:) Queensland (Australia). I live in the Brisbane area (see map). After looking at these various pictures/places of Queensland...it has made me want to travel. I really shouldn't complain about living in Australia....as it is really a beautiful place. (when you get away from the masses & cities :D )

Okay, here are some pics of ugly Texas, USA. :P My apologies for the quality, most of these were taken with my dig camera while driving 75 mph down the highway. ;) The first pic is of a sunset near Wall, Texas. The next three pics are of a sheep run in front of Historic Ft. Concho, in San Angelo. The next pic is a sunset out near Junction, Tx. And the last several pics are out in West Texas. The final two pics are not ones that I took. I googled searched photos of where I currently am in Texas- New Braunfels.

Bedale

Bedale Hall
http://www.bedale-yorkshire.co.uk/images/hall.jpg
Bedale Church
Eight miles southwest of Northallerton
http://britannia.com/tours/yorksmon/images/bedale.jpgSitting at the end of the main street of the little market town of Bedale, is St. Gregory's Church. Now mostly a 13th & 14th century building, it incorporates tiny remnants of a 9th century Saxon church which survived William the Conqueror's harrying of the North. The early 14th century tower is probably the best example of a fortified church tower in the country. It was built to withstand Scottish raiding parties and you can still see the slot for the portcullis. There is a fireplace and guardrobe (toilet) in the room above.

The church's great patron in the Middle Ages was Brian FitzAlan, the Lord of Bedale and Custodian of Scotland under his friend, King Edward I. His fine effigy, one of the earliest alabaster monuments known, lies next to his wife at the north-western end of the nave. They were originally sited in the Lady Chapel, a chantry founded in remembrance of Brian's dead family. The monks of Jervaulx were endowed to travel here and pray for them and the unique five-light window is said to be of their work, possibly brought from the Abbey itself at the dissolution.

The church is a regular place of worship owned by the Church of England. Free Entry, but donations welcome.

Jervaulx Abbey - Cistercian Monks 1156
Four miles northwest of Masham
http://britannia.com/tours/yorksmon/images/jervaulx.jpg Apparently pronounced Jarvis. There is something of a magical quality to these largely untouched ruins in the Ure Valley. It is a particularly lovely place to spend a Summer's evening. You can admire its picturesque setting amongst the grazing sheep and the grasses and flowers which still grow high up on the walls. This must be the last of the artists' view of a romantic English ruin. Privately owned, but always open to the public, there is an 'honesty box' in which to pay for entry.

For the more historical investigator, the remains are not without interest. The church has almost completely disappeared, but there are some interesting monuments including the weathered effigy of the abbey's great benefactor, Hugh FitzHugh (1307). The associated buildings stand to a much greater height. The Chapter House is nicely preserved, still with the columns which once held up the vaulting and their are good fireplaces in the Meat Kitchen.

The site is privately owned. There is an entry fee via 'Honesty Box'.

Richmond
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Churches/NRYviews/RichmondView1.jpg

http://graphics.britannia.com/britcastles/images/richmond2.jpg Richmond Castle, Yorkshire
http://www.britannia.com/britcastles/images/clear.gif
Still impressive are the massive 100ft high keep and the curtain wall of this 11th century fort. In the Gold Hole Tower, look for the medieval latrines. The castle escaped the Wars of the Roses and the Civil Wars. Its Great Hall is the oldest Norman hall in Britain.

Hours: 15 Mar-15 Oct daily 9:30am - 6:30pm; 16 Oct-14 Mar 9:30am - 4pm. Closed Maundy Thur, Good Fri, 24-26 Dec and 1 Jan.
Richmond Church
Fifteen miles southwest of Darlington
http://britannia.com/tours/yorksmon/images/richmond.jpg The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Richmond in not in the very centre of town, but is a very friendly building and well worth seeking out. It dates from the early 12th century, but was almost rebuilt by Gilbert Scott in 1858. There are some amazing old photos of its rebuilding on display inside. Before entering, note the simple uninscribed stone near the north wall commemorating the deaths of 1,050 Richmond folk in the plague of 1597.

