What are people's thoughts on this phenomenon? Is it acceptable and harmless to dabble in a little 'dress up'? Personally I think it's totally fine, as long as it does not take the place of your own nation's costume too often. It is a fun gesture for special occasions.
Here is an example of a European woman in non European style clothing:

Thoughts?

Too much pink there, but in general I think it's fine as long as it doesn't look retarded.

What in your opinion would make it look 'retarded'? :D

I'm talking feather headresses, face paint, clothes that look like a sack with a hole in it, and weird shapes in clothing that have nothing to do with the body inside it. Like this: http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1104/974577259_7ec41bd598_z.jpg for example. I think dressing up like that, while morally irrelevant, is a crime against fashion and basic human aesthetic.

Well, yes, this kind of style is so outlandish that it is truly bizarre for a Westerner to adopt it. It is usually done for attention seeking reasons (on the red carpet maybe). I therefore disapprove of it for being narcissistic. The outfit in the picture I posted however may be visually pleasing to the Western eye, and it does not stick out in a vulgar or distracting way. I cannot think of any African style that would look good on a White person, to be honest. But traditional Indian and Chinese styles can be quite pleasant.

I agree, just not in hot pink and teal.

I think this is slightly more glitzy than you would find on normal Indian women anyway, so there is still an element of the Western need to jazz things up - which is possibly an attention seeking behavior which afflicts us all. But this is something we may not be able to get rid of, only keep in check nowadays.
