Because of all the millions of people who've died in human history, it just so happens that it's the ghosts of famous people who mostly get spotted.

Commercially minded, people care more about those kind of sightings then about stories of someone seeing a ghost of unknown person. It is about what creates more publicity for said researcher.

Precisely. The old Ryman Auditorium is said to be haunted by the ghost of Hank Williams Sr., at least that's who people have claimed to see there, but ol' Hank was kicked out of the Opry and I can't imagine his ghost hanging around. If there's anybody haunting the Ryman at all, wouldn't it be a janitor or someone else who was there for years and attached to the place? Follow the money...tourist dollars.
