The Vedda and Veddoid people are a group much like the Negrito and Negritoids, distributed in India, Sri Lanka and all over south and southeast Asia and perhaps further afield (see our maps Fig. 34-7 and 34-8 in Chapter 34 "What does 'related' mean"). Thee only major difference to the Negritos is that the Veddoids have long, only slightly curled hair while the Negrito have their very tightly curled peppercorn hair. How the two groups are related is still an open question. It has been speculated that the Negrito represent the first migration of anatomically modern Homo sapiens out of Africa while the Veddoids are the descendants of the second wave. Others think that the two are different branches from the same original group. Nothing has been definitively established but hopes are high that DNA investigations now in progress will bring some light into the darkness here.

This map shows those groups outside the map of Fig. 6-1 which are also suspected (on rather less evidence than most of those shown in Fig. 6-1) of being in some way related to Asian and Australian Negritoid and/or Veddoid groups. The Ainu are a group that are so enigmatic that their presence is compulsory on any such list.

Prof. L. Cavalli-Sforza, geneticist
in The History and Geography of Human Genes
Princeton University Press, 1994

"The most interesting aspect of the Andamanese is that they probably had the least admixture compared with other Negritos, and perhaps represent relics of the human bridge that may have existed 65 to 70000 years ago between Africa and Australia. The few genetic data available show remarkable genetic homogeneity for 11 red-cell and enzyme proteins... A complete genetic investigation of these groups with modern techniques is very important... The tendency to homogeneity is obviously a consequence of strong drift, but if very many genes are tested... the information collected may ... determine whether these populations represent a missing link between Africa and Australia."

''But it is amongst Austric speakers that all communities are exclusively tribals. Outside India also most Austric speaking communities practice very primitive technologies. This suggests that Austric speaking people may be the oldest inhabitants of India. They may be amongst the first group of Homo sapiens to have reached India, perhaps some 50-65 kybp. Since over 98% of Austric speakers today lie in southeast Asia, they may have entered India from the northeast.''

Cryptozoologist (but real biologist) Bernard Heuvelmans, in his book Unknown Animals, page 47 (English version) describes the pre-Veddah inhabitants of Sri Lankra, the legendary Nittaewo. Nittaewo are describes as little people, even compared with the Veddahs, and covered with hair. They had no weapons but used their short strong arms and strong finger nails to rip open the stomachs of animals and eat the entrails raw. The fought long wars against the Veddah when the Veddah arrived, according to legend. The Veddahs finally cornered the last of the Nittaewo and forced them into a cave. At the mouth of the cave the Veddah piled wood and brush and burnt it until the Nittaewo died. This happened less than two hundred years ago. Heuvelmans suggests that the cave might be found and the remains of the Nittaewo studied. He suggests they may be H. erectus.

According to Deraniyagala

The subject of the apparent homogeneity of the Vaddas deserves scrutiny. The Kadar of Kerala (von Ehrenfels 1952:4-5,152-3) have been classified as proto-Australoids: short (males ca. 158cm; females ca. 150cm) and stocky, very dark, with frizzly hair and a conspicuous sparsity of body-hair. It appears as if the Malapantarams were similar (von Fürer-Haimendorf 1965:13). But the typical Vadda of Sri Lanka and the Chenchu have had what seems to have been a different phenotype which was much more gracile and with lighter pigmentation. Any layman with a discerning eye can probably spot the occasional occurrence of the former (i.e. Kadar) type within the present range of phenotypic variability among the Sinhalese... Perhaps the group referred to as the Nittawo in Sinhalese legend (Nevill 1887), which was supposed to have been exterminated by the Vaddas in relatively recent times, was not a figment of the popular imagination after all: the possibility of their having been a hunter-gatherer group that was genetically, at least partially, distinct from the Vaddas (cf. Kow Swamp vs. Lake Mungo) cannot be discounted.

CAUTION: Readers who cannot accept homo sapiens' evolutionary lineage and scientific classification within the Kingdom Animalia read this chapter at their own risk.

This sentence is typical for USrael and shows that some people are even more primitive than the most Islamists.

Negritos are the aboriginal peoples in southern and southeastern Asia as well as in the adjacent Oceania, including Australia. Negritos have suffered a lot and still suffer from intuders into their ancestral and tribal lands. Areas where Negritos still live include the Andaman islands, the Malakka Peninsula (Thailand and Malaysia), the Philippines, Melanesia and Australia.

Negritos Among the Negritos are the following tribes: Andamans (Onge, Sentinelese, Jarawa, Andamans) Mani or Mannee (Kanang, Kintak, Lanoh, Kenseu, Yahai (Jahai), Mendrik, Batek), Aeta, Agta, Dumagat, Ata, Atta, Ati, Mamanwa (Mamanua). Tjapukai. Perogative names are Sakai, Semang, Baluga, Kingkong,...
