific peg upon which National Socialist utterances on race might be conveniently hung. As National Socialism expanded in membership and influence an increasing demand that its theoretical house be put in order made itself heared. At this point Guenther's works seemed to suit, precisely, that purpose.


Guenther's ideas can briefly summarized in the following notions:

(1) a race is a group of human beings which, breeding true, distinguishes itself from its neighbours by hereditary physical and mental traits; (6)

(2) the psychic traits, possessed by the various races, differ qualitatively;

(3) in almost all mental traits the Nordic Race (tall, slender, fair-skinned, blond, blue-eyed, leptoprosopic (narrow-faced), leptorrhine (narrow-nosed), dolichocephalic (7) is superior. Nordics are sage in judgment, truthful and energetic, independent, realistic, bold, courageous, clean, inventive, tenacious, prudent, steadfast in duty, competitive (only in the best sense), just, respectful of the property of others, knightly, possessed of a gift of narrative, individualistic (yet unselfish), possessed of a remarkable depth of character, a thorough-going trustworthiness, an inquiring mind devoted to natural science, a lively sense of honour, a tendency to roguish humour, a capacity for statemanlike achievements, a gift for leadership, a talent for music, a wide range of development in the mental life as well as other endowments too numerous to mention; (8)

(4) the extension and contraction of European culture follows the waxing and waning of this most singular race. (9)


These theses, formulated in a rich, scientific vocabulary seemed, at the time, to satisfy the demands made upon National Socialist theoreticians. Therefore, although Guenther's major works were completed before the succession of National Socialism to power, many of the National Socialists made them their own. This having been the case it is necessary to note two important facts:

1. Guenther categorically rejected the designation "Aryan" which Hitler favoured (10) and substituted a carefully defined "Nordic" in its stead. The change, as we shall see, was of critical importance.

2. Guenther, while he wrote with passion and bias, was sufficiently detached to make several things quite clear. He did not pretend, for example, that the Nordic Race was the sole creative human race (although that is the over-all impression one receives from his works). He does site the vast cultures of the Mediterranean bronze and early iron age as being the products of Mediterranean creativity. (11) Furthermore, he limited his racial analysis only to peoples of Indo-germanic speech.


The general character of the second period in the development of National Socialist race theory was lent by the works of Hans Guenther - a period which covered, approximately, the years between 1930 and 1934. This is the period of uncritical acceptance of "the Nordic Hypothesis." So great was the enthusiasm that minor theorists went even further than Guenther's exaggerated Nordicism. Why this should have been so can be explained largely by recalling once more to mind the psychological climate of revolutionary Germany. A people disillusioned in war, betrayed in peace, sought, in a hostile world, status and place. Overcompensation, generated by the tensions of the time, demanded not only equality but superiority.

There had always been, in the German mind, a vague identification between the "Aryan creators of culture" and German nationality. It was not difficult for the average layman to substitute Nordicist nomenclature for the "less scientific" Aryan designations and still equate, somehow, the German people with the "Herrenvolk ." (A similar phenomenon, under essentially similar circumstances, characterized the Fascist Movement of Italy with its frank "Romanita," its Lictors' Rods and Roman Salute, and its harking back to the glorious superiority of ancient Rome.)

The most grotesque product of this second period was a strange tome by one Karl Weinlaender (12) which was published with the assistance of the leadership of the National Socialist Teachers Bund in Nuremberg. (13)

In this curious work we are told, among other things:


1. The Nordic race "was and is the only race capable of creating a culture" (14) - all other races are capable of creating a culture only in the same measure as they contain Nordic blood. (15) The Nordics, for example, created Chinese culture.

2. Weinlaender will have nothing of the nonsense concerning racial evolution. He, like Hauser, (16) contends that the Nordic Race is a special act of creation. (17) "Human races," he informs us, "have evolved out of the lower animals, but each was the result of a creative act separated in space and time... The series included: Humanoids, Prehistoric Men, Giants, Pigmies, Australians, Negroes, Malayans, Indians, Mongolians and at last 'the image of God,' the Nordic Race." (18) All the so-called races (Alpine, Dinaric, Mediterranean, East-Balts, etc.) are simply the bastards of the unnatural coupling of Nordic Man with the enumerated inferior races. (19)

3. This natural inferiority of non-Nordic races is attested to by the fact that the iris of the eye and the hair, and in worse cases even the skin is pigmented. Inferiority is a consequence of the fact that the "material" used (Stoffverbrauch ) in pigmentation is sapped from the cerebral and nervous system. (20) Furthermore unpigmented hair acts as a conductor for "unseen thought waves." (21)

4. All beauty, (22) physical and spiritual harmony, tall stature and dolichocephaly (23) are the sole property of the Nordic Race.

5. Nordic blood, when transfused into the sick will promote rapid improvement (24) while a transfusion of blood from the lower races (particularly Jewish blood ) with dispatch the patient. (25)
Weinlaender's book was not an isolated miscarriage. Similar, if not equally outrageous, statements are found in books of this period which were published with either the direct or indirect approval of the National Socialist Movement. Staemmler (26) and Baltzer (27) contend that the Nordics are the only race capable of creating a culture. Rudolf, (28) publishing under the direct auspices of the National Socialist Library, quotes, with approval, Dieter Gerhart (29): " The Nordic Race, the race of our Germanic ancestors, is the sole bearer of all creative culture in old and new Europe and its environs."


Having once established to their own satisfaction the truth of these notions the theorists could commence to interpret the cultural history of the world. All culture originates with the Nordics. Since this is presupposed, it is only necessary to find blond Libyans depicted in Egyptian reliefs (along with the red eyed, green haired compatriots) to prove the Nordic origin of Egyptian civilization (30) - or to find one blond woman depicted in a late fresco in the palace of Knossos to prove that Minoan Civilization was equally Nordic (31) - while the presence of a "fair" god among the host of Aztec gods (albinism is relatively common among a variety of races) is enough to ascribe a Nordic origin for Incan as well as Aztec culture. (32) The fact that Confucious is represented as having a "full beard" while Mongolians have but scant beard is more than enough to indicate the presence of a Nordic ruling class to which the founding of Chinese civilization can be ascribed.(33)

Having succeeded to such insight we can begin to interpret personalities in its light. Since all creativity stems from the Nordic Race all creative personalities must be Nordics or bastards whose creativity derives from some (sometimes more than obscure) Nordic source. When we find those like Caesar (34) and Goethe (35) who are brunet we can ascribe their superiority to their "Nordic" stature.