The Green Howards Chapel is interesting for it steps down to the original church floor level to reveal a 13th century sedilia (seat), piscina (wash-basin) and aumbry (cupboard). The furnishings are by Thompson of Kilburn, as betrayed by his signatory mouse carving. The church's great prize are the elegant choir stalls from nearby Easby Abbey, moved to the chancel during the Dissolution. A Latin inscription around the canopy reads:

"There are ten kinds of mischief in the cloister - extravagant living; exquisite food; gossip in church; quarreling amongst the clergy; diorderliness in the choir; idle students; disobedience in the young; complacency in the old; obstinacy amongst the religious and wordliness amongst ministers."http://britannia.com/tours/yorksmon/images/richmondscreen.jpg The wooden seats have a fine series of carved misericords for the monks to rest upon. Some show pious subjects, others more amusing scenes such as a bagpipe-playing pig! The church is a regular place of worship owned by the Church of England. Free Entry, but donations welcome.

Richmond Friary - Franciscan Friars 1258
Fifteen miles southwest of Darlington
http://britannia.com/tours/yorksmon/images/richmondfry.jpg There isn't much left of Richmond Friary today, but what there is was probably the best bit. The elegant 15th century tower makes an imposing folly for the public park in which it is now the centrepiece. There are just a few remnants of the south-aisle nearby. Because of their urban settings, friary buildings rarely survive and this is one of the few to be seen in Yorkshire. It was founded by Radulph FitzRadulph in 1258 for greyfriars to preach to the local townsfolk.

A less well-known monastic house in Richmond was the Priory of St. Martin. It is unfortunately on private land, but you can see its picturesque ruins from the road. They are quite extensive and include the largely Norman chapel and a 15th century tower incorporated into the present house on the site.

The Friary is in a public park. Free access at any reasonable time. The Priory is on private land, not open to the public. It can, however, be viewed from the road.

York
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Churches/ARYother/YorkMinsterAerialRT.jpg
Clifford's Tower
Surrounded by Tower Street
http://www.britannia.com/tours/york/images/clifford.jpg Sitting atop its impressive mound, Clifford's Tower is the only remaining medieval section of York Castle. It was named after the Lancastrian Roger Clifford who was hung in chains here after the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322. The present keep was erected by King Henry III in the 13th century. It replaced a previous wooden structure which had a twin on Baile Hill over the river. Clifford's Tower is notorious as the site of York's most shameful hour. The city's Jewish population took refuge there after being attacked by a local mob in 1190. They were offered baptism or execution, but chose a third option instead. They took their own lives in a mass suicide pact. A modern memorial records the event. The tower is owned by English Heritage and is open to the public. There are great views from the top.

York Minster
Surrounded by Minster Yard & the Dean's Park

http://www.britannia.com/tours/york/images/minster.jpg

The Cathedral & Metropolitcal Church of St. Peter in York is popularly known as 'York Minster' from its original foundation as a missionary church or monaterium. It is the seat of the Archbishop of York and, as such, is, not surprisingly, the most dramatic of churches in Northern England. It is simply vast - the largest medieval cathedral in Northern Europe - and displays some of the best examples of the medieval craftsman's work to be found anywhere. Particularly of note are the fine carvings in the chapter house (c.1275) and the fantastic array of medieval glass dating back to the 12th century.

The present structure was built in several stages between the early 13th and late 15th centuries. The transepts are early English, the nave is decorated gothic and the tower, quire & lady chapel are Perpendicular. Remains of the previous Norman structure can be seen in the undercroft, but the Minster has been the site of Christian worship since King Edwin was baptised here in AD 627!

History of Bishopthorpe Palace immediately below York
By Michael Ford
BISHOPTHORPE
PALACE
The Home of the Archbishops of York

http://britannia.com/history/chouses/bpthorpe.jpg

The Palace was originally built in 1241 for Archbishop Walter de Grey with the undercroft being constructed using stone from an old manor house which was demolished nearby. The Great Hall, which was rebuilt during the 17th century and the Chapel from that time still remain today. The Palace is set in nine acres of beautiful grounds with many rare and ancient trees.

In 1364 Archbishop Thornesby started to make additions to the house and in 1483 Archbishop Rotherham added the north range in diapered brickwork.

After the Civil War the building fell into disrepair and was sold to a Colonel White during the Commonwealth period. With the return of the monarchy Archbishop Accepted Frewen took up residence and rebuilt the Great Hall between 1660 and 1664.

During Archbishop Drummond’s residency he had the stables and the Gatehouse built between 1761 and 1765. The latter reused stones taken from the ruins of Cawood Castle further to the south above Selby. It incorporates the Royal coat of arms on one side and those of Archbishop Drummond on the other. The large blue faced clock was moved here from the stables. In 1766 work started on a Gothic block to the west and on the main entrance hall and the drawing room, all of which was completed in 1769.

