They are by the Scottish artist Angus McBride (an old favourite) he paints the best LoTR pictures I have ever seen also.

I have the books where those pictures are from. The "Germanic Warriors" in the first plate are actually Romano-British.

Yes, Angus McBride is the best historical illustrator of Ancient and Medieval subjects that I know of. Although he often depicts the subjects in a way that makes them look Alpine or atleast very Brachycephalic, regardless of what race they are meant to represent.