Where we find men of note, as in the case of Napoleon and Nelson, (36) who measure less than 160cm, we can assign their superiority to the fact that they were (at least in their youth) fair. When we find someone like Martin Luther who was brachycephalic (round headed), brown eyed, almost raven haired and of only medium stature we may be foroed to admit an Alpine "infusion," (37) or we might designate him a Cro-Magnon survival, (38) or we might suggest that he is a Dalo-Nordic, a Nordic "sub-type" (39) - because he did most assuredly have a Nordic Soul. (40)

The brachycephals of note which might have caused the Nordicists some consternation (since Nordics must have long heads) - Hindenburg and Bismarck for example - are assigned, without mention of their suspicious cephalic index to the Dalo-Nordic Race, (41) or gracefully accepted because the phrenological "organs" for mathematics and musicality are located over the ears, and if these organs are well developed, they will deform the skull. (42) (It is interesting that Hindenburg, whom the Nordicists cite as classically Dalo-Nordic, is assigned by Carlton Coon to the East-Baltic Race. (48))

Similar adjustments would have to be made for all those who are either too diminutive (Kant, Machiavelli, Dante, Coleridge, Keats, (44) Raphael), too brachycephalic (Leibniz, Schopenhauer, Kant, Schiller, Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, Raphael, Laplace, Napoleon, Pascal (45)) or too brunet (Ovid, (46) Vergil, Horace, (47) Michelangelo, (48) Ariosto, St. Francis of Assisi, Shakespeare, Herder, Napier, Beethoven, (49) Balzac, (50) Zola, (51) Raphael, (52) Elizabeth Barret-Browning, (53) Browning, (54) Ibsen, (55) Tolstoy, (56) Faraday, (57) Tennyson, (58) Cromwell, (59) Dampier, (60)).

Having come to understand the procedure we can explain the creativity of Mussolini, who was a relatively short, barrel chested, brown eyed, brachycephalic brunet, by citing him as an example of a "Nordic with dark pigment" (61) who derived his potential from a medieval knight name Muslin. (62)


All this, of course, was Guenther with a vengeance. Guenther surveys the brachycephalic (63) portrait sculpture of Classic Roman Antiquity and sees only Nordic dolichocephaly. He reproduces Classic Greek statuary which displays tightly curled hair, smooth brow, thick sensuous lips, fleshy nose and soft chin - and sees only the flat, loosely waved hair, (64) the supraorbital bosses, (65) the thin lips, (66) the shapely chiseled nose and chin (67) of the "pure Nordic Race." (68) The same statuary of which Sergi had said, about thirty years before, "the types of Greek and Roman statuary ... do not in the slightest degree recall the features of a northern race; in the delicacy of the cranial and facial forms, in smoothness of surface, in the absence of exaggerated frontal bosses and supraorbital arches, in the harmony of curves, in the facial oval, in the rather low foreheads, they recall the beautiful and harmonious heads of the brown Mediterranean race." (69)

Guenther tells us that because among the Chinese one can find dolichocephaly, an "almost white skin, sometimes combined with handsome European features" (70) this is presumptive evidence of a Nordic strain, as though "almost white skin" and "handsomeness" are placed only in Nordic cradles. He tells us, further, in a most instructive instance of petitio principii, that because the Druses of Lebanon enjoy a relatively high standard of education, are brave, hard-working and clean, they must be possessed of a Nordic elemnt. (71) The Samnite men loved to fight and their women were chaste - sufficient evidence for Guenther.

Similar reasoning provides sufficient justification for Fischer, Baur and Lenz to discover Nordic elements among the plains Indians of North America - for they were, after all, noteworthy warriors. (73) Even the suggestion of a special act of creation for Nordics is found in Guenther's rigid definition of a race as that group of individuals who breeding forever true (74) distinguish themselves by certain hereditary psychic and physical traits. How are races to evolve if, by definition, they must forever breed true?

Even the baroque suggestion that pigmentation absorbs the "material" that would have otherwise been used in the cranial cavity is "mentioned" by Guenther in order that it not be lost to posterity. (75)

Such postures, of course, provoked sharp criticism even from dedicated racists. By 1938 Ludwig Ferdinand Clauss mocked the entire procedure of assigning certain mental traits ("ability to make judgments," "love of truth," etc.) to specific races as distinguishing characteristics. "It is true", he said, "that Nordic men are capable of making judgments. No one denies that. No one denies, for that matter, that Nordic men occasionally eat, drink and sleep - it only seems doubtful that these characteristics would distinguish them from men of other races." (76)

Similarly, if all creativity derives from Nordic blood why have the most prominent men in European history been of manifestly mixed racial origin? "Many of the men," Fischer, Baur and Lenz contended, "who are universally regarded as the greatest in history (for instance, Socrates, Michelangelo, Luther, Goethe and Beethoven) were obviously of mixed race. Speaking generally, it is exceptional to find that distinguished men exhibit a pure racial type." (77)

And, of course, as a corollary to that even sincere friends were driven to ask of these enthusiastic adherents of Nordicism: why the Nordic Race, where it had been preserved from the admixture of lower potential, in Scandinavia and Northern Europe in general, had to wait until it was stimulated by bastard peoples from the Mediterranean before it developed any advanced culture of its own? (78)

But more important than the theoretical problems which beset this kind of Nordicism were the serious tactical problems which it provoked. Ironically enough it was exactly the feature of Guenther's racism which had made it so appealing in 1930 that generated the problems of 1934. Hitler's (and even Rosenberg's) theories had not been sufficiently definitive. Hitler's Aryans had remained vexedly ill-defined, while Rosenberg had not necessarily equated physical type with individual achievement. (79) All of which seemed very inexact.

Guenther, on the other hand, with his cephalic, facial and nasal indices, his pigmentation and stature charts and his racial classifications seemed eminently suited to answer just such criticisms. His books were quickly taken over by National Socialist theoreticians, (80) summarized in little brochures and introductory manuals and disseminated throughout the Party organization. (81) But Guenther was purchased at too high a price. Guenther had told the National Socialists precisely what the superior Nordics were - the first question which sprang up once the first enthusiasm wanted was: where are they?

