Cape Town - The government has offered bursaries to more than 10 000 white students since 2005, Education Minister Naledi Pandor revealed on Wednesday.

Responding to a Democratic Alliance parliamentary question requesting her to disclose the number of white students whose applications for bursaries had been turned down, Pandor said a substantial number of white students had been granted bursaries.

According to figures released by Pandor, the Department of Education had granted close to 3 000 bursaries to white students between 2005 and 2007.

Other government departments had funded more than 7 000 white students over the same period.

The bulk of the bursaries granted were part of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the Funza Lushaka bursary initiative, both of which cater for students who are academically-deserving but who do not have money to further their studies.

Pandor said there were no records of applications by white students that had been turned down.
