Right of asylum (or political asylum) is an ancient judicial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judicial) notion, under which a person persecuted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution) for political opinions or religious beliefs in his or her own country may be protected by another sovereign authority (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereignty), a foreign country, or Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Church) sanctuaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctuary) (as in medieval times).

What do you believe the laws on political asylum should be? Who should ideally be granted political asylum by your country and under which circumstances? Please discuss.

I think under certain circumstances that it should be granted but it is over used in the United States. To me it seems like we adopt every refugee that wants to come in.

It should only be used in special circumstances, for people who have helped our country's interests, for example a former spy or a politician who faces persecution for interests beneficial to us.

That's only for foreign peoples quite different from ours, I think other northern European peoples should be able to come here with minimal restrictions.

I agree! People from countries like German and England can obtain a visa easily here. One doesn't even need a passport to cross into the Canadian border and vice versa.