Guenther was painfully specific. One most not, he warned, confuse Germans with Nordics. (82) Germany was a compost of at least five European and two extra-European races. (83) Germany's total Nordic heritage was, according to Guenther, at best 45 - 50 per cent. (84) Still more disconcerting was the fact that Germany's population possessed but 5 per cent. "pure" Nordic types. (85) And this selection was made with reference only to morphological characteristics (phenotypes). One can hardly inspect the germ plasm of the individual (genotype) - that is, an individual may have, sadly, an alien soul. (86)

For in a genetically mixed population there is no simple correlation between physical appearance and potentiality so that an individual possessed of the racial livery of the Nordic must also have a Nordic soul. Characteristics are transmitted through a particular chromosomal substance, the gene. In a mixed population each individual inherits a total of anywhere from 10,000 to 45,000 genes. With a random mixture, conducted over at least the last three thousand years (i.e., the presence of mixed types in the earliest "Nordic" graves (87)) the number of gene combinations would be infinite - meaning that the correlation coefficient between physical and psychic characteristics could, mathematically, be expected to be nil. (88) More precisely one could not say with any assurance that an individual displaying all the physical traits of the Nordic race was equally possessed with (presuming there to be any) Nordic mental characteristics. The chances that an individual in contemporary Europe should have inherited from an astronomical number of ancestors only Nordic traits are millions to one.

The tactical expression of this theoretical difficulty revealed itself in a manner which demanded immediate resolve. While it was true that a "true" Nordic (Nordic genotype) could not be distinguished from a "pseudo" Nordic (Nordic only in physical type) it seemed reasonable (at least to Guenther) to presume that where one found a higher incidence of Nordic morphological traits one would find a higher incidence of Nordic psychic traits. Now as long as this remained vague and general not much objection could be raised against it.

But again Guenther insisted on "there is but one equality of birth: that based on the equal purity clusion." "From the racial standpoint," he informed his readers, "there is but one equality of birth: that based on the equal purity of Nordic blood. Racially the nobleman of mixed race is not of equal birth with a Nordic peasant girl." (89) Thus those who display Nordic physical features must be considered "most worth-while" (90) while mixed types, no matter what their station or capacity, are correspondingly inferior.

Thus although we cannot definitively identify a "pure" Nordic we can identify hybrids (people under 170 cm. in height, whose cephalic index is over 76, whose nasal index is platyrrhine, whose facial index is under (90), whose hair is brunet or whose eyes are hazel or brown, who are not slender, nor have thin lips nor firm chin). These, Guenther tells us, we must painfully identify as bastards, (91) and as such second class citizens - inferior in worth to the (at least physically) "pure" Nordic.

The impossibility of accepting such a conclusion was obvious, to the least informed National Socialist, on its very face. The immediate leadership of the National Socialist Party with about 95 per cent. of the German population did not meet the requirements for first class citizenship under this scheme. A Movement which had arisen in Germany with the promise of unifying a people, and had promised the elimination of class distinctions as divisive, found itself advocating distinctions more penetrating and permanent than class lines had ever been. (92) Men have sometimes risen above their class - no man can escape his degree of pigmentation or his cranial index. Such a situation was intolerable, and it was the realization of this fact that galvanized the theoreticians into action.

Guenther was to be specifically rejected. While recognizing the fact that his books had served to stimulate inquiry into the intricate problems of race, the pernicious aspects of the "Nordic hypothesis" were decried. The enthusiasm with which Guenther's ideas had been accepted, Weinert wrote, precipitated conclusions for which "there was no biological foundation… The consequence was often that an unfounded race-pride threatened to sunder the German people." (93)

The first clear statement on official reorientation had come from Hitler himself only seven months after he came to power, at the 1993 Nuremberg Parteitag. Hitler said: "We do not conclude from a man's physical type his ability, but rather from his achievements his race." (94) Thus achievements, not physical type, were to be the measure of worth. This principle advanced by Hitler entered the basic texts on anthropology and heredity, and by 1935 the last phase in the development of National Socialist race theory was well under way. Thieme repeats Hitler's principle and adds "the men who bear the qualities of heroism, strength of will, a readiness to sacrifice and faith have played a decisive role in deciding Germany's destiny, and they shall continue to do so even if they are not all tall, blond or blue-eyed." (95)

Eichenauer goes so far as to inform his readers that the amount of Nordic blood an individual possesses means nothing (spielt keine Rolle) in the Nordic scheme of things because "it has often enough been the case that men of extremely mixed race (stark gemischter Rasse) have conceived and more powerfully grasped these notions than the predominantly Nordic." (96)

Goebbels is identified quite candidly as a Nordic - Mediterranean (97) restored to first class citizenship. In mid-1936 the National socialistische Korrespondenz stated with clarity and authority: "From his deeds one can recognize the Nordic man - not from the length of his nose and the colour of his eyes." (98). In effect this last phase of National Socialist race theory was a complete rejection of Guenther's Nordicism. The Mongolian Race was restored as the creator of Asiatic culture (99) and the Mediterranean Race was once more spoken of as the creator of the high culture of the ancient Mediterranean. (100) "Almost all" of classical art was no longer conceived of as Nordic but as Mediterranean.(101)

We are told that "the races distinguish themselves not through their characteristics; for the same characteristics can be found in different races…For example a Mediterranean can be as courageous as a Nordic, an Alpine as musical as a Dinaric, an East Balt as cunning as a Nordic. On the other hand not all Mediterraneans are courageous, nor all Nordics. But when a Mediterranean is courageous he is courageous in a 'Mediterranean fashion' as a Nordic would be courageous in a 'Nordic fashion'." (102)

Here is an entirely different racism, an entirely different Nordicism than that of Guenther and his followers. Here there was no question of general inferiority - it was a question of maintaining an ideal as an archetype for an entire civilization. Germany had a Nordic archetype; its art form was Nordic; its literature and philosophy, its music and institutions were inspired by Nordic ideals. Each German was bequeathed this patrimony from the original racial elements, now inextricably mixed into the German Nation, among which the Nordic predominated. It was not a question of intrinsic worth, national and racial superiority and inferiority tearing asunder the peoples of Europe. There is no transcendental standard by which to evaluate racial differences.(103) A people characteristically Mongolian treasures a Mongolian heritage and ideal, a Mediterranean people a Mediterranean one. (104)

Dr. Walter Gross, head of the Rassenpolitische Amt of the National Socialist Party, said: "We appreciate the fact that those of another race are different from us… Whether that other race is 'better' or 'worse' is not possible for us to judge. For this would demand that we transcend our own racial limitations for the duration of the verdict and take on a superhuman, even divine, attitude from which alone an 'impersonal' verdict could be formed on the value or lack of such of the many living forms of inexhaustible Nature." (105)

Less than a year later, in 1939, he defined the official position of mature National Socialist race theory:


"A serious situation arose through the fact that other people and States, because of German race laws… felt themselves attacked and defamed … For example the whole world of the Far East remained for a long time under the impression that the Germans… had designated them as non-Aryan, and as non-Aryans inferior rabble - (that the) Germans had designated (them) unworthy, second class humanity and that the Germans imagined themselves as the sole bearers of culture… What could we say to those who saw in German racism a fundamental defamation of men of other races?

