''''A site on the worldwide distribution of particular surnames which has been compiled by researchers from the University College London (UCL) using publically available sources of information such as electoral registers and telephone directories. It contains information on over 300 million names covering 26 nations from Europe, America, Asia and Oceania. Users may type in their surname to view visual mappings and statistics on its distribution worldwide. Technical and methodological information is displayed on the website. It would be of particular value to family historians and researchers of migration history as well as human geographers.''

It's a bit disconcerting to see such a dominance in Tasmania. Perhaps it was my namesakes which helped kill off the Tasmanians? :D (http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=97146)

There are a lot of people with my surname in Ireland, but my surname is English (possibly German) in origin and the concentration is most in Northern Ireland.

I see I have a high concentration of long-lost cousins in Gisborne Region, New Zealand. There are more in Tasmania than in my ancestors' beachhead in Connecticut. They have not dispersed much in England from the Bristol area.

I tried a few of my other genealogical lines and found few surprises except for that of my German great-grandmother. Hers have not been traced as it is a fairly common name, but this website shows a strong concentration in Bamberg, Germany. Cool! I've got it targeted for my next trip back.

I often get asked if I'm from Louisiana, if I have family in Louisiana, if I'm related to someone they know from Louisiana with the same surname, and someone mistook me for a local while I was in Louisiana. Figures. My great-great grandpappy was a Frenchman from Louisiana :)

My surname is very rare outside of the UK, when my dad and brother moved to Montana, it made that state the most per million in the US at 6. I've never actually met anyone not a relative with my surname, though I've heard that there is another family in my area.

Everyone in the US with this last name is related...... and we suspect that the name was changed when the ancestors came to the US, which is why it is not found anywhere outside of the US. It is German, but we have no idea what the original spelling may have been, or what it may have been derived from.)

My Surname is Smith (track me down, I dare ya :P), so that didn't turn up much useful information.
Therefore the list below is what was returned for McGowan, which is the English spelling of the Irish name for Smith, and is I think a better general indicator or where my consanguinous group can be found today, than Smith would be.

I'm curious about the general predominance of English and Germanic surnames in Australia and New Zealand. I guess it either shows that fewer European surnames travelled to Australasia, or that there is an overwhelmingly larger foreign presence in Britain and much of Europe.

Dad's (mine) isn't in there, but it too is Scandinavian. The machine is too Anglicised: I removed a couple of letters and it became (largely) Australian and British; I put one back in, and the name was (largely) German.:D

Actually, I'd be willing to bet that Ulf's paternal Grandmother's maiden name (whatever it may be) is probably a very Anglicised version of a relatively more common German surname. That's why it shows up mostly in the US and then at a very low frequency. Pennsylvania Dutch surnames will do that. That would be my guess.

I'll throw it out here to see if anyone knows anything about it, I've found very sparse information about it. My paternal grandmother's maiden name is Muthard.

My great maternal grandmother's maiden name is Eisenhard, which also turns up almost nothing but a lot more turns up with the spelling Eisenhardt.

"Mut" is German for "Courage" and "hard" is German for..."hard" of course.

So the name probably means something like "Of strong courage". But that's just my guess. I'll check it out and see if I find anything about it.

I believe this is most likely your immigrant ancestor. He seems to be the only PA Dutch Muthard immigrant.

Name: Johann Frederick Muthard
Sex: M
Birth: NOV 1708 in Neckargartach, Wuerttemberg, Germany
Death: 1769 in New Hanover Township, Montgomery County, PA
Immigration: 31 OCT 1737 Ship "William" , Philadelphia
Note:
Arrived in America on the Ship "William", John Carter, Master, from Rotterdam, last from Dover - 180 passengers. October 31, 1737

Johan Fried. Muthhardt

Father: Johann Christoph Muthart b: ABT 1685 in Neckargartach, Neckarkreis, Wuerttemberg, Germany
Mother: Maria Barbara Kudter b: 10 FEB 1684/85 in Germany

