Since you are American and the spellings of people who came to America often changed, try this site:

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx

For example: Bisom shows up as possible place of origin being: Saxony (Kingdom State) and it says there was one immigrant from there with that name. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=5&ln=bisom

Under name meaning, Line shows up as either English or French.
http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=10&ln=Line

However, place of Origin for Line could be either: England, Germany, Ireland, Great Britian, Holland or Sweden.http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=5&ln=Line

Hock place of origin is either: Germany, Bavaria, England, Netherlands, Holland, or Preussen. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=5&ln=Hock

The meaning of Hock is either: German, Duth or Jewish (Ashkenazic). http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=10&ln=Hock

Anyhow, this site can be helpful in giving approximations based upon immigration records, but it cannot tell you specifically which one your ancestors came from. (That type of info takes money.) :P