We could do nothing other than, with patience and conviction, repeat that German racism does not evaluate or deprecate other racial groups… It only recognizes, scientifically, that differences exist… We have often been disturbed by the indiscretion or even stupidity in our own land when, just after we had carefully made clear to some people or other that we respected and honoured… their racial qualities, some wild fool manufactured his own ideas about race and declared that these same people were racially inferior and stood somewhere below the cow or the ass, and that their characteristics were degrading or impure and lord knows what else! By such idiotic assertions were repelled and offended not only alien peoples in distant parts of the world but even our own neighbours in Europe, many times even friends of National Socialist Germany bound to us historically and in destiny." (106)


Finally, late in the war, even under the gathering shadows of defeat, the Headquarters of the Reichsfuehrer-SS published the work of Dr. Ludwig Eckstein. He carefully dissected the remains of the Nordicism purchased over a decade before at so high a cost, and concluded: "While supporting our own race, and if necessary fighting against other races to protect its right to existence, we should not overlook the fact that almost all races display something in themselves that is sound and biologically resolved and therefore beautiful, natural and valuable… Each race carries first of all the measure of worth in itself. When once we understand this then we do not foster feelings of inferiority in others, a consequence that the hitherto existing race theories have too often achieved…" (107)


It was in this last phase that National Socialist race theory was cut off. Of this last phase all to little is known outside the immediate intellectual circle which fostered it. Upon the cessation of hostilities the work of half a decade was scattered or destroyed - to leave only the tragic-comic image of the Nordicism of Guenther and his followers, to appear and reappear as the popular misconception of the National Socialist theory of history.

Actually the elements of a far more profound theory are to be discerned in the few surviving books that mark the last dynamic phase of development of a concept of race free of the encumbrances of a hysterical Nordicism. (108) As early as 1933 the first elements are to be found in Merkenschlager (109) - later some appear in von Eickstedt, (110) and still later in Gross. (111)

In Italy the same tendencies revealed themselves in the Fascist Race Manifesto of 1938, and in the work of Maggiore (112) and Franzi. (113) Everywhere the talk was no longer of fixed and immutable races, (114) but of races in formation, the components for which arise out of the crucible of the past - races in formation cast over by the ideal of a living heritage - for Germany a Nordic Mythos, for Italy an animating devotion of Romanita. The talk is of races yet to be fashioned by living an ideal, united by a common destiny, nurtured in a common environment, the political expression of which is Nationhood. (115)

Here are the germs of a world-view which makes of man a creator, a builder of future races; a philosophy which unites history, politics and race, eugenics and humanism, pride in self and respect for others, a philosophy scientifically sound and emotionally satisfying. This is the promise of a world-view as yet half-formulated and ill-expressed, with which our time must contend; the Weltanschauung which bears within itself the promise of Nietzsche's Good European.

Very good article! Fade postd this a while back at the Phroa, when we had arguments with with Nordicists. Such extremists are also not realy true friends of the nordic race, because they antagonize others and create a hostile counterreaction. They actually behave like Jews, thinking they are some divine "chosen people", born to rule the world. The determination of ones own race does not lie in ones own hands. We can not pick our own parents. We are born the way we are and have to make the best of it for the community of our folk. Those bloated nordicists, who were born blond and long skulled, who have nothing better to do then admire themselves in the mirror and talk endlessly of how great they themselves are (without having achieved shit in life!), are nothing but a caricature and an insult to the nordic race.

I, certainly nothing even close to being a national socialist, facist, or even racialist have always been curious about Hitler's ideas of which races were superior and which races were inferior.

I know some basics. But that's about it. Such as how he thought that blacks, jews, and mongoloids/gypsies did not deserve to live. And that all people (sub-race unimportant) from my country (Poland) were inferior and fit only as slaves for Germans. However there is much I curious about and would liek to know?

1. I know that Hitler considered the nordics to be the superior race, and some races to be subhuman. But what races were considered just "normal" by WWII era facists?
2. If according to Hitler the more aryan you are the superior, does that mean Nazi creed dictates Scandanavians are superior to Germans?
3. What did Hitler and his Nazis think of the French?
4. The mediteranian races?
5. The alpine and dinarid races?
6. Exactly what was the deal with him considering the chinese inferior but the japanese superior?
7. About the slavs, was Nazi hatred of slavs a cultural, racial, or ethnical (by country) thing?

That Nazi's racial policies were based more on politics and convenience than anything else. Personally I do not think the National Socialists liked the Japanese though. The Japanese were just used to fight America. In the POW camps in America the Germans and Italians hated the Japanese and cosidered them inferior. Hitler could care less about the Mongoloid races.

"Aryan" is word often used by many groups for different things and purposes.
Most of the time Aryan meant in NS just being European - member of the Western culture and European races - of course not Jewish.

Of course they were not just racists but Nationalists also and they couldnt use the same standards for their own people because that would be idiotical. Only for the SS this high and even higher standards were the reality.

Thats certainly true. But if you look in detail the Slavs werent sawn as inferior in general but just the enemies with which the Germans couldnt have made peace because their plans were against them - new settlements in the East etc.

For the Poles it can be said it is for certain that Hitler didnt disliked them until they were in full alliance with the West.
If they would have made a treaty against SU with Germany, Poles would have been treated like Slovaks or Croats or even better. (full autonomy)

So the political reality sometimes lead to shorttime decisions which were necessary, but in later steps all Nordid or better "Nordish" Northern-Central-Southern European elements would have been integrated, thats quite obvious.
But with a certain policy to support to forward the Nordid race with population policy, mostly peacefully I think.
(more children and special furtherances, support for Nordid/Dalofaelid families.

If you think about his view on Russians you have always to keep in mind the German experiences with Russia in WWI as a poor country with poor soldiers and an army without discipline.
"Ready to get colonized" and be freed from Bolshevism...