Marriage 1 Magdalena Barbara b: ABT 1714 in Neckargartach, Wuerttemberg, Germany
Married: ABT 1731 in Germany
Children
Sophia Muthart b: ABT 1732 in Gumbrechtshoffen, Bas Rhin., Alsace, France

No problem. People seem to underestimate http://www.rootsweb.com . That's where I found the information. Go to the site and on the home page in the left column there will be "Search Family Trees". Click on that and away you go. There are other helpful options there as well. I bet you could find most of your genealogy on that site alone especially if it's all PA Dutch. See, most Old Stock families already have their family trees discovered it just took the beauty of the internet to be able to combine everyone's existing knowledge into an easily accessible database.

Another good site is http://www.ancestry.com . That site has the added feature of really good research tools like censuses and all sorts of documentation. It does cost some money though. I had it a while back and then I must have never cancelled my subscription because I can still use the site. I don't mind giving them money at all though. If it helps people find their ancestors who are truly interested in their family ancestry then I am happy to support such a project, especially since with the money the site can get more and more additional archives and information, etc. Plus, the vast majority of people doing this sort of research are going to be Old Stock Americans like ourselves which only furthers our cause. Hey, so I guess that's my little contribution to Germanic Preservation.

I have tried looking up what my mother's maiden name may have been before they came to the U.S. I found one website that boasted to have all the cognates listed for the name..... and so I tried all 14 of them into the website link in this thread.......

Only 2 of the 14 had anything other than U.S. (and all the U.S. ones were very low as well):

One variation of the surname came up:

United States 7.86
Germany .07

Another came up:

United States 2.41
Germany .04

Well it's good to comfirm that my paternal family is still Norwegian and Scottish :D

The maternal side scored heavily on German and Austria. I scored two surnames (out of the 8 I tried) in Poland. Mostly in Southern and South-East Poland.
Though I am not a Polish and there is a severe dislike in my family against Poles and Russians. My maternal family is mostly Austrian (two Great Grandmothers having Austrian surnames for instance) and Ruthenian-Galician (not to be confused with a province in Spain).

If you're an american citizen, such as myself, remember that if your ancestors came to this country 200 years ago, it's most likely that they changed their surnames to sound more "english." I.E. Pollman- pullman. Or the umlauts were removed and no e was added-- i.e. galer instead of gaeler. But I have to admit... This is an amazing tool! Thanks for posting such a great find.

Small world: My paternal grandmother was a McGowan and was born in Liverpool but emigrated to Canada during the early 1910's. She and some of her sibs came over and worked on a farm in Madawaska in the Upper Ottawa Valley. She came here at the tender age of 13 and was never to visit her beloved parents nor older sibs ever again. Sad when you think about it.

Well not surprisingly there's a significant concentration in Lower Normandy of course. My ancestor was born in St-Germain-le-Vasson, Bayeux, Normandie. But I was surprised to see so many of my 'distant relations' living in Upper New England as opposed to the Province of Quebec. But then again New Hampshire and Maine are so very similar to Quebec it is not very surprising. And yet none are noted for the Province of Ontario. For my surname, it is most commonly found in Wytheville, Virginia. The ratings for the name spelled with an "e" are
US 9.97
Slovenia 8.7
Germany 0.11
UK 0.04

A close variation spelled with an "a" rates as
US 5.76
Germany 0.04

The Swiss root name rates as
Switz 3.19
Sweden (not sure related) 2.53
Germany 0.72
US 0.35

There is another variation with an "h", but I cannot prove it is related. When people change the spelling of their name it complicates tracing.
Austria 6.75
US 0.9

For my mother's surname it is said to be Baltic Estonian. For some reason Finland is missing from the ratings. It is most commonly found in Vermont, and Finnmark, Norway.
Sweden 32.86
US 15
Norway 4.81
Hungary 3.54

Anyone know anything about this surname? My girlfriend's one PA Dutch line is "Lavenburg" but was originally "Loewenberg". It sounded really jewish to me at first, but I don't think many Jews came with the PA Dutch in the 1700's. I remember I googled it up at the time with the spelling "Lavenburg" or "Labenberg" and not many results came but those that did seemed like they were Jewish. So is it more likely to be Jewish or just some Rheinlander with the name "Lion Mountain"?

