It's a poem (or part of a poem) by Goethe that is in the beginning to Decline of the West. Here it is:

Wenn im Unendlichen dasselbe
Sich wiederholend ewig fliesst,
Das tausendfältige Gewölbe
sich kräftig ineinander schliesst;
Strömt Lebenslust aus allen Dingen,
Dem kleinsten wie dem grössten Stern,
Und alles Drängen, alles Ringen
Ist ewige Ruh im Gott dem Herrn.

I would share with you my attempt at a translation of this, but I'd hate to butcher Goethe and incur the wrath of you Germans :D

I wouldn't be ashamed of attempting translation. I'm sure I'm not presumptuous when I say that Germans are more patient and understanding than that! Any attempt is worth some merit.

I have made a semi-literal prose translation as a preliminary attempt to understand the poem:

If in Infinity the Self flows forever in tautology, the thousandfold arch with force intercloses; the love for life surges out of all things
out of the smallest as out of the biggest star, and all pressure, all struggle
is eternal rest in the Lord God.

a tolerable poem, as poetry, would require some changes:

If in Infinity the Self forever flows
Repeated endlessly in endless repitition
So arch the sure and numberless porticoes
Upon themselves with force and impartition;
From everything out-surges love for life,
From vastest star as from minutest kernel
And every pressure, agony and strife
Is in the Lord our God but rest eternal.

If through infinity the same
thing flows, eternally repeating,
if an arch, though manifold, can mightily
hold itself together,
If all things pour out lust for life,
the smallest and the biggest stars,
Yet all this striving, all this struggle
Is eternal peace in God the Lord.

Hope this is of use for you
Rene