About Japan I can say that it was just accepted as the dominant power of East Asia and therefore the natural enemy of SU and USA which supported both Chinese groups and were (especially USA/GB/AUS the Anglosaxon nations) relatively active in the region.

Before that decision and the Chinese (National Chinese) policy with the USA Germany supported China.

It was just a decision by similar interests and of course Hitler wanted just to destroy Bolshevism and get the lands of the East, nothing else.
So everyone which let him do that or would have supported his Germany/Germanic Reich would have been accepted.

The Japanese were examined by the German anthropology and they said following: First known stratum were the Ainuids, followed by Palaemongolids which couldnt conquer the Ainu land and only with stronger Mongolid support from the more progressive Sinid/Tungid people the Mongolids could conquer Japan.

They knew that with the exception of stronger Ainu influence Japan and China were essentially of the same races and I dont know anything about racial prejudices against the Chinese.
Germany admired in a way the Japanese discipline and success and the same was true for Japan, but that had not too much to do with race.

They had just the same enemies (Communists and Liberals/Anglo-nations) and both wanted to be the dominant powers of a controlled region. (Central/Eastern Europe-Eastern/South Eastern Asia)

I don't think he considered either inferior; he just wanted neither of them mixed with the Germanic folk. Perhaps he did consider Japanese culture during WW2 superior to the Chinese culture back then.

Well, I believe it concerns itself with morals more than which race was genetically superior. Hitler favored the Japanese morals of honor and loyalty to the state which drove his appreciation and favor probably more for the Japanese than the Chinese. To say that Hitler truly believe the Japanese to be level racially with the 'Aryans' would just be speculation, but I believe, as Hitler has been quoted saying himself, that he favored Japanese morals equal to or superior to that of European. He has said, "Why couldn't Europe have been stuck with Shintoism over Christianity?"

Perhaps this can answer your question why.

Schultz divided his criteria into three parts: racial phenotype, physical condition, and "general bearing." He aimed his set of values to favor the Nordic type. He listed five racial groupings: "pure Nordic," "predominantly Nordic or Falic" [Falic = Brunn], "harmonious bastard [cross-breed] with slight Alpine, Dinaric or Mediterranean characteristics," "bastards of predominantly East Baltic or Alpine origin," and "bastards of extra-European origin." Only those in the first three categories were eligible to join the SS. Schultz also composed a list of nine categories of physical proportion as a guide for the physical examination of SS candidates (Hoehne 1971: 166). Candidates achieving ratings of 6-9 were passed; categories 4 and 5 were only passed after proving "Nordic qualities" in their behavior; while ratings 1-3 were failed (Knoebel 1965: 26). Himmler was adamant that his men be "of well-proportioned build; for instance there must be no disproportion between the lower leg and the thigh or between the legs and the body; otherwise an exceptional bodily effort is required to carry out long marches" (Hoehne 1971: 166-167). As to "Nordic bearing," Himmler put it this way: "The point is that in his attitude to discipline the man should not behave like an underling, that his gait, his hands, everything, should correspond to the ideal which we set ourselves" (Hoehne 1971: 167).

I remember the paragraph in Höhne's Der Orden unter dem Totenkopf where the racial criteria of the SS are explained. I wonder if--apart from his always ironic and sarcastic tone--Höhne gives that all really accurately: as far as I remember (I haven't got his book here in the moment) he again took his information about the racial criteria from some English book (through which again errors can occure in translation and back-translation, especially when the translator may be not aware of special racial terms). Such as it is given by Höhne, it doesn't seem fully clear: there seems to be, for instance, a "gap" between the category "harmonious Mischlinge [bastards] with slight Alpine, Dinaric or Mediterranean characteristics" and "Mischlinge [bastards] of predominantly East Baltic or Alpine origin"; somehow predominantly Dinaric or Mediterranean Mischlinge cry for attention, when I read this.

Well. whatever... However I can't remember having ever read the SS racial regulations directly and full-extended in their original wording a book, e.g. in the appendix, what is strange, as there certainly is plenty literature on the "racism" of that time.

Then there is of course the National Socialist use of the word which Im guessing means the Purest of the origional proto-european invaders, which Hitler saw as the "Nordic Ideal" especially people in sweden and norway, which makes sense to an extent, given the geopolitics and logistics of the area, which would seem to be an ideal haven for mono-racial breeding. But its a bit elitist given the fact that hitler was the Leader of germany and not norway or sweden, and depending on the area of germany this "nordisch-atlantisch" might be only a very small percentage of the population though it was belived Germany was a wholly homogeneous Aryan civilization. From what I've read it seems that the racial/cultural lines were blurred quite alot by Hitler and Alfred Rosenberg. For example they were thought to have believed Slavs to be an Inferior Race, which is Questionable since the slavonic nations nowadays and 75 years ago were very different racially if you were to go all the way from the serbs to the northern poles to the eastern-Russians. But really according to Arthur Kemp ,the future Germanics, Slavic, celtic and baltic all resided in the Caucuses in what is now southern russia and started their migration from 5000 BC to 500 BC in what was coined by Kemp as the "Nordic Invasion" in terms of racial Subgrouping.

This also makes sense to me when you compare indo-european paganism which all are very similar in the structure of beiefs and even the Gods are the same in many cases. So really it would seem to me that if he was using the term to denote these ancient "Nordic" ancestors of many germans and in their purest forms Many scandanavian people that it would also be true true many Polish, latvian, lithuanian, Irish etc etc would be just as Nordic as many Germans and maybe even more so. And all these countries including germany are really decendants of these ancient nordic "aryan" ancestors from the caucuses. Also according to kemp in poland and many slavic nationas there really wasn't the asiatic influence in the population as portrayed by other in regards to the huns and mongolians invading. Really the entire Hitler "hating the slavs" is very questionable to me and it would seem to me that nationalism and cultural eccentrism has alot more to do with it than just pure racial supremacy. The two later mentions would especially play a large part in such a person as hitler, a ethnic german boy born into the austro-hungarian empire. Any opinions on this? I think atleast some of it is highly imbellished if not completely made up, like this supposed quote made by hitler, which some have argued is completely made up.