In 1835 further rooms were added by Archbishop Vernon Harcourt.

On entering the house the striking Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture can be seen in all its glory in the entrance hall. A small Elizabethan stained glass window showing Archbishop Grindal’s coat of arms appears above the doorway. From here a door leads into the beautiful drawing room with its finely decorated ceiling, fireplace and doorway all in the pure Georgian style. The old exterior wall of the 17th century front of the Palace can be seen from the Gallery passage. The Great Hall rebuilt in the 17th century but based on that of the original 13th century room has rich plasterwork in the ceiling and the deep frieze. The windows have coats of arms of various Archbishops in colourful stained glass. Archbishop Richard Scrope was tried for treason here in the Great Hall in 1405 before Henry IV. Having been found guilty he was beheaded and was the only Archbishop in England ever to be executed. The Chapel, although having been restored by Archbishop Maclagan in 1891, retains much of its original fabric from 1241, in particular the walls and lancet windows. The attractive blue ceiling was inserted in Archbishop Vernon Harcourt’s time to allow rooms to be built above.

The Palace is not generally open to the public but may be visited, during weekdays, by groups of ten or more by prior arrangement for a guided tour.

This is the president of Jamtland during last years Storsjöyra. I have very mixed feeling for the Jamtish Republicans. I mean, sure, I love Jämtland as much as anyone, but what the republicans are suggesting is treason! (In case you dont know, which you probably don't, the republicans are a semi-political Jamtish group that advocates separatism from Sweden, and to form a republic of Jamtland) My loyalty lies with the crown of Sweden however. It is pretty lonely up here with that attitude however. Some call me Svensk knähund - The swedes pet dog. But my father was a Swede, not a Jamt, so I stay with my people, even if it is lonely sometimes.

Well, each to his own, I would not mind otherwise if they didn't leave garbage and broken glass on the ground!

It's especially maddening since that place is a part of a protected area.

Indeed! It is just plain sickening to see litter especially in the woods. The tiny "pultsarimetsikkö" included, let alone real woods

1) The Frösö Runestone (carved around 1050 AD)
The text in Old Norse:

Austmadhr Kuthfastarsun lit raisa
stain thina
auk kirva bru thisa
han lit kristna eatalant
Asbiurn kirthi bru
Triun raist auk Stain runar thisar

The text in modern Swedish:

Östman Gudfastsson lät resa denna sten
och göra denna bro
och han lät kristna Jämtland.
Asbjörn gjorde bron.
Tryn och Sten ristade dessa runor

The text in English:

Östman, the son of Gudfast, had this stone erected
had this bridge built
and brought Christianity to Jämtland.
Asbjörn built the bridge and
Tryn carved the runes.

2) The Frösö Church: This church was built by the Vikings between 1100 and 1200 AD. This was undoubtedly to Jämtland what Gamla Uppsala Kyrkan was to Central and Southern Sweden.

3) Frösö: Literally Freja's Island.

4) One of the villages where my ancestors dwelled. (Just North of Östersund)

5) Sommarnätter i Norrland

I agree with you about the separatist movement in Jämtland. It's treasonous, bogus, and pointless.

Blutwölfin - I've noticed that you have quite a few photos in this thread that were taken from an aerial view... You shot these pictures from a helicopter or plane, perhaps?

How ever you managed these shots, the unusual perspective exhilaratingly places one's imagination on the back of some giant, soaring bird... gripping feathers to stay aloft as you stare toward the swirling landscape below; wind threatening to catapult you into a perpetual tumble toward oblivion. (or maybe this only happens for those who have an overly active imagination, such as myself. :icon_redf)

From such a height, the beach scene that you have captured above, and those of Sankt Peter Ording a few pages back, have such an amazingly soft, muted quality... the sand looks as a fine velvet, or the supplest of chamois' - warm and inviting. And the colors! Oh, how vibrant, richly concentrated and full of harmonious contrast they appear from that altitude!

All of your photos are very beautiful, but I especially like these aerial views. :) By the way, would you mind telling what kind of camera you use in your photography?

Thanks for your nice comment, Eyðimörk (and Zyklop, who does it more secretly :D ) I  you both.

