View Full Version : If You Could Be Any Animal...

The Horned God
Tuesday, April 18th, 2006, 03:26 AM
If you could be an animal which animal would be, including ones which are now extinct?!

I'll get the ball rolling. I think i would not have minded living on the Russian steppe as a Woolly Mammoth during one of the inter-glacial periods around half a million years ago, before humans came along and made them extinct.

Attributes I might have enjoyed include, colossal size and strength, long life-span 60 odd years (far more than more humans at the time) , relative high intelligence, close-nit family group, no natural predators and not having to hunt for my food but merely stretch out my trunk.
All in all a pretty good deal I reckon! ;)

I like being a human (out of the options available at least). But if one had to choose another animal, I would be an eagle.

I would like to be a dolphin in a bay near ancient Greece where I could play around the bows of Dionysus's ship and be laughed with and swum with and portrayed on lovely vases from the Aegean lands where dolphins and men were brothers.

Hmm, though question.
There's so many amazing animals out there!
But I would like to be a bear, I think.
Yeah, a bear sound good :) (Except the part of being hunted, and let those filthy homo sapiens kill you and take your skin!)

Hmm If I was to be any animal it would be a Bison or Buffolo. I love those animals so much. The sheer size and power of the animal is amazing. I've got plenty of toy bison things. From stuffed animals to plastic toys. I guess you could say I'm a little obsessed with the animal ;)

Ah, so many to chose from! A big cat of some sort (a northern variety), I have always had an affinity for big cats, or a wolf (when they were plentiful), or a bird of prey, or a swan.

I say an Alaskan mountain goat.

They get the best views, they are way up high above the bears, wolves, and human hunters. They are totally sure-footed and aren't afraid of heights or falling at all. They also would rather swan-dive to their doom than be captured by hunters, there is just something romantic about that :D.

If you were a mountain goat you would say things like "Hey, kids, look down at all those clouds!"

Dire Wolf. Now long extinct. Ferocious, fearless beast that roamed when the sabertooth tiger did and would often engage in battle with the much larger and stronger and well equipped sabertooth. Much bigger than the wolves of this age.

Well, I'm European, and I'm a natural born leader, so in that case, so if I was an animal, I'd be a wolf. Strong willed, independent. Just like me.

Additionaly I feel as if I'm acclimated to arctic conditions. I would much rather be out in the cold, arctic air where a wolf lives than sweltering heat anyday. If I get too hot, I can get really "wolfy".

I also noticed it seems quite a few of us here say they also would be wolves. Spirit of the pack!

This is easy...

A wolf - they have been my favorite animal all my life.

Had a good friend from Oklahoma whose grandfather was a Cherokee Medicine Man and he told me that the Wolf Spirit is both my guide and guardian. This is very interesting because the old man had no idea how I have always had this "connection" with wolves.

I truly believe there is something "primitive" at work here and warrants further investigation.

Glaucus atlanticus (common names sea swallow, blue glaucus, blue sea slug and blue ocean slug) is a species of medium-sized blue sea slug, a pelagic aeolid nudibranch, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Glaucidae.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/21/Glaucus_atlanticus_1_cropped.jpg/618px-Glaucus_atlanticus_1_cropped.jpg

G. atlanticus preys on other larger pelagic organisms: the dangerously venomous Portuguese Man o' War Physalia physalis; the by-the-wind-sailor Velella velella; the blue button Porpita porpita; and the violet snail, Janthina janthina. Occasionally, individual Glaucus become cannibals given the opportunity.

G. atlanticus is able to feed on P. physalis due to its immunity to the venomous nematocysts. The slug consumes the entire organism and appears to select and store the most venomous nematocysts for its own use. The venom is collected in specialized sacs (cnidosacs), on the tip of their cerata, the thin feather-like "fingers" on its body.[5] Because Glaucus stores the venom, it can produce a more powerful and deadly sting than the Man o' War upon which it feeds.

Is that so strange? We're Germanics, after all! :D
Yeah, I know, the wolf is probably not an especially original choice on a forum like this, but I didn't personally choose it because I wanted to be "badass", but because it's the truth that I've felt a bond to this animal for as long as I can remember. They're very special to me, and always will be. :)

I'll add one more: what about living as a wild, untamed horse? Perhaps a Przewalski:

No, the opposite. Just because we're Germanix, doesn't mean one has to choose from a repertoire of animals associated with having some sort of warrior-esque asatru hypernordic standpoint. I'm not calling you or anyone out on it, that's fine. I just find the whole deal a bit tasteless.

