Yeah your spine is less compressed so you are taller in the mornining. That's also the reason people shrink with old age the cartilage between their spinal discs wears as a result they "shrink".

That site is a bit out of date....

There's no way Germans are less than 175cm on average these days...

Here are some more stats...

In 1986, the average Polish recruit measured 175.2cm

...176.89cm in 1991

...177.8cm in 2002.

Compare this to other countries...

Portugal 172.13cm (1996)
Bulgaria 173.6cm (1998)
Spain 173.8cm (1998)
France 174.9cm (1993)
England 175.7cm (1985)
Belgium 176.8cm (1993)
Greece 177.6cm (1995)
Austria 177.1cm (1995)
Hungary 178.5cm (1997)
Czech Republic 178.84cm (1998)
Sweden 179.5cm (1999)
Holland 184cm (2000)

Some interesting points raised...

-Poles from the highest socio-economic groups are on average over 180cm.

-Polish average stature is still increasing, while Scandinavians seem to have stopped getting taller.

-The most important factors seem to be genetics, the mother's education level and affluence.

-The countries with the most socio-economically even societies (like Scandinavia) are also some of the tallest on average.

-Nations where milk and dairy products are consumed en masse are also tall.

-Lithuanians are on average over 180cm, but I can't find any more details than that here.

I've heard something similar months ago : in some cases, the growth isn't permanently lost, rather postponed to a later time.........perhaps in the next 5-10 years you could gain 5-7 cm.

5' 11" -- 6' 0" depending on my state of mind, posture, sleep, etc. ;)

6'1" when I was 20. I probably 6'0" or just a fraction of an inch under 6 feet now. As you get older, in addition to thinning hair, you also get shorter.

How I sympathise! I always thought I was six foot, until my brother measured me again a year or so ago, and ended up with 5'11''. I still tell people I'm six foot, but have no plans to measure myself again soon! :p

Tall men make more money & are more likely to be in positions of authority. I noticed this when I was a kid. I think there have been studies to back this up.

Tall men with broad shoulders look very masculant.

What I do not understand is the misuse of decimals when stating human height in centimeters. Being 1.77 centimeters, rather than 1.77 meters, means that one would be little over half an inch tall, which is obviously impossible. Why this common error? :033102st:

Napoleon would object.

It's only indirectly connected to height in my opinion but rather to self-confidence. Tall men are more likely to feel self-confident due to an archaic comparison with other people based on your own body but if small people have talents outweighing this archaic comparison like Napoleon or Goebbels had they can appear just as self-confident and eventually become even more successful.

You can't destroy a rule with an exception. Besides, Napoleon wasn't that small, pretty much french average.

What do you mean with "only"? Obviously it is just a correlation, or else Napoleon really would disprove the premise.

After the famous general and emperor died in 1821, his body was autopsied in France, and his height was noted as 5 foot 2 inches. This measurement was in French feet (pieds de roi) and was never correctly converted to standard English measure. In English feet, Napoleon stood 5 foot 6.5 inches tall. So the poor guy was shorted a full 4.5 inches in height.

In his day, 5'6.5" was a perfectly respectable, nothing-to-be-ashamed-of height for a man. In fact, Napoleon was actually slightly taller than the average Frenchman of 1800.
http://ask.yahoo.com/20030724.html

He was around 168cm.

The first sentence was merely a joke.

About Napoleon's height - there's disagreement between historians whether the inches were French inches or British ones because the measurement of his corpse happened under British control.

Except 177 centimeters already means one meter plus 77 centimeters. I don't then see a point in writing 1,77/1.77 cm instead of correctly writing 1,77/1.77 m in terms of human height. :nono0000:

Funny thing about height, I am 188cm, supposedly tall, but I never go around perceiving myself as if. The only time I do perceive my height is when standing next to a taller man (even a little bit taller). It doesn’t give me some kind of inferior complex. It makes me slightly pissed off.

I'm a bit under 5'9.

And if you don't understand Imperial here's my (estimated) height in metres:
1.73-1.74

My height maybe something to do with my mix of English, Irish and Welsh blood. The Welsh are not typically tall like Nordics/Germanics, there are Welsh people who barely reach 5 foot. My mum's dad's family comes from Abergavenny in South Wales and neither my grandad or my mum are 6 foot or over, theyre about my height. Though my grandad may be pushing into 5 foot 9 1/2 inch at most

EDIT: Huh? According to wikipaedia the average Welsh male height is 5 feet 9 1/2 inches, that around 1/2 inch taller than we English!

Of course the English have never been particularly famous for being tall!

ha, your not the only one! Here was I thinking I was quite tall at 5'9" and then it turns out Im definetly not tall for a Germanic! I mean there are women on here who at over 6 foot who would be pretty darn tall if stood next to me, and here was me thinking men are taller than women! It seems that so many men are well into 6 foot, including one who is 6' 7" (which is around 2 metres for those that use that horrible metric system I can barely understand)!

So Ive concluded that Im a little bit shorter than the average Germanic man, but Im about right for the average woman height!