OK, I'll leave the surname questions at that for now.

Well, I checked the Geogen (http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/en/) page for Loewenberg, and it is a little spread out in Germany, so well - despite what I thought, it might well be a Jewish name.

But you said it is just one line, right? That could be any line, and the Jewish ancestor could be anywhere. If you don't find him in the first ten generations, well, I wouldn't worry too much, really. In fact, even if you fail to find him in the first five generations I wouldn't worry: If you find it in the 5th generation upwards from her we are talking about 1/32 --- more than most people's cut off will be. At that stage, even a 1/32 Negro would be out of the genepool of her, so no chance of non-Germanic genes being passed on to your little 'uns. And when she marries you, your children would be 1/64, but most importantly, wouldn't carry a supposedly Jewish name around.

Give you an example there: One of my exes had a Polish surname, so I quizzed here about that before we got together. Truth revealed, it turned out that she was only 1/16 Polish (i.e. her great-great-grandfather) but that the name had carried on through the paternal line. Evidently, it must have been some Prussian Polish worker in the 1800s that ended up in the Ruhr area, for that's where her father was from. Well, what can you do? ;)

Well, Frederick Loewenberg is her earliest known Lavenburg ancestor and if he were to be 100% straight out of the Levant Jewish that would make her 1/256th jewish.

Frederick was the first European to make a home in the Catawissa Valley in Pennsylvania and where he settled eventually became a place called Ringtown. He also fought in the War of 1812, apparently. He came to America sometime before 1800, maybe after the Revolution maybe before I can't tell. But his first kid was born in America before 1800.

From the surname distribution info I posted it looks like its most common in the Rheinland-Palatinate, which is not surprising for PA Dutch. I'll have to check out your link though.

I attached a picture of his gravestone that I just found while looking up more info about him.

He married a girl with the surname Minnich. Any ideas about that name?

Sigurd

I'll have to check out your link though.

Don't forget that it is a German page and try Löwenberg, too. The "oe" transcription only renders 21 results, the "ö" transcription 168. The latter actually makes it less likely to be a Jewish name. There are a few regional concentrations. :)

He married a girl with the surname Minnich. Any ideas about that name?

None except that the link I posted renders pretty much the same distribution pattern as Löwenberg: Both are most commonly found in the Saale-Orla-Kreis district in Southern Thuringia, and the areas in Rhineland-Palatine where they appear are also almost identical. This even goes for most of the other German areas.

Are you sure he married her across the pond and not before he left Germany? :D

Are you sure he married her across the pond and not before he left Germany? :D

Yeah, he definitely married her in Germany and I am fairly certain that they did come from Rhineland-Palatinate.

For the name Loewenberg there is a nice little concentration in Donnersberg-Kreis, Rheinland-Pfalz. But you're right it gets much more spread out when you enter Löwenberg. I guess there are about 3 or 4 concentrations then. The rheinland-pfalz one, a Thuringen one, one in Brandenburg and then a bunch of random northern areas.

How would a German acquire a name like Löwenberg anyhow? Is there a Löwenberg anywhere in Germany making it a locational name?

Old Fritz

There is a Löwenberg, Germany just north of Berlin a ways. Found it on Google Earth.

Soten

I also found that there must be a Loewenberg in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Löwenberg (Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)

Löwenberg (Löwenburg), was a government district (Amt) of the former grand duchy of Berg, in the Siebengebirge, Rhineland-Westphalia, Germany. In the 16th century and the first half of the 17th numerous Anabaptists were living here. In 1564 the duke gave orders to keep a close watch for Anabaptists and rebaptized persons, and to hunt them up in the woods, ravines, heaths, and similar lonely places. In 1565 the pastor of Honnef denied that he was a follower of the Anabaptists; he had, on the contrary, converted a number of those who had followed after the Anabaptists for one to six years. On 26 November 1565, Konrad Koch was beheaded in Honnef. On 1 May 1591 the Concept of Cologne was signed for the Löwenberg congregation by "Jan Koch, on behalf of the church in Hauffen (i.e., Honnef) and Caspar of Dollendorf." On 9 April 1619, a decree was issued by the Count Palatine that he, the count, perceived with displeasure that the Anabaptists were greatly increasing in the Löwenberg district and were secretly meeting. All the Anabaptists caught at such meetings were to be punished. Following new decrees by the government against the Anabaptists, lists of the Anabaptists were turned in to the authorities. On 30 December 1652 the decree was issued that the Anabaptists who were carrying on important trade or possessed considerable estates were to leave the country within two years; those who had no possessions, within six months. From the Löwenberg area some went to the gravure of Wied, south of the Siebengebirge, in 1654-1656, and became the founders of the Neuwied Mennonite congregation. Others (especially the Schumacher family) went to the Palatinate around Kriegsheim, from where they later emigrated to the United States. The later fate of most of the Anabaptists of the Löwenberg area has not yet been investigated. The last information about the Mennonites in this area is a report of 1670 that the Mennonites had all left the country, but were still owners of estates.

The above is especially important because it says many from this town moved to Rheinland-Palatinate for religious reasons, which is where the PA Dutch mostly come from.

From the same Anabaptist Encyclopedia site:

Löwenberg, Michael (1821-1874)

Michael Löwenberg, preacher of the Mennonite church at Weierhof, Palatinate, Germany, founder of the Realschule at Weierhof, b. 8 November 1821, at Weierhof, d. there 13 December 1874. He married the widow of Johannes Dahlem in 1848. Löwenberg received his training at the normal school in Beuggen. In 1848 he opened a private elementary school at Weierhof. In 1849 he was called to the ministry of the congregation there, serving until his death in 1874. In 1868 he published in the Mennonitische Blätter an appeal to "the Mennonites in Germany, South Russia, and Holland" to establish a Christian school, the principal purpose of which would be to train preachers. On 2 December 1867 the school was opened on a modest scale, and under the direction of Ernst Göbel it became the largest private school in the Palatinate. (See Real-Anstalt am Donnersberg.) It was first located in the Weberhäuschen, which had been built in 1810 by the original Johannes Löwenberg. One of Michael's sons, Thomas (1849-1928), was pastor of the Weierhof congregation 1873-1882, and 1882-1917 pastor at Ibersheim.
So there is the last name Loewenberg!

Aha! And here is the ship passenger list that carried Herr Loewenberg. Now if I could only find from what area these Germans were from I may be on to something.

At the Court House, Philadelphia, 31st October, 1774.

Present: Peter Miller, Esquire

The Foreigners whose Names are underwritten, imported in the Ship Sally, John Osmond, Master, from Rotterdam but last from Cowes, did this day take and subscribe the foregoing Oaths and Declarations in the usual form. Consigned to Samuel Howell. 52 in the list (paid 3.18.0 pounds.)

So I think Herr Friederich Loewenberg was an Anabaptist or Mennonite (is there really a difference?) of either Rheinland-Pfalz or Nordrhein-Westfalen German ancestry.

And now my hubby's surname...We know that his ggf came from Germany via England but we don't know if he actually lived in England or not. Haven't done much genealogical work yet. We also know that the family name has been anglicised over time: the 'e' ending was dropped by some it appears. Either this was intentional (a way to anglicise it and thus blend in more) or it was unintentional (an administrative error). We just don't know. However interesting results occur when we look at both spelling variations.

1. With the 'e':

It is interesting to see a significant number of people who are located in the Franche-Comté department in France. I'm wondering what could have accounted for that kind of a move???? But with the 'e', hubby's surname is definitely German.

2. Without the 'e' ending (anglicised):

And this is where knowing one's ancestors' points of origin become very very useful. In the anglicised version of my hubby's name, one is led to believe that it is a Swedish surname, which in the end would give a very very false reading as to the origins of my father in-law's kinfolk. As another commenter posted, it is good to be aware of any 'refashioning' of a name.

And now my mother in-law's surname:

All the New England towns mentioned here are old mill towns. And yes, during the later 1800s and earlier 1900s there was a significant influx of Quebecois into the mill towns of northern New England.....who of course went to work in the textile mills. :)

I grew up with several Martells, Guerins, Garrons, etc....

However, I wonder how much of the result is diluted or skewed as people from other cultures assume surnames not of their ethnic origins?

The surname I take from my father's side is an extremely strange variation of Schneider, so it was not found anywhere except the US and in very low percentage. But the results for my mother's surname (Rauch) were better.

Perhaps the results are a measure of English influence in foreign lands? However, most Americans with my surname are Negroes (according to Facebook). Either black people think it sounds cool, or my great-great-great uncles and aunts owned a lot of slaves.

The United Kingdom has by far the highest FPM, and within the United Kingdom the region with the highest FPM is Yorkshire and Humberside. I was born in Yorkshire.

Too easy. I don't think anyone needs to actually look that one up. There aren't exactly very many famous American authors born in 1899 with those forenames. I'm not going to state the dead obvious thus, because it really is one of the names that automatically comes up when even a layman is asked to name three classic American authors. ;)

I think this may be confirmation of my own research into the changing of the family name during WWI. The top result for cities is the place I was actually born (no longer there) and where all of my known relatives were born and raised (no worries on loss of anonymity, as my surname is something like the second most popular in town, ha ha. We're a prolific bunch.) I think its brilliant that I might have distant relations in Norway and New-Zealand, since I figured Switzerland and Poland would have a few.

Very interesting.

I already know a fair bit about my family history.
My Dads Father's family were from Dingwall originally (despite what the interwebs say. We are NOT English!). Dingwall was a Viking landing spot, and the first recorded Young came from there. He was Norse.
My Dads Mums family originated from Donegal in Ireland. They were thrown out of Ireland for stealing sheep xD
Now, I don't know my biological Mothers parents names, but from what I know from the map, her family originated from the Shetland Islands.

I'd be interested in seeing a list of extinct or endangered names by ethnicity. If such a list existed it might prod some of the people on the list to take an interest in preserving their line and procreating.
I was shocked when I realized that my son was the only male decendant of my great grandfather who immegrated to America from Germany, and whom my family generally considers the founder of our clan. It caused me to convince my brother to have another child. Though there are still plenty of people left in Germany with my surname, there must be people out there who can't take such consolation.

Yes, I have both surnames solidly formed by English family practice.... although many Gaelic cousins share the same.

Pretty interesting stuff. I never realized my mothers name was so common in Switzerland, and it seems my paternal name is more popular in Ireland than I had imagined. Seems accurate though because I traced my mother's surname to Germany and my father's surname to Northern England.

I am only able to trace back my fathers name... Long

The Long line originates in Preux, Normandy. The Long name is taken after William the conquerer took England, early in his reign in England William took a census of England and it is called the "Domesday Tomb"

My first ancestor of the Long family was "William Le Longue" as noted in the Domesday, he was a noble from Pruex Normandy. My direct ancestors descended from the original inhabited the area of Wiltshire England.

My fathers grandmothers maiden name was osborne.
My fathers mothers maiden name was Eckles

My mother died when I was three and she and my uncle Ed were also adopted as a childlren by the Frank Keller family, all I know of her birth family is there names.
Johnathon Henry King and Twyla H Morris.

I have tried to look into the origination of King, but it is such a common name in so many areas of the world it is impossible to tell anything from that, her family was French Canadian from what people say but I do not put a lot of faith in what people say.

If any knows about the origination of any of the maiden names I would enjoy seeing your info. I have only been interested for the most part in direct lineage but the rest would be interesting to know as well.

My surname is not very common. In Germany it can be found almost exclusively in the Black Forest region. There is a larger number of persons in Canada (Alberta) and some in the USA (Florida and California). They must be all descendants of a few very distant relatives who emigrated in the late 18th and early 19th century.

All come back Norwegian however I have always been curious of my grandparents surname Knutzen and Jantzen and names similar to that. Rather then have the typical "sen" ending "son of Jan" it seems really interesting spelling for norway. Does anyone know of the "sen" patronymic compared to the "zen" patronymic ending??? thanks!

My constantly paternal great*12 grandfather was born in Essex, England in 1604. I'd rather not say the exact town because my ancestors' (and mine) name is all over the first page of Google if I search it.

He died in Rhode Island, United States (of course a colony at the time) in 1672. My constantly paternal great*14 grandfather was born in Essex, England in 1514. My surname goes back in time in Essex, England. There's also a German derivation of the same name but that is not the origin in this case. This worldwide name finder is right on target:

http://oi52.tinypic.com/x5cdjr.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/52/Essex_UK_locator_map_2010.svg/200px-Essex_UK_locator_map_2010.svg.png http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0a/Arms_of_Essex.svg/100px-Arms_of_Essex.svg.png

My name is a colonial name and multiplied much more in the North American continent than anywhere else. There is also a significant Australian population.

http://oi55.tinypic.com/5y691.jpg

Despite seeming to be everywhere here, I've only ever encountered one person with my surname ever with which I am not closely related.

These are my somewhat disappointing results... :(

Paternal grandfather (My surname):

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r543/mitDonnerundBlitSS/PGF.jpg

This is a very accurate result seeing as my ancestor bearing this surname came from Den Haag in Zuid-Holland (although he noted a Frisian origin in the Cape colony population register), but it totally ignores the South African context, and this is a quite common Afrikaner surname! :-O The prevalence of the surname outside the Netherlands and South Africa must be due to recent migrations of Afrikaners to English speaking and other predominantly Europid countries...

Paternal grandmother:

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r543/mitDonnerundBlitSS/PGM.jpg

A quite accurate result because my ancestor bearing this surname was from Aachen in Nordrhein-Westfalen (given the close proximity to Luxembourg and Vlaanderen). But the South African context is ignored yet again and, like previously, I suppose the occurrence of the surname in English speaking countries is due to recent migrations of Afrikaners.

Maternal grandfather:

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r543/mitDonnerundBlitSS/MGF.jpg

Not a very accurate result, seeing as my ancestor bearing this surname was from Rathlosen in Niedersachsen (no apparent connection to Kelheim in Bayern or Overijse in Vlaanderen), although the original German form has changed with the colonial Dutch influence in South Africa (but it is the altered form I used in the search). And to no surprise; the South African context is ignored and the occurrence of the surname in English speaking countries must be due to recent migrations of Afrikaners.

Maternal grandmother:

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r543/mitDonnerundBlitSS/MGM.jpg

A very accurate result, given the fact that my ancestors bearing this name were from Husum in Schleswig-Holstein (it is in close proximity to Flensburg and Kiel, no apparent Danish or Norwegian connection though). And guess what? The South African context is again totally ignored... :oanieyes

IMO I would say that I wouldn't trust this website to trace ones Germanic genealogy, one should rather opt for constructing a family tree from family knowledge and records, as well as researching population registers in your home country. This is especially true for colonial Germanics... :nod