The photos were shot from a small plane and I almost died while this stupid pilot tried to show off with some tricks... :O

What might sound unbelievable now is that I shot all these pictures with digital cameras, one Nikon D70 Digital SLR and a quite cheap HP Photosmart R707. I always disliked digital cameras, always saying they will never reach the quality of "real" ones, but the Nikon finally convinced me that you can make good pictures with them, too.

Anyway, sometimes I think the pictures are just getting that good because I love the places I photograph...

The photos were shot from a small plane and I almost died while this stupid pilot tried to show off with some tricks... :O Oh, I know...:D "Sakkaus" must have been one of those little tricks. I don't remember the English term for it, but it happens when the speed is reduced so much that the surface tension between the air and wings disappears and the plane starts falling vertically (I think I need to take a look at my book of aerodynamics so that I can explain better what really happens). That is something the pilots must always do. One friend of mine took me to the little trip once with tiny Cessna with 2 seats. At some point he asked why I was so quiet, but I had concentrate on not vomiting, as there were no plastic pags with us. I was not willing to clean the plane afterwards... Without that bloody nausea the flight would have been very pleasant for me :P It was too late in the evening that there were no permission to fly over Helsinki, so we went to see how our home city next to Helsinki looks like. It was wonderful to see it up there. If only my stomach wasn't so sensible....

All the pictures of Europe on this thread are just so beautiful I often feel I am dreaming when I think of the danger the left poses to a genuine European homeland developed over thousands of years by native peoples. There just isn't enough of a revolt against it. The pictures alone make me so angry I could die. The process of dispossession is like asking people to rape their mother and sell her into slavery. :cry00002:

@Blutwölfin - Thank you for sharing yet another set of stunning photos! :)

Though my truest love belongs to the mountains, and the forests that are dark and so deeply wooded with trees, there is just always something incredibly special, and magical, about the way the sky looks from a beach-perspective... it's as if the flat, barren topography of coastal land leaves a skyline completely free from any organic obstruction, thus letting the sky take center stage, draping aloft like an eclipsing tent of gleaming, intensely vivid color... One never really discovers the intricate mysteries, or fully understands the palpable beauty that lies within the depths our celestial sphere, until they are lying beneath it's billowing mass, on a bed of sand beside the vigorously churning sea... only there, in such immense, horizontal solitude will the sky open up completely, spilling forth all of it's secrets, and intrigue, for the eyes of the lonely beachcomber.

Ahhh, yes... there's simply nothing like a sunset on the beach, and I think your photos illustrate that fact perfectly! Thanks for inspiring in me, with these lovely images of your's, such wistfully dreamy thoughts tonight, Blut! :P

Nay my friend, its probably a bit further east than yours ;) The table is quite high above sea level, and the angle doesn't show the rocks by the water. I won't say exactly where the place is, but I will say that its east of Helsinki. Don't be fooled; I'm (luckily) not an indigenous Turkuite.;)

This small village is located in the Southern part of Germany.
This is a fairly recent air picture from the village and as I look at the picture I see all the paths which I am so familiar with. The fields are the ones in which I played and worked growing up; the forests full of wild blueberries during the summer months.
A Southern-Confederate friend, who spend many years in Germany in the 60's and 70's once told me: "I look at Deutschland's heritage. I see Deutschland's richness in its culture and in its people. The Land der Dichter und Denker; the cradle of the Reformation; I know how astonishingly fervent German piety can be, how strong and fearless its conscience, how stubborn for the truth, how productive." This is the land of my youth that I remember as well.

This is the country of my ancestors; the home of my father; I speak my mother’s tongue. Deutschland, the country of my ancestors and my birth, will always be a very special place for me. Georgia:)

Here are some pictures from my adopted homeland Georgia. Though I live about 90 miles from Savannah, I have to go there often.
This is the main highway going downtown Savannah. Georgia cities as well as towns are very clean. The area shown in the pictures is already considered downtown. Old oak trees are everywhere.

Two racoons were crossing the road. By time I was able to pull over and get to my camera, they had already climbed a tree. However, I did get this picture as one of them decided to stop and look down at me.

Dublin Bay..

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/academic/languages/gaelic/Dublin-Bay.jpg

Taken from the Howth [rhymes with 'both'], I do believe! Interesting Germanic connection, as its English name comes from the Norse Hofuth, meaning 'Head', or headland, c.f. Old English Heafod. In Irish it's Binn Eadair, or Eadar's Peak. My Uncle Paul was born there, and I was there at the weekend, actually swimming in that water! :)
In the distance you can just make out the Sugar Loaf Mountain [the pointy one], which I'd climbed the day before.

