Some information on national personifications:

A national personification is an anthropomorphization of a nation; it can appear in both editorial cartoons and propaganda. Some early personifications in the Western world tended to be national manifestations of the majestic wisdom and war goddess Minerva/Athena, and often took the Latin name of the ancient Roman province. Examples of this type include Britannia, Germania and Helvetia.

Ola Nordmann is a name for to the average Norwegian, a representative for the whole population in general.

The media often uses "Ola Nordmann" to describe trends in the population.

For example: A headline in a newspaper that reads Norwegians consume less milk could be just as well read Ola Nordmann drinks less milk.

Caricatures of Ola Nordmann as a national personification of Norway usually depict him as a blond-haired man dressed in bunad-like traditional folk clothing and wearing a woollen red top cap - the traditional headwear of a Norwegian gnome or nisse. This character is meant to represent the Norwegian people as a whole.Click here (http://forums.skadi.net/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fskatt.vg .no%2Fgfx%2Fola_nordmann.jpg) for another one.

Lady Columbia use to be a popular symbol of the US from the 1780s to around WWII. Her image frequently appeared on US coinage.

http://www.wirednewyork.com/landmarks/liberty/images/liberty.jpg

The Statue of Liberty is also a popular symbol of the US. I personally dislike the statue because it has become a pagan goddess of immigration & multiculturalism.

Hmmm, I don't see anything un-Germanic about Inti and other solar symbolism if that is what you mean... Probably even more Germanic than some of the Masonic and Jewish symbolism posted already which was stolen from other, even older, peoples and religions. :p

Seeing as our country is very young compared to the history of our people, there's a thin line between national symbols and cultural symbols, but here goes:

This painting shows "Manifest Destiny" (the religious belief that the United States should expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean in the name of God).

In 1872 artist John Gast painted a popular scene of people moving west that captured the view of Americans at the time. Called "Spirit of the Frontier" and widely distributed as an engraving portrayed settlers moving west, guided and protected by a goddess-like figure and aided by technology (railways, telegraphs), driving Native Americans and bison into obscurity. It is also important to note that angel is bringing the "light" as witnessed on the eastern side of the painting as she travels towards the "darkened" west

In High Icelandic symbolism Fjallbarnið (the Child of the Mountains) is the son of Fjallkonan (the Woman of the Mountains) and Bergrisinn (the Rock Giant). Fjallkonan is the female incarnation of Iceland, whereas Bergrisinn is one of its four protectors, depicted in the national coat of arms. The promise of redeeming Icelandic from impurities is reflected in Fjallmæðgin, the montane mother with her child, an image which can be considered as a Nordic equivalent to a pieta with the Virgin and Jesus. Furthermore, a child is often seen as a promise and Fjallbarnið has received the best of two worlds: the beauty and scaldic powers of the Mountain Lady and the strength of the Rock Giant. The Mountain Child can be looked upon as the linguistic "Messiah of Crymogæa."

I've taken an interest in floral emblems/state flowers. In a number of countries, plants have been chosen as symbols to represent specific geographic areas. Some countries have a country-wide floral emblem; others in addition have symbols representing subdivisions.

The floral symbols for some Germanic countries:

The Thistle as symbol of Scotland (to stick with the flowery plant theme of the last post)

113717

The Scottish thistle is a resilient little weed has always bloomed across Scotland's landscape, but it wasn't until the 13th century that it's place in the country's symbolism and written history began.

One of the best-known thistle legends takes place in the mid 13th century during a surprise invasion by the soldiers of the Norse king, Haakon, at Largs (one of western Scotland's coastal towns).
The story has it that after coming ashore, this Viking force planned to creep up on the Scottish Clansmen and Highlanders and overcome them while they slept.
This amount of stealth required that they go barefoot - which proved to be their undoing.
Unfortunately for these unwary invaders, one of their soldiers bare feet came down hard on a Scottish thistle and his cries of shock and pain were enough to wake the sleeping Scots.
Leaping to their feet, the clansmen charged into battle and the rest, as they say, is history... and yes, the fiery Scots were victorious :)
Legend has it that because of the heroic role the plant played in the outcome of the battle, the thistle was immediately chosen as a national emblem.
Now, how much of this is truth no-one knows, but we do know that by the 15th century the Scottish thistle was being used as a national emblem.

https://www.scottish-at-heart.com/scottish-thistle.html

-------------------

There are thistles in the yard here and perhaps the little ones laying close to the ground are worse than the giant ones which have grown high if left alone (at least you know they are there). Those little ones laying close to the ground on a grassy path are terrible to walk on LOL.

The thistle shows up in countless Scottish objects including kilt pins, sporrans, drinking flasks, "sgian-dubhs" (hidden knife ... now a little symbolic knife kept in the top of one of the "hose" (long thick socks worn with a kilt - although I wear mine all the time in cold times of the year).

The Alpine Gentian (Enzian) is, together with the Edelweiss, the national flower of Austria. Gentians are notable for their mostly large, trumpet-shaped flowers, which are often of an intense blue. Much like the Edelweiss, this flower has shaped the world's image of Austria and its mountaineous regions.

On a stamp and on the back of the Eurocent (2002):

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/fd/51/4f/fd514f73fbd9c795b916406ca1356dbf--going-postal-mail-art.jpg

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/V2QAAMXQysxR9a8l/s-l225.jpg

It was in the Alps, while travelling through Bavaria and Austria to Italy that the English novelist and poet D. H. Lawrence encountered the flower and saw passion for life in its color. This image inspired him to write one of his best known poems, Bavarian Gentians, which links the flowers to a pagan mythology of death and rebirth:

Bavarian gentians, big and dark, only dark
darkening the daytime torch-like with the smoking blueness of Pluto’s gloom,
ribbed and torch-like, with their blaze of darkness spread blue
down flattening into points, flattened under the sweep of white day
torch-flower of the blue-smoking darkness, Pluto’s dark-blue daze,
black lamps from the halls of Dis, burning dark blue,
giving off darkness, blue darkness, as Demeter’s pale lamps give off light,
lead me then, lead me the way.

https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f7/b3/ab/f7b3ab08a8d6bff881bb382494393f4e.jpg

Gentian leaves and roots have been used in traditional Austrian medicine as a herbal remedy (as liqueur or tea) for disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, locomotor system, liver and bile, as well as pediatric problems, fever, flu, rheumatism, and gout. Gentians are also included in perfumes, weight-loss and skin care products, and homeopathic remedies.

Mountain Gentian Schnapps:

Other native flowers of Austria which glorify the beauty of the country are the Alpine Carnation, Arnica, Alpine rose, Heather and Hyacinth.

Some birds which represent the country are the black eagle (present on its coat of arms)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/16/Austria_Bundesadler_1919-1934.svg/300px-Austria_Bundesadler_1919-1934.svg.png

Courage, strength, and victory are some of the features embodied by the eagle. The black eagle has been on Austria's coat of arms for a long time, in different versions. The colors black, red and gold, were chosen just like the German colors. When the unification with Germany in 1938 came about, the country of Austria used a different set of coat of arms. This version was a double-headed eagle:

and the barn swallow:
