Kgalema Motlanthe is president

ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe was duly elected in the National Assembly as South Africa’s next President to replace Thabo Mbeki, who resigned after being "recalled" by the party.

Motlanthe garnered 269 votes against the 50 votes cast for the only other nominee, Democratic Alliance chairman Joe Seremane.

There were 41 spoilt ballots.

Earlier today, the Independent Democrats indicated the party’s four MPs in the House would abstain from voting.

The results were announced by Chief Justice Pius Langa, who will preside over Motlanthe’s swearing-in ceremony at Tuynhuys, adjacent to Parliament, later on this afternoon.

Naming of a new deputy president to replace outgoing deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and the new Cabinet, is expected to follow.
