What Kind Of Online Messenger Do You Use?
Just curious to see what the most popular Messengers are and if there are any geographical correlations.

I alphabetized them so my ordering wouldn't skew results. Also if you feel like it please state why you find certain types of Instant Messengers more "user friendly". What changes innovations would you like to see?

Personally I prefer MSN above all others. I like the skin(design) and organization which I find aesthetic and at the same time easy to use.

Instant messaging is still in its early stages. I believe it's potential influence on global communications/demographics is just beginning.

Mainly IRC, I feel an intense dislike for MSN.

But hey, I got messenger Version 7.0.

The versions only get more childish when you want an upgrade. That's my lesson: every upgrade has its own new low point. ;)

Actually, two of my emoticons are an encouraging of interracial hugging. So, if your contact decides to give you an MSN hug (:jeer), the contact has the choice between a white fellow with blond hair (reaching out with his arms, standing left), and a dark girl (reaching out with her arms, standing right).

A way of avoiding this would be hugging the guy with the guy, which is at least problematic if your contact is a girl, or if you just don't hug men, as a man. We could say the same thing for the girls, though.

I want an MSN racialist version... yeah.

I use MSN mainly. I also have Yahoo messenger, but rarely use it. I used to use ICQ. For those who think ICQ is Jew-free, it's made in Israel :D

Trillian. I like it because I can be logged onto everything at once with no hassles. But I never even use anything on it, except Yahoo. :lol And it limits some options having Trillian, for example I can no longer send or recieve files through Yahoo when on Trillian. Not even if the other person also has trillian. There are other limiting things as well, but since I don't talk to anyone except about 3 people, then it is okay. :)

Hello, everyone,

I have a few questions about Instant Messenger.

Do you use Instant Messenger? Which are the best and most secure IMs out there? Do you log in often? Do you have many people on your friend list? Do you talk to all of them? Do you have people on the Althing on your list? Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom? Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them? Add anything else you see fit.

:)

Do you use Instant Messenger?

Couldn't live without it. I don't like talking on the phone, and don't even own a cell phone, and I much prefer instant communication to having to log into sites like myspace to check your messages, then wait for a delayed response.

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?

I use trillian. I don't need all the silly features, ads, and I hate the stupid sounds.

Do you log in often?

Usually leave it on all day, even when I'm not home, or not at the computer

Do you have many people on your friend list?

Yeah-a mix of RL friends, people from computer gaming clan, people from nationalist sites

Do you talk to all of them?

Some I haven't talked to in years. Eventually I may delete them to clear space

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?

A few

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?

Same as talking to people in person or on the phone. I talk to keep in touch with old friends, or to get the opinions of people who I share interests with

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?

Almost never. Again, same deal as 'in person'-if you don't want to talk to someone, or have a problem with someone, just say so to their face, hiding is lame.

I like IM a lot better because I can watch TV or listen to music and surf the net while I talk to people, and talk to multiple people at the same time. Also, I've always been more of a writing person instead of oral, for example I learned much better from books than from teachers. Now that even my parents have email and cable internet at home, I never use snail mail anymore for casual communication, other than occasionally sending a postcard. IM combines the immediacy of phone conversations with the convenience of email/PM

Do you use Instant Messenger?
Yes mostly MSN, occasionally AIM.

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?
I don't know which are the "most secure", but it doesn't really matter to me because I don't talk to people I don't trust..

Do you log in often?
Unless I'm on vacation or my computer is shut down, I'm almost always signed into MSN, even when I'm not home.

Do you have many people on your friend list?
Not many. Maybe 15-20

Do you talk to all of them?
Nope

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?
Yes, a select few..

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?
I'm "invisible" 90% of the time.

Do you use Instant Messenger?

It owns.

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?

Not entirely concerned with security, but I use MSN and AIM.

Do you log in often?

Every day.

Do you have many people on your friend list?

Quite a few.

Do you talk to all of them?

Yeah

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?

A couple

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?

Both

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?

No, gay stuff. I don't add people I don't want to talk to.

Also, file sending = win. Its where I got 90% of my music.

Do you use Instant Messenger?
Yes

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?
Personally I prefer Yahoo but most of my friends use MSN so I end up logged into windows live and Yahoo.

Do you log in often?
It's always logged on if the computer is on

Do you have many people on your friend list?
Hmm many I don't know I only have people that I know in RL

Do you talk to all of them?
not always on messenger there are people I never talk to on the net but their normally the ones I see everyday anyway

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?
One I think

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?

Kill boredom and it helps with the uni work when you can share ideas and info especially files

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?

I don't block people but I'm normally invisible it stops me having to remember to tell people when I'm away oh and I always log in invisible just so if I can't be bothered to speak to a particular person I don't have too.

Interesting. It is easier to hide from people online than it is offline. That is an advantage of IM.

Do you use Instant Messenger?
I have only MSN that I use now sparingly.

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?
No idea.

