From Saransk, Mordovia:

The Mordvins (Mordva) are a people who speak languages of the Finno-Permic branch of the Finno-Ugric language family.

Less than one third of Mordvins live in the autonomous republic of Mordovia (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a4/RussiaMordovia.png), Russian Federation, in the basin of the Volga River.

I was picking up a comment made in this thread:

I already mentioned that but okay, changed the topic to 'Russians' instead of 'Slavs'.

First - there re a lot of ppl looking like those guys in Russia, but ther re NOT SLAVS. Im not even sure if its right to call em Russians, cos they re obviously Finno-Ugrics. But stil, you better call these guys 'Russians' instead of all those Asian ppl, which pics some "smart guys" re usually posted and asking "oh-oh, look at this Russians! They re Asians! Oh, Russians are not white":D :P

Second - what Semitic did you see in em?

Whoaaa....talk about a nerd convention.

These guys look more eastern Finnic than Slavic....although many Slavs in Russia, Poland, and the Ukraine do look like them.

Maybe that is cos they`re Finnic?:P

although many Slavs in Russia, Poland, and the Ukraine do look like them.
That is cos if they`re really have a Slavic in them, they also have strong Finno-Ugric or Baltic mixture in them.

Well one of them looks like he has a hooked nose from Mongoloid admixture (Tibetans, Japanese and Eskimos can show convex noses) but that's not what I'm seeking after.

My issue is the somewhat pronouncedly visible upper cartilage of the nose, flattened on top:

(see the new attachments for more examples)

Why do many of the Finns depicted, few Northern Europeans and even less Europeans elsewhere share this trait?

A good orientation is this plate of Västmanlandstyp, a third Nordic type with quite slight East Baltic features that stretches to Finland:

Once I was attentive of that feature while watching TV (the news) and spotted a Norwegian, a Spaniard, two Germans and a Swiss having this during a single show. Was rather good luck, it's not that common.

Weird is that the Oriental race creates similar nose-cartilage results as these East Baltic +Nordic (+Dinaric?) mixes.

In most cases the shaft of the nose is generally broader and less wavy though.

Ummm...this kid's nose looks European to me.

From what I've noticed, East Asians have very different convex noses.

American Indians can have both types.

Speaking a "Finno-Ugric" language doesn't make you a Finn.

BTW, Finnish and Hungarian are as remotely related as English and Sanskrit. If you think all those who speak "Finno-Ugric" languages should be called Finns, you should also say India is a "British" country.