My Dad's lot left that island for the one next door, where you can find such places dear to me as this one - Dovestones Reservoir;

All good fora need on of these threads--so, I'll get the ball rolling. All of these pictures, I took myself and are of the immediate area in which I live.

They're in chronolgical order and we'll start with some winter scenes.

A gloomy and icey New Year's Day, 2007 in the field adjacent to my house:

High atop Garden Hill after a long ski up--looking southeast toward New Hampshire, February, 2007:

Looking back toward my house (not visible) from the ridge on the other side of the valley, February, 2007:

Old abandoned, New England farm house (the family name was Tenny), February, 2007:

Myself skiing along with the faithful hound on a fine, winter's day, March, 2007 (guess I didn't take this one!):

Pastel, evening sky in the field adjacent to my house, March, 2007:

This storm was odd in that the light was very blue. I don't know why though. OK, one more wintery picture for this post--the ridge behind my house, April, 2007:

I live in a smal town near the Swedish capital Stockholm. My town is like a "seaport". I have lived in this wonderful and peacefull city all my life.

This is a photo of a property that belongs to couple who operate a bed & breakfast on their organic farm. Typical of the rolling countryside around here. Those two structures are "Mongolian yurts" which they rent out to paying guests.

I took a photo of this only this morning. I looked out of our rumpus room window for some reason and I noticed this - and laughed my head off.

I took some picture while in my hometown this past weekend. Nothing impressive, I don't think. Mostly houses, some abandoned (?) places, a church, the view over the interstate and some Hispanic eating joint. Oh and a fire station, a gas station (Horn's) and a BBQ joint. Technically it's C's 2.

April is the month of change around here. Winter fades into spring. All that was frozen, thaws, all that was white, becomes green again.

Early April. If one knows where to look, my home is visible in this picture:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3092/2361911198_0f6fa39bc5_b.jpg

Mid April near my house under "bluebird" skies and with a thinning snowpack:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3226/2419651592_caa1298af8_b.jpg

By the end of the month, the snow is gone and the greening of the land has begun:

I thought I would share with you a few images from my hometown of Waco, Texas.

First a few photographs of the typical scenery found in Waco:
(please click on photo for larger image)

These are the Cameron park cliffs overlooking the Brazos River.
My parents house is only a few miles from this location.
I played here when I was a kid, something that would not be safe for a child to do these days.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/3602619072_56bea225ac_b.jpg

Here is another view of the Brazos River and the nineteenth century bridges spanning.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/1118729287_dfff15084c_b.jpg

This is Lake Waco. My childhood home is on the opposite shore.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/15006985_6860f04c28_b.jpg

Now for some photographs of buildings:

Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco and this is the Dr. Pepper museum.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/3051665624_c38e44ca00_b.jpg

http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/93329948_84b8a2c9b8_b.jpg

Baylor University. This is the Burleson Quadrangle.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/2129989151_9802216813_b.jpg

Also at Baylor, this gigantic structure is the new Science Building and cost 100 million dollars to build.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/2782222041_a5c98169d9_o.jpg

The 1898 courthouse.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/512312091_f8a826ef3a_b.jpg

This behemoth is the Grand Lodge of Texas headquarters and located behind the courthouse.
I have always thought it strange that it is not located in a much larger city like Dallas or Houston.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/15717660_5e56d61284_b.jpg

Waco has many mansions. Here are few of them.
http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/Madison_cooper_house_2008.jpg

http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/3121951157_58373c2165_b.jpg

This is the Alico Building. At 21 stories It was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River when it was built in 1910.
As a testament to the structural integrity it withstood a direct hit from an F5 tornado that nearly destroyed downtown Waco and killed 114 people.

http://i539.photobucket.com/albums/ff355/williamofwaco/3164136889_2f5f89ce7c_b.jpg

Here is an image of downtown Waco taken in 1958.

Houston, Texas....
It's a very newly developed city so our oldest things are usually built between the 1950's or 1960's. Not very naturally beautiful- I have to admit.

To be honest, that looks pretty impressive. Modern cities in Britain are a lot uglier (but at least we have historical cities to make up for that).

Some photos I have taken in Suffolk

I took the photos of the poppies today, in a field on the farm where I work.

The horse is a Suffolk Punch, a very rare breed Draught Heavy horse previously used in agriculture.