I would be a crab. You get to just hang out at the beach all day, pinching people's toes and stuff, haha. And I think the way some of them move is hilarious. :D
You're easy pray. You'll get consumed by other animals and sea creatures and fished out and consumed by humans :p

Quote- Haha funny thread. I would be a Megalodon. This shark is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history. Fossil remains indicate that this giant shark reached a total length of more than 16 metres and also affirm that it had a cosmopolitan distribution. End quote

Funny you should mention the Megalodon. I was recently watching scenes from a German film called Hai-Alarm auf Mallorca! which is all about a Megalodon terrorising sun-seeking tourists off, you guessed it, Mallorca, or Majorca.

Here's a link to it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m-x1qAl8OY

The Megalodon was tons of frisky fun.

I apologize for assuming anything. Its just weird hearing the same statement twice in one week. My bad.

I doubt that you find being a man very different from being a woman. The differences are minor.

Either a liger for their skills in magic, a honey badger for their fearlessness, a polar bear for being big, white, and awesome, or a koala so I can make sounds like you hear from 50 seconds onward in this video:

I'm trying to avoid the cliched wolf (i prefer dogs anyway), it'd be easy to say a cat too, but then part of me wants to be something really awful, so I could choose anything from snakes and spiders, to a pubic louse lol!. I'd probably out of git-like animals be a 'sky-bastard' (seagull) and spend my days stealing chips, pooping on people and randomly squawking at crap.

Without hesitation, an eagle. Not only I love birds and find them incredibly beautiful but it would be awesome to be master of the sky. I could travel far away above forests, rivers and mountains avoiding all these terrestrial obstacles and predators. I wouldn’t mind if you were all megalodons, polar bears, wolves and wolverines guys :P They fly mostly alone and have one love in their life, quite compatible with my mentality. In addition, I like fish and would enjoy fishing in the nearby lake or river. Osprey and owl would be acceptable alternatives. Osprey for fishing, and owl for gliding silently in the night.

Something small, a small bird. Smaller animals have more muscular strength in relation to body weight than do larger and small birds have more wing area in relation to body weight than do larger birds.

A small bird can do aerobatics that an eagle just cannot fathom. Just look at the little things flying through hedges and up underneath roofs. :)

My father was shown on his last day of work by a flight of ravens. They stood on the ground next to his car talking to each other and watched him go. Interestingly enough there is some thought that Ravens are special birds but not fit to eat biblically.

English translation
The Raven's SongVersions: #1 (https://lyricstranslate.com/en/krummav%C3%ADsur-ravens-song.html-0#songtranslation)#2
The raven slept in a rock-rift
On a cold winters night
There are many things that can hurt him
Many things that can hurt him
Before a beautiful day came
He pulls his frozen nose
From underneath a big rock
Underneath a big rock

The raven slept in a rock-rift
The raven slept in a rock-rift

Everything is frozen outside
You can't get anything at the beach
I'm so hungry
I'm so hungry
If I go to a house
Fat1 (https://lyricstranslate.com/en/krummavisur-ravens-song.html#footnote1_727npap), at home, forbids me
To pluck from the garbage
To pluck from the garbage

The raven slept in a rock-rift
The raven slept in a rock-rift

The earth is covered in ice
There is nowhere to "set the table" (to sit and eat)
Full-fledged birds can fly far.
Full-fledged birds can fly far.
But even though I look everywhere
There's just one color
What can a raven eat
What can a raven eat?

Side by sie ... I was impressed at how similar many things in English were to these Icelandic words

I don't think ants really "follow" as in 'obey orders from an central authority'. I think that ant colonies basically act collectively but as far as what I've read, the queen actually makes eggs and doesn't actually tell anyone what to do :-D

The ant is an interesting choice ... I personally might get a bit creeped out in those narrow crowded tunnels in the dark with all those ant antennae touching me - I guess if I was an ant, I might not mind it though hehe.

His/her (?) name was "croucrou". I raised him in a cage after falling out of a nest, then released him and helped him start flying. He came back for almost 3 years and slept every night under the eaves in our front porch. He walked with me like a dog and even took rides with me on the ATV. Then some day he came back with a companion, I guess he found out who he really was, but kept his distance from thereon.
