Jewish museum planned for Oslo

A Jewish museum is being planned for Oslo. The new museum will be established in a former Jewish synagogue, and will show the history of Jewish life in Norway both before and after the Second World War.

Project leader Beate Stroem says it is urgent to document the culture and history of the oldest generation Jews in Norway today.

- What would in particular disappear with this generation is the use of Yiddish, which was the language they brought with them to Norway, Stroem says.

Half of the Jewish community in Norway disappeared during Worldf War II.

The new museum will open in downtown Oslo in a year's time.
