Now we are really talking. Who says its lost? Some say still operating. Wilhelm Landig in his novel (voller Wirklichkeiten) says Neuschwabenland was abandon circa 1959-1960 because in the pure air of Anatarctica, no germs were present and the people there lacked natural immunity so that with every new arrival, a near epidemic would occur if only the common cold. Also, circa 1960, it is said that the Reichsdeutschen there were party to a treaty, although unsigned by them, relinquishing the Antarctic Continent to non-nationalistic designes. Recently a writer at www.unglaublichenkeiten.org says that recent seismic activity there points to a continued Reichdeutschen presence (I can go into this in detail if anyone is interested). Unfortunately, most of the literature concerning Neuschwabenland is "auf deutsch" so discussion in the English speaking world is restricted.

Afterthought: Is anybody interested in Reichdeutsche Flugscheiben?

Is there truth to what one of the pages is saying? That there were 100 unaccounted for U-boats after the end of WW2. Interesting reads.

The basic idea behind Neuschwabenland is not radical. 1938-39 the German ship Swabenland sailed to Antarctica at the direction and funding of Hermann Goering (Air Force not Navy). A flying boat aboard the Schwabenland was sent to explore the hinterland. They found a rift valley with year-round ponds called the Schumacher Ponds. They were heated geothermally. Each pond had a different type of algea in its water and each pond was a different color. From this information, the Germans deduced that thermal vents could be found and perhaps a year-round habitation built.

Two references which might be available are: O. Bergmann, Deutsche Flugscheiben und U-Boote Ueberwachen Die Weltmeere (volumes 1 and 2) and two books in English by Col Howard A. Buechner and Capt. Wilhelm Bernhart titled Adolf Hiterl and the Secrets of the Holy Lance and Hitler's Ashes.

Bergmann describes the story of the founding of Newschwabenland but he also goes on to say that during the war years, a series of voyages were made to Neuschwabenland to construct a base there. He lists names of sailors who participated and two sailors who describe events. Bergmann also describes some fantasitc U-boat engines and evidence for German saucers.

Buechner and Bernhart are a strange pair. Buechner is a medical doctor and was the first American doctor to enter Buchenwald concentration camp. "Bernhart" is an alias. "Bernhart" was a junior officer aboard U-530. This U-boat surrendered in July, 1945 (the war ended May 8th, 1945) at Mar del Platta, Argentina. Bernhart says that U-530, U-997 and others carried on a kind of "trade-route" during the war between Germany, Neuschwabenland, and Mar del Platta. Hundreds of trips were involved. At the close of the war, blueprints, scientists, machine tools, money, etc. were transported from Germany and Spain to Neuschwabenland and Mar del Platta. The route became so routine there was a poem about it according to Bernhart:


Oh! Choosers of the Slain,
Said he, Maidens of Vallhalla,
Bury me beyond the Sea,
In a place called mar del Plata

Besides setting up secure areas in Antarctica, secure areas were also set up in the Canadian Arctic (Landig's Point 101), on the Argentine/Chilean border in the "Alps" called Colonia Dignidad (exact location upon request) and in Eastern Greenland at what the Germans called Biber Damm (Beaver Dam). Beaver Dam was said to have been accessed via U-boat through underwater tunnels. This is also said of the base at Neuschwabenland. In fact, this type of entrance was built and can still be seen at the German base on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). This base was built inside the island in a glass volcanic bubble. Over it was a villa owned by the German family whose last name was Winter. The Kriegsmarine wanted Fuerteventura as a U-boat base and the Luftwaffe wanted a missile test facility. Three tunnels connected the bubble to the sea for U-boats. This base was explored in modern times by Austrian and Spanish explorers. They found to old U-boats in the "bubble". Maps and logs on-board indicate they had been in use until the 1950s, transporting SS men to South America---with the knowledge of the US government! Remember Raiders From the Lost Ark and the episode of the U-boat base? Is it similar? This is where Spielberg got the idea. Beaver Dam remained a secret joint Nazi-NATO base until well after the war by some accounts. Neuschwabenland functioned with the aid of the South American base until about 1959-1960. Colonia Dignidad was visited by a Japanese film crew in the 1970s but may still function. I have references for most of this but they are certainly not on the internet.

This is mentioned in O. Bergmann's books but the basis is Bodo Herzog's Deutsche U-Boote 1906-1966 (which I own). It is true, there are many U-boats which remain unaccounted for. One problem is that the Germans renamed new U-boats with old designations to fool Allied Intelligence. Also, "sunk" U-boat were sometimes salvaged.