Only thus shall we gain the living space which we need. Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?? "

What would be the agenda behind this kind of docementing or even the supposed lies that revisionist refute about hilter executing homosexuals as well. Is it just for the overall demonization? If the above quote is real hitler sending an honor guard to General Pidulskis grave dosen't seem to jive with it, it would be more apt to send a group of drunken houligans to desecrate it, would the turks of made an effort to "Turkicise"? the armenians? Same thing with Himmler, he supposedly hated Slavs and all people with slavic ancestry, but himmler himself was married to Marga Concerzowo a polish woman, did he hate his wife and daughters too? alot of so-called fact reagrding this specific time period smells very fishy to me, even alot of the "fact" that people on this board accept. Why Race?

To many people, any political party that mentions race is threatening; to most people, however, there is no impetus to explore the question of race. They're not familiar with any sources that mention it, and as they live in a cultureless void in which the only trait rewarded is willingness to serve for money, they are unaware of any of the associated issues. This document is written to introduce those who have not considered the issue to the implications of race in politics.

Most citizens perceive a clear division between those who will talk about race, and the rest who will not, but do not understand why crossing this line leads to related issues, such as distrust of internationalists or our government. It's not just the propaganda from government, news-entertainment media, public figures, academics and favorite entertainers, but a lack of comprehension of the context of this belief.

This article provides ten reasons why race is important to politics, and explains how one goes through changes in awareness when contemplating them.


1. It's controversial.

Society hides unpleasant truths behind euphemism or taboo. When one gains awareness of these truths, the actual motivations of people - as different from what they admit in public - become clear. Knowledge of these motivations is power, as it enables one to manipulate the system according to its function and not its publically-stated goals, which rarely correspong to its actual intentions. Because race is controversial and provokes a knee-jerk impulse toward censorship in much of the population, it will always have an intense draw to those who sense a truth behind closed doors. If someone explores race, and finds this truth, they will explore further.


2. It points out flaws in our current worldview.

Our current society is assembled according to several principles, including "equality" and multiculturalism. If there were a chink in this armor, it would direct us toward a re-configuration of society to fit new goals, even if it turned out those new goals were the original goals of its founding fathers. Furthermore, if we find significant flaws in our outlook, it undermines all of the justifications and rules based on top of the original assumptions now debunked. In this way, race is an important argument for the powers that be to avoid, because if it is found to be incorrect on this issue, it risks losing credibility with its citizens.


3. It shows a different view of history: populations.

In modern societies, we tend to think of all people as the same, and what differentiates them being the ways they are educated, the philosophies in which they are inculcated, and the economic opportunities to which they are exposed. Paying attention to race literally reveals an entirely different view of history, in which one pays attention to the motion of populations, and the rise and decline in the quality of those populations as their empires go through a life cycle from birth to death. It helps explain how ancient civilizations fell apart "with a whimper and not a bang," and how our own might, as well.


4. It provides a suggestion of a different world order.

Where currently we believe our society provides a measure of justice so that we can pursue individual comfort, and therefore, our highest motivation is money, Nationalism (government that groups countries by ethnic-cultural heritage) shows us a model in which money is a means to the end of maintaining a healthy ethnic-cultural population. It's an entirely different type of politics, and one that escapes most of the greed, corruption, crime and backstabbing of modern politics.


5. It gives a tangible measurement of decline.

Figures and charts surround us, as does a plethora of news-entertainment media reports on any given issue. How do we trust these, when one channel claims global warming will wipe us out tomorrow, and the next denies it even exists? We live in a time of information overload, where information is carefully branded by political symbolism in order to manipulate us. It's hard to see where we stand with that kind of information. However, when we look at past empires and how they collapsed, it gives us a yardstick by which to measure our own decline in quality of breeding. To understand race is to understand the breeding process which enables us to have high-quality raw human material in the first place, and underscores the importance of not only breeding only within our own race, but breeding well within that race.


6. It is a compelling reason to change society.

Supposing that the racial issue becomes important to us, and we decide that racial separation is important. Our society doesn't see it that way because profit motives dictate that we need more unquestioning workers with fewer cultural attachments, and it's important to get them cheap and without objections to any kind of labor. If we see the actual motivations behind our leaders' decisions, and we see thus the future that will actually await us if those decisions go through, the racial issue has provided a gateway to an overall dissatisfaction with society. In that is a good reason to make radical change.


7. It explains so many of our failures.

Why is it that multicultural education, welfare programs, government intervention and the like have not helped racial friction in our country, and that many remain impoverished and at high rates of crime and disease, while others are not? Repeating a failed idea is like beating your head against the wall, yet that is the history of our civil rights-based social welfare programs in this country. Clearly there's another explanation. Race offers it, and shows us how we're going in the wrong direction, and if we change gears, can avoid spending massive amounts of money to little effect.


8. It's compatible with environmentalism.

Ten years ago, it was doubtful that humankind was having adverse effects on nature. Now, as cancer rates have continued to rise and far less natural land remains, and as our climate changes and natural species disappear or mutate into non-existence, we have to take the environmental question seriously. What will save us from ecocide? Having some motivation other than money, because it's always profitable to exploit the land and not waste money fixing the damage. It's competitive in business. We need a higher goal than money, and focusing on the culture and heritage of a people provides it. Furthermore, nationalism bonds each ethnic group to its own land, which encourages stewardship of the land as an enduring property and not disposable resource.


9. The prospects of racial isolation mirror our own feelings.

If we honestly look deep into ourselves, we prefer people around us who share our abilities, values and genetics. Any population of a thousand or more people will avoid the problems of inbreeding, and thus we do not need other races, but recognize subconsciously that to breed with them is to permanently obliterate being what we were, and to cross a threshold into being something different. Knowing that all mixed-race empires through history have collapsed doesn't encourage us toward this path, but our innate will is one that seeks to avoid the submissive aspect of intermixing.


10. Understanding this issue gives us something to use to shatter modern society.

When we understand what has happened to us, racially, as a consequence of modern society, it unlocks a series of related criticisms against it. Why is it that culture is no longer thriving? Doesn't it seem like people in general are bred to lower standards? Are our lives as boring as they appear, shuttling between offices and shops and the desks of bureaucrats? The answer might be yes, if we were able to see history in the context of the health and genetic wellbeing of populations. Race is an entry point to philosophies which look at something larger than the self and treat nature and humanity together as an organic entity.


