Me and the wife bought and old run down house in a small town which we are busy restoring. My wife were taking some 'before' photos of the house when she took this picture yesterday. There is currently no electrical lights in the house as all the wiring and electrical fittings were stolen from the house, it was already starting to turn to dusk and it was rainy and overcast outside. It was taken with a HTC smartphone.

I have to admit that it does look unusual. I've never had a camera that captured such an image before in similar conditions you have described.

The best I can recommend is that you post it on a forum that specializes in the paranormal. Many of its members describe themselves as "ghost hunters" and they take hundreds of photographs for the specific purpose of capturing a possible entity. They may be able to tell you if the unusual form in your photograph is a typical occurrence with some cameras, or they may be just as baffled as you are. If it is the latter then I can assure you it will occupy much of their time trying to figure out exactly what it is. :D

Here are a few places I frequent from time to time that may give you some help:

Thank you for your reply Wulfram, I will follow the links! Have any other members got an opinion on this photo? I can honestly rule out lens flare as a friend suggested as there were no external light sources present.

You just rule out the mundane causes one by one and if you don't find an explanation, it's considered paranormal.

She did use a flash, right? It looks like the outer edge of a palm and the tip of a bent-down pinkie finger. I've managed to get my thumb into pics and have it come out looking like that. It would just depend how she was holding the camera.
