View Full Version : Keep Svalbard Clean!

Some years ago there was a not too serious debate in Norway on sending foreighners to Svalbard (Spitzbergen). The idea seemed cool engough then, but the climate has changed a little since that.

I agree that the old coalmines may give good shelter for certain types of refugees, the mines also keep a cosy temperature all year around, so much clothes would not be needed.

But this has a dubious side...

The climate effect has blessed us such that the temperature is rising. In few years Svalbard may become a paradise also climatic, and there may be possible to grow plants and plant threes there.

It would have been stupid to load the area with prisons and refugeecamps.

Keep Svalbard clean!

Racially what is the situation?

Why, are you planning on moving from warm Australia to the frozen wasteland of Svalbard?

Racially, there is barely any situation to speak of, since the population is so tiny. It's about a thousand people living there, most of them workers. Official stats say it's 72% Norwegians, 16% Russians, 12% others (mostly Germans and Poles), and a whole bunch of polar bears.

Maybe a holiday

It does not snow in my part of Australia and where I grew up near the beach it was so temperate I could go a whole year without wearing a jumper.

What is the Sami influence like?

A cold wasteland where a few oil workers live isn't exactly my idea of a holiday. But the fjords might be nice to look at.

Sami influence? There aren't any Sami there, since it's a cluster of islands near the Arctic. Like I said before, there's no local population there but the oil workers and the polar bears.

Yes, I'd also skip a vacation to Svalbard. I have no idea where you got the idea that it was an attractive place for holidays.

There is a lot of research going on in Svalbard. A friend of mine lived there for a year, food in grocery stores is expensive, but beer and alcohol is cheap. Svalbard has beautiful nature, and there are no sami influence.