Conclusion

Our view on race is simple: different populations do not mix, as they have unequal innate tendencies, preferences, specialized abilities and cultural desires. We are not interested in measuring or assessing different races, or finding a "superior" and "inferior" classification, as to us all races are fine - by themselves. It is the process of mixing, or combining radically different things, that distills its product to a lowest common denominator without any cultural or ethnic background. These people are perfect as workers and consumers, as they have no value higher than money and no sense of heritage, therefore no reason not to fully indulge in the world of media and industrial products. They are the lumpenproletariat, the last men, and the end of the cycle for any given civilization.

We don't feel like lying down and letting this happen. We like our civilization, and our neighbors. Most of us even care deeply about people of other races, as friends and coworkers and neighbors. We want to do what's best for everyone, and that includes but is not limited to separating ethnic-cultural groups so each may determine its own future. When one awakens to race, other issues such as environmentalism, better quality of human breeding, more significance in our daily lives and less slavery to the dollar become naturally contiguous thoughts. We believe Nationalism is the future of politics, for these reasons, and are working to awaken others to not only race but the possibility of a better social order than modern society.

This book aims to set out the key concepts, debates and controversies that marked the academic study of race in Nazi Germany. It looks in particular at the discipline of racial anthropology and its relationship to linguistics and human biology. Christopher Hutton identifies the central figures involved in the study of race during the Nazi regime, and traces continuities and discontinuities between Nazism and the study of human diversity in the Western tradition. Whilst Nazi race theory is commonly associated with the idea of a superior "Aryan race" and with the idealization of the Nordic ideal of blond hair, blue eyes and a "long-skull", Nazi race theorists, in common with their colleagues outside Germany, without exception denied the existence of an Aryan race. After 1935 official publications were at pains to stress that the term "Aryan" belonged to linguistics and was not a racial category at all. Under the influence of Mendelian genetics, racial anthropologists concluded that there was no necessary link between ideal physical appearance and ideal racial character. In the course of the Third Reich, racial anthropology was marginalized in favour of the rising science of human genetics. However, racial anthropologists played a key role in the crimes of the Nazi state by defining Jews and others as racial outsiders to be excluded at all costs from the body of the German Volk. Anyone studying the Third Reich or who is interested in race theory will find this a fascinating, informative and accessible study.

I only glanced through this book. I mentions alot about Gunether and Nordicist theory.

It is true that in the book, the claim of the existance of a German race was denied by NS anthropologists. Same thing with the concept of a Jewish race, it simply didnt exist. Rather both the Germans and the Jews were a mixture of several races. Hitler in a little known 1944 speech even flatly stated that "volk and race were not the same" but that a volk is made up of several races. Another time, it is recorded how he stated that Jews were of a "spiritual race" rather than an actual physical race(which in another written source he also denied actually existed).

Of course it also interesting to read about the debates concerning Christianity, whether it was Semetic or European. Many did try to claim the former, but had difficulties explaining how such a supposedly foreign and semetic religion could provide European civilization with such creative energy. So most opinion within NS circles was the latter, that Christianity was through and through a European faith.

Eichenauer goes so far as to inform his readers that the amount of Nordic blood an individual possesses means nothing (spielt keine Rolle) in the Nordic scheme of things because "it has often enough been the case that men of extremely mixed race (stark gemischter Rasse) have conceived and more powerfully grasped these notions than the predominantly Nordic." (96)

Goebbels is identified quite candidly as a Nordic - Mediterranean (97) restored to first class citizenship. In mid-1936 the National socialistische Korrespondenz stated with clarity and authority: "From his deeds one can recognize the Nordic man - not from the length of his nose and the colour of his eyes." (98)

In effect this last phase of National Socialist race theory was a complete rejection of Guenther's Nordicism. The Mongolian Race was restored as the creator of Asiatic culture (99) and the Mediterranean Race was once more spoken of as the creator of the high culture of the ancient Mediterranean. (100) "Almost all" of classical art was no longer conceived of as Nordic but as Mediterranean.(101)

We are told that "the races distinguish themselves not through their characteristics; for the same characteristics can be found in different races…For example a Mediterranean can be as courageous as a Nordic, an Alpine as musical as a Dinaric, an East Balt as cunning as a Nordic. On the other hand not all Mediterraneans are courageous, nor all Nordics. But when a Mediterranean is courageous he is courageous in a 'Mediterranean fashion' as a Nordic would be courageous in a 'Nordic fashion'." (102)
Here is an entirely different racism, an entirely different Nordicism than that of Guenther and his followers. Here there was no question of general inferiority - it was a question of maintaining an ideal as an archetype for an entire civilization. Germany had a Nordic archetype; its art form was Nordic; its literature and philosophy, its music and institutions were inspired by Nordic ideals. Each German was bequeathed this patrimony from the original racial elements, now inextricably mixed into the German Nation, among which the Nordic predominated. It was not a question of intrinsic worth, national and racial superiority and inferiority tearing asunder the peoples of Europe. There is no transcendental standard by which to evaluate racial differences.(103) A people characteristically Mongolian treasures a Mongolian heritage and ideal, a Mediterranean people a Mediterranean one. (104)

Hello? It looks rather as if here single quotes from authors are taken and twisted and rearranged just as they fit. Eichenauer: He was a follower of Günther, he takes Günther's concepts, and he even says in that book explicitely and clear enough in whose paths he walks. Besides, Günther says himself that different races have their worth in themselves, and that a negative valuation of un-Nordicness is a measure from a Nordic position, and that there was no "naturally" inferior race.


It was in this last phase that National Socialist race theory was cut off. Of this last phase all to little is known outside the immediate intellectual circle which fostered it.

Upon the cessation of hostilities the work of half a decade was scattered or destroyed - to leave only the tragic-comic image of the Nordicism of Guenther and his followers, to appear and reappear as the popular misconception of the National Socialist theory of history.

Actually the elements of a far more profound theory are to be discerned in the few surviving books that mark the last dynamic phase of development of a concept of race free of the encumbrances of a hysterical Nordicism. (108)

As early as 1933 the first elements are to be found in Merkenschlager (109) - later some appear in von Eickstedt, (110) and still later in Gross. (111)

Don't know what he means with exemplifying a n alleged phasis of "few surviving books" with a quote by Staemmler in an annotation ... Whatever, it is for everyone who knows the backgrounds laughable to speak of National Socialism turning towards Merkenschlager's ideas of race. The books of Merkenschlager and his buddy Saller were actually banned in 1934/35, and there was set from a clear final stroke under their ideas of race by the NS authorities. (Merkenschlager himself even was sent on vacation into a concentration camp, one can read in the literature.)