The cattle are Red Poll, a cross between the now extinct Norfolk Red and Suffolk Dun.

I'll probably post some more soon, Im not the greatest photographer, but I do like to have my camera with me all the time in case something interesting happens. :)

Man, sometimes i get quite jealous of all you guys living in lands with mountains/hills and big forests. I always had something with mountains and then i'm born in a land with none whatsoever :~(

But don't worry, there are also many times i'm very happy to be living in a land that is nice and flat :thumbup

Today i went on a little hiking trip some 30 kilometers away from here in 'Gaasterland' (in the south-east of Frieslân), together with my sister and her boyfriend. I just got my new photo camera, so this was an excellent opportunity to shoot some great scenery. The pictures are in chronological order and i will provide them with commentary :)

We started at a little beach at the southern coast of Fryslân:

http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/8603/dsc0197m.jpg

There was some kiting going on. The weather was fantastic: cold but sunny, with clear skies:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3448/dsc0215zp.jpg

Near the coast:

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/8193/dsc0239uf.jpg

Walking to the entrance of the woods:

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/5959/dsc0249zx.jpg

I love to be here :) There aren't a lot of forests around here anymore, so this is where i go to every now and then:

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/5599/dsc0259nf.jpg

Some more trees:

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/839/dsc0263zk.jpg

This one is old:

http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/5729/dsc0274r.jpg

Closer up:

http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/8454/dsc0276uu.jpg

There is a long straight lane through this forest, nice for picture taking:

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/2860/dsc0298d.jpg

I don't know these people. When i was looking through the viewfinder, they looked like being far away, but when i put my camera down they were quite close already :P They must've been thinking, why is this guy taking a picture of us :P But the resulting picture came out quite good, if i say so myself:

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1139/dsc0315ms.jpg

My sister sitting in front of hotel Gaasterland:

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/3706/dsc0319ws.jpg

The location of the picture above, is the same as this 45 year old picture with our mother in it (the girl on the left). Look at the tree on the right:

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/6166/johannesjansbuwaldaantj.png

Out of the woods again:

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/1034/dsc0324dc.jpg

It's getting visibly later in the afternoon:

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4223/dsc0338er.jpg

The weather really couldn't be any better today :)

http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/806/dsc0339db.jpg

Typical Frisian farms in the background:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8537/dsc0342ic.jpg

No real 'Frisians', these horses ;)

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/6122/dsc0343g.jpg

Around this time, my sister and her boyfriend were annoying as hell, all the time complaining the hiking trip was taking too long. How can being in a place like this, take too long:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/946/dsc0344dq.jpg

You can not really see it that well, but this area is quite hilly (at least, it is for us :P). The hills are a remainder of the last ice-age, when glaciers from up north pushed the hills up:

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2296/dsc0351ni.jpg

Proof this is Frisia :D

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7858/dsc0355ad.jpg

The 'Ijsselmeer' (more like a sea, but not anymore because of the 'afsluitdijk' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afsluitdijk)) in the distance:

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/7495/dsc0357fi.jpg

Many rocks like these are found in this area. They are not native, but the glaciers brought them here in the last ice-age from the area what is now Norway:

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/8984/dsc0358ok.jpg

I was starting to feel my feet around here, but other than that, no complaints!

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/3685/dsc0360lm.jpg

Doesn't this picture makes you want to go back in time and live a simple life in such an environment...:

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/8471/dsc0367te.jpg

:P

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4383/dsc0371iq.jpg

I should've stayed there to be able to take pictures of the sunset... However, i had two whining kids with me... ;)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/6108/dsc0376eb.jpg

Almost there:

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9732/dsc0402f.jpg

Finally, back at my car! It was a tight fit with the three of us, but other than that, it's an allright car...

All of a sudden, this swan started to land in the pond before me. I wanted to focus on the swan, but instead accidentally focused on the reed in the foreground. I think it was for the best, since i really like it :)

New Hampshire and Maine, sparsely populated and very beautiful yet over looked areas in the far north east of the US. My Avatar is from New Hampshire. Practically all White people :thumbup

I live about 5 - 7 hours from NH and ME, but that's not considered very far of a drive over here.

Today I present the "Aletsch Glacier" which is the longest glacier in the Alps (about 23 km long). It is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch protected area situated between the cantons of Bern and Wallis. Quite a popular place for a weekend trip. Also a bit touristic in summer..