Do you log in often?
My work is sitting on a desk all day long, and I'm rarely in the mood to spend the rest of my day sitting in front of a second PC and chatting :shrug

Do you have many people on your friend list?
Over 100.

Do you talk to all of them?
Of course not!

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?
On my standard account, I have a lot of people I had added from Skadi over the years, but I don't even know who is who anymore :p
I mostly use a second account which is just for a few close friends.

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?
I don't chitchat anymore - I will only sit around for something important or something that needs to be discussed immediately.
Usually, when someone talks to me on MSN, I write "call me at home" because I am too tired/bored too type :p

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?
I am almost always on invisible mode.

Yes, regularly. It's almost as good as a face-to-face conversation and MUCH less than expensive than a long-distance 'phone conversation. I have some very dear on-line friends whom I've never met and probably never shall, yet I feel that I know them as well as my nearby friends whom I see every few days.

How can I IM my Althing friends when I don't even know their real screen names ? I would respond if they IM'd me, of course. That beings up the security question. I would no more chat via Instant Messenger with a total stranger than I would carry on a 'phone conversation with one, so the security issue is of little importance to me. I use MSN.

I don't know about this "invisibility mode", but it sounds downright rude to me. It seems to me that it's like meeting someone at a party, not having been introduced, and saying "Hi, there. I'm not going to tell you my name 'til I know you better, but how do you like the party ?"

When I go online, I use a screen name which is my first two initials and my real surname. How's that for being visible ?

I use it all the time. MSN mostly. But also IRC, dont know if that counts as "instant messaging" - But its something in the same group. I have noe regulations too whom I may have in my contact list on MSN, friends, family, people Ive met online etc. it all works.

I have some people from The Althing on my list, but not many. Instant messaging solves my "problem" with being social :P

I wouldn't know .. I have always been using MSN

Do you log in often?
Around once a day.

Do you have many people on your friend list?
Quite a few.

Do you talk to all of them?
Not too everybody everyday, usually I am too busy.

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?
I have several fellow Althingers in my list: Freydis, Next World, NUXiY, mischak and Sophia

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?
It is a great way to keep in contact with people that live abroad but I also have Dutch friends or acquaintances in my MSN.

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?
I usually don't block people. When I am busy I just click on the "Away" mode.

Do you use Instant Messenger?

Yep. Trillian.

Which are the best and most secure IMs out there?

Kopete and Trillian, I guess.

Do you log in often?

I'm always on, but not always at my desk.

Do you have many people on your friend list?

I do not have a friend list, I have a contact list, which is a big difference. There are 23 entries for 17 different people. 14 of them have been shown as offline for over 2 years. The remaining three at least seem to still use their account.

Do you talk to all of them?

All three, occasionally.

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?

Yes, but since well before the Althing came into existence.

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?

It is a way to kill braincells.

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?

No need to.

Add anything else you see fit.

Talk is silver, silence is gold.

- Yes I do use instant messengers.
- There are always loopholes but generally it's save if you do not accept weird links or files transfers.
- Yes I do and I talk to all of them now and then. To many even often.
- Yes, three people from the eel-thing
- I don't do chit chat usually but use it for serious conversations and I only have them in the internet and not in real life hence it's, besides forums and emails, my only social contact.
- Yes I do use invisible mode but rarely ever block people

Do you log in often?
Yes. Everyday to see who is online.

Do you have many people on your friend list?
Quite a few.

Do you talk to all of them?
No. Some of the names are old and I haven't taken the time to clean and condense my list.

Do you have people on the Althing on your list?
Yes.

Do you find that chitchatting has any impact on you or is it just a way to kill boredom?
Mainly to kill boredom and keep in touch with friends since I'm not a big phone user.

Do you use invisibility mode or block people when you don't want to talk to them?
I'm usually invisible for the most part. I don't block people since blocking is retarded.

A few more questions, to establish how Germanics communicate online nowadays.

How many people exactly do you have on your contact list?
How many of them do you talk to every day?
What do you usually talk about?
Do you excuse yourself when you need to be right back? Do you tell your chat partner(s) why you need to be right back?
How do you begin the conversation? How do you end it?
Do you IM people or let them IM you? Maybe a bit of both?
Do you use additions like microphone or webcam when you chat?
Do you have group chats?
Do you play games together with your chat partner(s)?
Do you ever delete people from your contact list? Why?
Do you let your chat partner know your real name? First name, or full name?
Do you let them know personal details about your life (in case you don't know them personally)?
Do you exchange personal pictures?
Do you use proper spelling/punctuation/grammar when you chat or do you use typical chat/SMS talk ("ur gr8 m8", etc.)
Do you use smilies?
Do you feel any affection towards the persons you chat with (in case you don't know them personally)?
Have you ever got into a fight/argument with the persons you chat with? How do you react?

Feel free to answer what applies. :)

Not really anti-social just hate talking on the phone and instant messenger pisses me off, if I need to talk I'll send e-mail, perhaps a text if I have a number. Mind my mobile is more off than on.

Prefer to leave a message on a forum and come back later on.:D
