POLICE fear an Indian cartoon depicting a Victoria Police officer in Ku Klux Klan garb could inflame racial tensions.

Political leaders say the cartoon, published in Delhi's Mail Today, is "disgusting".

Indian students say they don't condone the cartoon, but believe police need to use more sensitivity when dealing with attacks on Indians.

The cartoon follows the death of Indian Nitin Garg, who was stabbed last weekend while walking to work in West Footscray.

Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland said the facts showed that Indians were safer here than in India.
"There are over 33,000 murders in India every year; 8000 of those are actually brides being killed because the dowry's not sufficient," he said.

Police union boss Greg Davies said the cartoon could stir up racial hatred in an already volatile situation.

"Clearly (police) are not happy about it, they are quite offended (but) if a police officer dropped their bundle every time they were insulted we would never get anything done," Sen-Sgt Davies said.

Police Minister Bob Cameron said he was shocked by the image, which was as wrong as it was offensive.

"Victoria Police is an open and tolerant organisation," Mr Cameron said. "It will investigate any crime in a professional way."

Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the cartoon was "deeply, deeply offensive" to the Victoria police.

"A number of the places that are being talked about publicly are in Melbourne's west and they're very close to where I live," Ms Gillard said.

"I'm very familiar personally with the police officers who police those areas. They have indeed worked in close collaboration with representatives of the Indian community."

There are concerns the escalating tension will damage Australia's lucrative education sector; Indian students contributed $2.8 billion to the economy last year.

Federation of Indian Students Australia spokesman Gautam Gupta said police should release statistics on the proportion of Indian students attacked in Victoria to promote disclosure and overcome the hysteria.

That is kinda the ironic bit in this story after viewing the cartoon. It tells us how truly violent, weird, and sadistic Indian society is, and there doesn't seem to be anyone who wants to stop them.

The Aussies police are only trying their best to cover and look into all those thousands of Indian brides being sniped out and all the other crimes and daily catastrophes that can happen there(aren't we taking about brush fire country here.)

Oh sure it has to be Mr. Aussie Troopers fault that the murder wasn't solved just yet:thumbdown ungrateful invading wogs.

The whole Hindu culture is about race, a negro would be in hell if he lived in India so what are they talking about, and ask them if they like Pakistan.

Bah, hypocrisy.