Actually, Groß, the leader of the Rassenpolitisches Amt, was the one who put in the discussion a final stroke under the ideas of Saller and Merkenschlager and for typological race, against "folk race" and for a general ideological orientation to Günther.

It is also ridiculous to throw Eickstedt into one pot with Merkenschlager and to portray him as an exponent of that direction. Yes, he speaks of "racial dynamics" etc., surely, but actually one can hardly insist more on a typological concept of race and the difference between "form-race" on the one and folk, people, "vital-race" on the other side than he did. In the chapters about definition of race in his Forschung am Menschen, there are clear side blows against the Saller-Merkenschlager school.


The first clear statement on official reorientation had come from Hitler himself only seven months after he came to power, at the 1993 Nuremberg Parteitag. Hitler said: "We do not conclude from a man's physical type his ability, but rather from his achievements his race." (94)

94. cf. Baynes, Hitler Speaks, 1922-39, I, p. 469 "…nicht nur von der Rasse auf die Faehigkeiten schliessen, sondern von der Faehigkeit auch auf die Rasse."

Ah, well, as one can see clearly, it needs an incorrect and sense-twisting translation of a Hitler quote to stress the argument. What Hitler actually said here was: "... to conclude not only from the race to the abilities, but also from the ability to the race."--"Only" and "also" (and not "rather"): little but for the sense probably not absolutely unimportant words.

And that whole results in the conclusion that race was generally understood by the National Socialists in a rather holistic and not in a purely physical and one-sided way (and that it was already with the alleged "materialist" Günther, by the way). Besides, if a single sentence of Hitler is taken as so decisive for the whole Third Reich's following racialist orientation, it would not be wrong to throw a look at Hitler's culture speech from the same Reichsparteitag (1933 is probably meant) which has a clear "Nordicist" orientation. And apart from that there are more "physical-biologically" or, specifically, "Nordicist" orientated statements on race by him from later years ...

A generally physically-biologically or typologically based race concept, with a certain preference of and orientation to the Nordic type, was also tought in every schoolbook of the Third Reich, and in state and Weltanschauung its highest implementation in the order of the SS. In every schoolbook or popular instruction work on race from the Third Reich you'll find a general orientation to Günther's ideas--and not to those of Merkenschlager ... I don't really know how one can seriously say that race or, respectively, the perception of different sub-races or subracial elements also within the German people and the postulate of the Nordic race as ideal and destiny was bowled down soon after 1933 and finally cut off. Why that fuzz with a racial bureaucracy, with subracial categories and racial analyses, regarding, e.g., the return of the splint Germandom from the Soviet sphere during the war? Surely subracialism and Nordicism was in a fruitful field of tension with the national idea of the Volksgemeinschaft, and it was never exeggarated and lead to the level of absurdity in a way that it would disunite the Volksgemeinschaft. But disposed and cut off? Hardly.

That text just deals with the character of racial soul and how souls of different races form together the German soul. It doesn't, however, declare the racial soul as a free hovering subject, independent from the physically cognizable entity race, but it names the racial lines and racial structure of Germany and its single racial components as the basis of the folk's soul and its single shapes and elements. Apart from the Nordic race, the specific names of the contributing races are not told in this excerpt, nor are their bodily chracteristics depicted here; one can easily find arbitrary texts with similar conclusions on soul and spirit where they are, however. (It is clear, for example, that the named coziness is identified with Alpine and the ability for music with Dinaric race). Also the Nordic race is proclaimed as leading element for Germandom.

That it is said that there is no automatical and necessary correlation between every individual's physical appearance and the "ideal" soul that should be present with his body has to do first with the idea that the mixing and ancestral overlapping of the race types must be taken into consideration so that the realized phenotype needn't show one's racial wholeness fully and may individually diverge even stronger from the actual share one has of a race / of racial elements; furthermore with the circumstance that such posited somatopsychical types of man correspond recognizably with the racial reality, but are "ideal types", or, respectively, that biological types should not be expected to be found in their real and actual existence and being as abstracted ideal types; then with question of activeness and inactiveness of mental dispositions, which have to be "evoked" and fully tapped through positive challenges, and with different possibilities of different coinages and the positive and negative turn of a basic soul structure.

But actually one can find preventive statements of a not total and absolute correlation of the racial body-soul "ideal types" necessarily with every individual, and of the possible divergency between body and soul, also already in the works of the hardcore "materlialist" and "Nordicist" Günther.

Nordgau's replies are excellent! Really, his knowledge about the literature of that time is remarkable and unchallenged as is his general competence on that field of historical anthropology in Germany and abroad. :thumbup

The initial text is not that bad, some criticism and points being noteworthy and true, however, many parts being just the result of intential distortions of the real picture one would get if looking at the facts unbiased and more carefully.


The books of Merkenschlager and his buddy Saller were actually banned in 1934/35, and there was set from a clear final stroke under their ideas of race by the NS authorities.

Günther made his mistakes and errors, I always said that too, his Nordicism was too extreme, too one sided in my opinion, but he was in many important things absolutely right and an important as well as positive figure. But Saller-Merkenschlager were much more problematic, Saller made some methodological progesses, but overall if reading his works, one immediately gets the impression of an incompetent layman which should have better worked as a helper in anthropometric survey for more talented and intelligent anthropologists. So to draw a ridiculous picture of "Günther and his followers", ignoring the true Ns. reactions and to make a caricature out of the whole literature by quoting the most confused minds of that time and their distorted views on race matters can only be qualified as being bad intention.

Sure, such absurdities really existed and extreme Nordicism is a fallacy, but this view on it goes to far. But I can largely agree with the last sentences (if ignoring that they lumped so different people together, including the great v. Eickstedt), even if the authors intention might have been a somewhat different intention. Namely that "race is a process" is something the good old v. Eickstedt always repeated and its about forming an environment in which positive biological developments being possible, both by providing a healthy social unit and by using human Eugenic methods. Because race is not that static and for getting positive developments both on the socio-cultural and biological level one has to provide a favourable environment and functioning system first, otherwise even positive elements can degenerate on the long run.

That Nazi's racial policies were based more on politics and convenience than anything else. They said Slavs were inferior, so they were justified in trying to exterminate them

I wish people would do some reading about Nazi Germany and Hitler policies before believing the crap about Nazi racial extermination.

During WW2 the International Committee of the Red Cross conducted and compiled several reports when visiting several Nazi concentration camps. They found no indication of extermination or abuse.
