This is it folks, a thread about cooking in Homemaking/Self-Reliance Forum.

Cast Iron Cookware is probably the best cookware one could ever have, with proper care it will last generations. Since the iron is thick it retains heat evenly and uses less energy. The best part is the taste, food taste much better when cooked correctly and they are non-stick.

I have been using cast iron cookware for years and years, I use it both for home cooking and outdoor on a fire cooking. There are now a lot of videos about using cast iron on YouTube and most of them are by people who know nothing about the subject or are beginners themselves. I have found a few that are really good plus what I do.

When I get back I should have some pictures of cooking biscuits, cornbread,pancakes and few other things being cooked in cast iron cookware.

I have used cast iron for all my life. It is one thing my mom taught me which she was adamant about. It is the best pan or pot to use and seriously, I agree, there is no taste like food cooked in cast iron. Nice you found some decent videos as there are many who do not know season and it makes a world of difference. One can re-season or properly repair a cast iron pan or pot that has been abandoned or ignored. It is hardy and appreciates being repaired...you'll know when it gives you a nice meal.

My mom has a cast iron pan, I have cured it a few times and told her not to wash it with soap, but she does it anyways.
When I have a permanent home, I'll ask if I can't just take the pan with me. In the apartment I rent, most of the pans are made with teflon.

Ok I just got back from a extended weekend camping trip, where I baked a few things in cast iron Dutch ovens.

First I baked biscuits using hot coals they turned out great, I also made sausage gravy in a cast iron pan. If you have never had Southern biscuits and sausage gravy you are missing out.

The next day I baked corn ( maize ) bread, it really turned out good.

You can cook anything in a Dutch oven over a fire that you can on a modern range, only it will taste much better.

The attached pictures show, the oven in use and the finished products. Sorry about the fire ring we were camping at National Park and since we were tent camping I did not build a traditional rock fire ring, but all the same a good time was had by all. :thumbup

Nice work! I would add, if one has never had any food cooked by a southern man who knows how to cook, they're missing out on the best food they'll ever taste...especially southern biscuits and sausage gravy. No kidding.

Cast Iron cookware is the one thing that we routinely look for whenever we stop by our local thrift stores. We have found them in all sizes over the years and have amassed quite a collection. I just can't seem to ever pass them up. My grandfather told me that as a boy, the home he was born in was hit by a tornado. Everything was demolished but they picked over the ruins in case there was something salvageable. They were able to collect a few family items and my great grandmother was able to save all of her cast iron cookware :)

I highly recommend that everyone pick up at least one skillet and one Dutch oven. Highly versatile.
